RoT/Skill Gain Question

Since you only can gain once every so often after a certain point, do those gains come easier?

I guess what I'm trying to find out is, does it take fewer resources to hit GM smithing/tailoring on this shard or the same as a prodo shard?

make the right item and the gain is guarenteed (just wait out the timer).....way fewer resources than a prodo shard needed here....

once you hit RoT, you are pretty much guaranteed a gain when you use the skill at the appropriate difficulty level. So, for example, you will not gain swordsmanship at 103 when you swing at a mongbat, but you 99% will when you swing against a bigger monster.

so in the case of crafting you are correct, it takes fewer attempts to gain skills. Once you hit RoT, you only need to craft ~300 items to get to 100 skill (.1 gain per item)

EDIT: oops, postkr beat me

I plan on just mining for now to get enough ingots to GM smithing. I started with 50. Anyone have a ballpark figure for the amount needed to GM?

Do you plan on smelting your items to minimize the amount of ingots used or doing the heartwood quests to obtain some of the recipes for crafting? If you are smelting back ingots then you shouldnt need more than 10-15k iron ingots to get to 120 smithing here, if you started at 50. If you start at zero then you might add 2-3k more. Keep in mind that unless you obtain a smithing alacrity scroll it will take you 2 weeks to get to GM and just over 3 weeks to get to 120. Thats if you maximize every gain everyday.

Good to know.

I have another question now. I am trying to understand this RoT thing. And I get it for the most part. Here is a scenario:

Lets say I have.. Fencing at 70.3, Tactics at 70.1, and Hiding at 30.

How does the RoT cap work here? Can I get my gain in fencing, then get my gain in tactics, and do that every 5 minutes to get my 3.6 skill points for the day all in one day? After I get my 3.6 skill points for both of those skills, can I then go and work hiding up to 70.1, and then the next day gain 3.6 in each skill?

So for your example, what how much skill you gain in hiding is not relevant because it is not yet in rot. You can gain hiding all the way to 70.0 regardless of what you do with fencing and tactics.

Now with fencing at 70.3 and tactics at 70.1, go out, hit a lizardman for example, you gain 0.1 fencing and 0.1 tactics. Wait 5 minutes, do it again, you've gained another 0.1 fencing and 0.1 tactics so you should now be at 70.5 fencing and 70.3 tactics. You can do this all the way until you gain 3.6 skill total in both skills, so 1.8 in each skill, which means when you get to 72.1 fencing and 71.9 tactics, you will have finished your ROT gain for the day.

Consider the 3.6 points your "pool" of skill gain. Each skill that is in ROT (ie. that is over 70 real skill) will pull .1 skill from that pool when you gain in that skill. So you could gain 3.6 in one skill, 1.8 each in two skills, or any combination of skills that equalled 3.6 on any day. Skills under 70 have no effect on your ROT pool, so you can raise them all the way to 70 with out any penalty or daily cap. Once you get above 80 real skill on a particular skill your pool for that group of skills is dropped to 2.1. You can still gain 3.6 points on skills under 80 if you dont use any of your 2.1 pool. If you gain on skills both abvoe and below 80 then the amount of your daily capo varies, there is some math involved there. Its best to just work all skills up in the same pool if possible.

Now alacrity scrolls add a whole new strategy to gaining skills, however they no longer spawn and are becoming more and more expensive.

So the best way to do it is to get everything to 80, then move to the next tier?

If you get fencing to 85 and tactics to 75, you can gain 2.1 in fencing or 3.6 in tactics (or a proportional share of each), so having fencing in 85 does not lower the amount of skill you can gain in skills in the 70s.

I've always thought the best thing to do is based on your available time. There are certain skills that are more important than others, for example it is much more important to get fencing to 100+ to be able to compete than it is tactics. So I would say focus in on raising fencing, however do so based on your available time to train.

To train 1 skill for its maximum 3.6 gain for the day would take you 3 hours.
To train 7 skills to its maximum 3.6 gain for the day would take you 30 minutes.

If you only have 30 minutes to spend each day, train all 7 skills. If you have 3 hours, by all means train only the most important skill. If it is some amount of time in between, the focus on the few skills that are the most important.

Make sure you read my post in the fencing alacrity thread as to how the alacrity scroll work here.

Ya I read that, very nifty way to get past the timer.

As you said, they aren't available anymore and I doubt I'll have the funds to purchase one. At least not for quite some time.
