Rune Library! Ideas

I have started a rather nice rune library setup and was curious on ideas. There are the standard books that are always found in a library.

Dungeons
T Maps
Town Locations


But... What are some UNIQUE or other NEEDED books in a rune library?
Any ideas would be appreciated. I don't want to spend all my time making a library that noone wants to visit. I am leaving a column for the SA expansion too.

Wouldn't that be kinda silly considering if you have a rune to 1 moongate they are all tied together?

You could but it only takes 1 book so no big difference. Sometimes I want to go to a specific area not the moongate itself.

i'm slowly building my rune library ... well it's been a years long task but ...

what i am doing ... not because they are needed, but i like to be thorough ... is breaking down every npc shop there is ...

so books of:

tailors
smiths
carpenters
cobblers
healers
inns
shipwrights
mage shops
tinkers
fletchers
etc etc

also moongates, shrines, dungeon entrances, and deeper into tram dungeons, hunting spots, undead spawns/cemeteries, quest runes, collection points, blessed area's of baja (or whatever shard you are on) training spots (ie taming, melee, bardic etc) vendors

i prob dont need all these .. but i figure if yer gonna do a rune 'library' it might as well have everything!

I was a little on the um...obsessive side when I did my rune library...

I went through each town and marked all the shops/famous spots as well as doing individual books for tailors, provisioners, mage shops etc. You'd be amazed how much more often I use the town runes over the runes for the individual shops. I also included locations in Tokono and Malas. There is a book for different isles, romantic locations, rooftops, cemeteries, etc. I also have dungeon books by level and by monster type.

It took a long time to put together but the nice thing is now I can always get exactly where I need to go

Atm im building runebooks for locations thats important for my homeshard Europa. Rune for some Shops thats been around forr ages(trammel birth), Player Towns, RP locations, Imporessive houses etc.

i hope you get some ideas.

Btw since im allready posting. When i did the imp/map locations for the hag quest, it too me a LONG time. I did the quest over and over and over and over again. I did this since i couldnt find the runes for it anyway on my home shard and it took me weeks.
When i was done with the books i ´proudly ran home to my library and reorganised it to fit and forgot to lock it down

In frustration i made a post on my shardforum and then i realized that quite many ppl allready had the books and i could just copy their books instead of starting all over again.
The imp locations my friend is one book that you want to copy! Dont be as stupid as me and do all the hard work by your self

My wish is that rune libraries were easier to navigate. On Atlantic, Goodman's rune library is legendary, but it is very hard to find things unless you know where to look.

Maybe runebook shelves with plaques.

It would be nice if we had sign posts for each section. I try to place something near them like sand, leather, regs or such to guide people. I also put a quest item on top of the quests that I can do it for to make it easier.

you may want to check out Goodman's or Winterbreeze Library on Atlantic,

As mentioned before Goodmans is the most popular one , and quite good to navigate once you let it all load.

Goodmans is right in Zento and winterbreeze Library in Yew. make sure you check all 3 buildings there (all 3 are Libraries)

I would love plaques! The artwork is in there (select house/NPC shop signs), they could be carpenter crafted as blank, then a wooden engraving tool could label them. This would be a really useful item for museum/rune library owners.

I too would dearly love plaques. I have tried many ways to make it easier for people to find what they are looking for but none have really done the job like nice plaques would.

I tried to color code the facets but with the upcoming SA the colors are dulled to the point that I will have to change the colors. This I am not excited about. People hate it when you move or change anything.

I am also at a crossroads with regard to space. I have always been a believer that the library should be contained to 2 floors maximum for patron's convenience.

All was well with that plan until they announced an expansion. I don't have any idea how many new books the expansion will create but I will either have to expand up one more floor or to another house across the street if there is a lot of new spots.

Question is what would my patrons like better? And who do we ask/pester/badger/harass to get plaques?

Not sure who the best person to ask is, I know Sakkarah is very visible on the gardening board and does some things that involve deco items like with the new puzzle chests, and Chrissay is the community person and mainly posts on U Hall. I was going to wait until after SA launched and post-launch bugs get ironed out before I submit my current list of demands in a pleasing and easy to read format.

Just thought I'd poke my head in and give you a quick peek at my efforts

Took about 6 months on and off!
I did buy quite a few books from an older library, but had to redo a lot of them following the KR map rebuild.

Top floor still needs work

The shelving structure round the fireplace is a blatant rip off of a design I saw on here a while back, but I can't remember whose it was sorry!

Have added a couple of extra books since, mainly just spawn spots for the newish seeds (hedges and so forth) grouped by seed type.

Not started on a Ter-Mur book yet, but should be fun!!

Ya know as much as I personally dislike rune library's, I always feel that if I don't already have a rune or am not willing to walk its not worth it. I really kinda have always thought making one would be fun. Organizing everything to my own OCD specifications and what not. Any way I guess I'll just throw this out here...

If any one on Atlantic would like one done and has a 18x18ish or side by side something else... and I do mean side by side *Has some interesting innovative plans for something* I would be open to doing it.

From 2000 to 2004 I ran one of the largest, most comprehensive rune libraries on the Catskills shard. Here's what I had in my library (What I could remember anyway) I used a color coding system on the books to show at a glance where each one was marked for. Most sets had books for Tram, Fel and Malas with few exceptions.

High Level Monsters (Fame/Loot) - 2 books separated by casting and noncasting mobs
T-Map locations
mining locations (before resource randomization)
Unique locations
Shrines
Moongates
quests
solen hives
vendor malls
unique homes (after the introduction of custom housing)

The bulk of the library was the shop books I had made. On each facet I went to each town and marked a rune for every different type of shop. So for example, I had one book full of nothing but blacksmith shops in tram, another for blacksmith's in fel. It was a little experiment I tried, just to see if people would use them. As it turned out more people were using them to go directly to the shop they needed as opposed to recalling to the bank and running around town to find the right shop. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed it for a while. The only reason I didn't re-open when I returned to UO a few years ago was because 90% of the runes I had were out of date (landscaping changes blocked most of them), plus all the new lands added so much more content, and locations to mark, I just didn't have the drive to do it all again basically from scratch.

Running a rune library is great for the OCD players out there. I know it kept mine in check for the most part. It wasn't until I quit UO that it started to show in my real life.

It's funny how rearranging a few books becomes an entire reorganization of every book in the library

I went with adding another floor and I've really opened up alot of space. I notice in SA that the stacks load just like you are waiting for customization mode to come back and the colors are terribly hard to distinguish between meaning I will have to rethink the color code system. I relied heavily on color coding and that doesn't seem to be a good option anymore.

I have switched from egg bombs to benches in hopes that dying the bench stacks may help me in the future. I know many people will be happy that I have gone back to benches but many will be angry because I have moved everything but I have no options left. I was down to three lockdowns and had no room for any SA expansion books. I tried hard to fit everything on two floors for everyone's convenience but I can no longer do that.

Ferrut, your rune library looks very nice. I love being in Zento. I've had to remove just about all my deco for more lockdowns. I really wish I could convert some of my storage to lockdowns. I've bought the lockdown expansion already and used it up fast hehe. The only floor I refuse to decimate is the Memorial Roof. That I will keep as is.

I'm staring at the first floor wondering where to start *cringes* I hope not to drive all my patrons away. Frank had a knack for this that I do not.
