Why is it so important to kill these herds of blind vegan tigers?

They've obviously eaten all the prey in their environment so if you don't reduce the population, they'll all die a horrible death from starvation!

Once upon a time, lesser animals spawned in among them to vaguely simulate prey, but that frustrated newbies, who were essentially ambushed by the tigers.
