Returning Tamer - Advice please

Been away for about 8yrs and things have changed ALOT. Back in the day I use to hunt with my nightmare and white wyrm farming blood elementals or dragons in Destard. Now there is so much more content that I have no idea where to hunt or increasing taming. Not to mention if my template is still viable and help on gear. I have been trolling the forums gathering ideas but I thought a general plea for help might help narrow info down. All my gear is dated but I have sufficient funds in the bank to purchase items. Thanks in advance!

I think that is still a pretty good templet the only thing is at 109 taming you wont be able to tame a greater dragon. I mean technicaly you can but at 109 my self I've nerver been able to do it. It seems that 120 taming is the magic number to tame one solo. As far as gear try to get as close to all 70's in your suit as you can and with magery on your temp try to make it medable with mana regernation on it. Hope that helps. What shard do you play on I'm on sonoma and play my tamer alot we could maybe hook up and go put a hurt on something.:gee:

And donate that WW to the Zoo

Seriously though, they aren't much use these days, not when a Greater Dragon can eat they in a couple bites lol. And depending on what kind of Tamer you like to play as; a Luck suit is something to consider. I would say dump Resisting Spells and take the rest to 120.

You can also use jewelry to bump up your taming skills to tame and control the higher end pets. You may also want to get a talisman, the Birds of Britannia Library talisman, which gives you +5 taming and +5 lore when you carry it on your paperdoll. (You'll need to be power-scrolled high enough to bump those skills).

If you get all 3 taming skills (vet, lore, taming) to 120, you'll have the max possible stable slots available to you. This can be done with natural skill or with jewelry (though you'll have to be wearing the jewels when you claim and stable your pets to get the slots).

If you're a human and would like to control a cu sidhe, you'll need the Pads of the Cu Sidhe artifact. (They're like boots). If you're an elf, you can by nature tame and ride/control cu's.

Otherwise, like others said... try to put together as close to an all 70's suit as possible. I'd also drop the resist and 120 the others. My thought process is, if you're fighting with a pet, in most cases, your pet will be taking the damage. You're just there for offensive support and healing. You generally don't want monsters bashing directly on you - you want them bashing on your pet. So no need to spend skill points on defenses.

For pet control purposes, you really only need 110 taming and 110 lore. Or 115/105 is another good combo, to give 99% control on greater dragon. You'll have to go a bit higher for fire steeds and dread warhorses.

Check here for taming and control chance:

http://uo.stratics.com/content/skills/anim.php

For taming chance, set it to success 0 pretames, sort by taming.
For control chance, set it to control chance and sort however u want.

What I like to do is swap in a super high taming item to raise me to 120/110 to tame, but after that I swap back to regular items. When you go to stable creatures you can swap in your items also to get those extra stable slots.

If you wanna train it all the way and keep it there without the item swapping thats fine too, but its really easy to make a 1-key item swap macro in the enhanced client. I don't know about the Classic client tho.

A lot of higher end stuff you kill with your pet won't let you get near to Vet it due to AOEs, so vet beyond 80 is of HIGHLY questionable Value, which is a serious design flaw of the skill. I have it at 100 but I could easily drop it to 80 for resses and swap in an item only for res, and put the 20 pts elsewhere. In fact, I think I will do just that, because 20 extra skill pts could be put into meditation.

Anyway, higher magery seems to be the best bet for ranged pet heals in situations where you can't vet (high end bosses with AOEs, succubus, etc). Chivalry cleanse wounds is another option. I don't like Spellweaving because the heal over time is on a timer and you can only cast it once every so often.

Welcome back :)
Your'e teamplate is fine, u might wanna tweak it a little.
110 taming, 110 lore. is what most go for, since it gives you 99% control chance of most pets around.

I assume you wanna get pets to hunt with
Pets you should have a look at

Bake kitsune (2 slot pet, does make a good partner for youre nightmare)
http://uo.stratics.com/database/view.php?db_content=hunters&id=1435

Rune beetle (3 slot pet, does make a better partner for youre nightmare)
http://uo.stratics.com/database/view.php?db_content=hunters&id=1449

The Cu Sidhe (4 slot pet, u need to be elf to tame them. humans/gargs can use them if they wear special footwear, just not tame them)
http://uo.stratics.com/database/view.php?db_content=hunters&id=2440

The Greater Dragon ( 5 slot pet, one of the best pets around)
http://uo.stratics.com/database/view.php?db_content=hunters&id=2585

Not all of the above is easy to tame, but ask around luna bank, and im sure one of the local tamers, wanna give u a hand.

Thanks for all the advice and especially all the links. Streamlined a lot of information for me. As for the template, I think I will lower the resist once I get the 120 scrolls.

And holy changes....The economy is so inflated, my god. I had a couple mil in the bank but that seems like chump change now. Is there a good hunting place to dive into? You would laugh at my gear. Hell, it probably belongs in a museum.

There may be better spots, but for me it would be the WW in ice dungeon, nice loot and respawn fast but not too much.

With a Cu or a GD it's a piece of cake :)

Or you can go to the Fan Dancer Dojo to the last level to hunt succubus.
It's more dangerous and the loot isn't that better. But the WW spot may be crowded so it's a good second choice.

Also Ciran, you want to know about honor taming, if you have not learnt already:

http://uo.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=30532

You increase your honor virtue by honoring a monster before your pet kills it.
You can set up a macro to activate your honor virtue.

When you activate your honor and honor yourself, monsters will not attack you for a period of time. This holds true even if you anger the monster via failed taming attempts. This can be a great help when you try to tame creatures like Greater Dragons.

I agree, honor taming is the easiest way to tame a GD.

You could first tame a Cu (or have someone do it for you if you're not elf), train it up to 80 ish in all skills and then go hunt succubus in the Fan dancer dojo, they are great to gain Honor and have nice loot too. You can also gain sacrifice and be back to glorious lord/lady very fast.

And then, when your Honor will be high enough go get some nice GD :)

Some things to remember when hunting succubus :

You can recall from the fan dancer dojo but not into it. You have to run from outside to the third level.

there is a ronin in the room with the succubus. the easiest way is to lure it far away before beginning to farm the succubi. If possible, kill the first one and lure the one that will respawn. This one will be gone 2 hours.

The succucus has an area damage and will aggro you as soon as it hits you. So don't stand near your pet, stay far enough and as soon as the sucuubus is dead run to your pet to vet.
If your pet is in danger to die, just call it to you, invis and mount it.
Run fast to a safe area, invis to be sure, dismount and heal.
Or if you think your pet would die before being able to go to you just recall to a safe place.

The succubus respawns almost instantaneously so it's safer to wait for your pet to be killing the next one before begining to loot the body of the one that was just killed.

If you die, there is a healer just outside the dojo near the entrance. But be very careful the place is dangerous, a lot of fan dancers and ronins are near.

Goos hunt !

Cu's are great for doing succubus at the dojo, you just can't vet them during the fight because of the suc's area affect spell. My tamer has disco so that makes it a much faster fight as well. What's really nice for farming now is that gold weighs much less so you can save yourself a bunch of bag of sending charges.

Keep in mind that with inflation everything may cost more, but that also means that you can sell things for more. So good ways to make money are by farming things that people need - if you have the SA expansion then farming for imbuing ingredients is a great way to go, you'll get gold, ingredients, a chance at arty drops, and it'll help get you back into the swing of things.

If you like crafting at all then look into making an imbuer (if you have SA), at the very least you can unravel your loot to get imbuing ingredients. And you can make your own armor pieces which would help out with the suit building. It's actually kind of fun trying to do it.

BTW people do tame and sell greaters, so ask around. You might get someone's old dragon for free, since it's a big thing to try to get pet upgrades but there's not usually anything that can be done with the old pet except patting it on the head and setting it free. If you were on Baja I'd give you a spare pet, since I have a few. :)

Yeah, prices are so inflated now that I am going to have to farm and use the selling technique you were speaking of. I picked up a Bake and Rune Beetle last night and things are dying much faster now that I ditched my old school pets. Still trying to get into the swing of things. That damn Rune Beetle killed me 4x while attempting it.. eh at least I got it. I was reading a sticky post in regards to increasing your taming but the posts were very dated. At 109 taming any spots you might recommend?

Honestly at 109 gains are going to be so slow as to be ridiculous. If you're determined to train though you might want to mix things up, as in tame unicorns then donate them to the zoo, and this way you aren't just getting gains but are also getting points to redeem for items later. Alternately you could tame then release and kill with a pet - so you'd get the gold that way, leather possibly, and your pet would get some training in. I think kirins are also good at your level, there's one that spawns in the kirin passage near a poison elemental. So you can go back and forth between them to train whatever pet you have with you (must be a three slot pet or lower you are trying to train, tho 2 slots is better if you want to stay mounted on an ethy or whatever).

Me, at 109 I'd probably just tame every day for my .1 GGS and eat a 120 PS when I got one, then use jewelry to get to 120 to tame anything I want to keep. Just keep getting your GGS every day and it will save you hours and hours of playtime, though its definitely the slowest way to 120.

Keep in mind that there is a library talisman that gives +5 taming, +5 lore. So that is potentially 5 points you won't ever have to train if you wear the tally.

BTW make a macro to honor monsters so you can build up your honor as you are killing stuff. It's just a regular old UO macro, I think it's "invoke virtue" and then the drop down is "honor" or something like that.

To know what's the best pet to tame at your level to max your taming gain you could use this website :

http://www.tamingarchive.com/main/whattotame.php

I did it with 109 and it seems that the best would be to tame Drakes, Hell hounds, leader hell hounds and bake kitsunes.

But if you manage to get a Cu, farming Succubus you should be able to get some + taming rings or braces.
I'm 102.2 real taming and 120 with a ring + brace.
I plan to go to 120 for real but in the meantime I can tame and control the most powerful pets much more easily :)

Stratics has a good page as well:

http://uo.stratics.com/content/skills/anim.php

I select "Sorted by: taming" then put in my taming then select "success 0 pretames" and hit "Go". This sorts the animals and monsters by how difficult they are to tame so you can scroll down to where the success rates are 40-60% (well thats the range I aim for). At 109 ridgebacks are right at 52% so thats what a lot of people end up doing. Kirin and Unicorn are 28%, which is a bit low since you'll not gain on fails it's some wasted time, but I heard some good reports from doing tougher tames at higher levels as far as getting gains. Maybe mix it up a bit so you don't get too bored in one area.

Off Topic: What you might not realise about your gear is that it can be very valuable. When i opened an old friends account he had gear and items worth mutiple millions.
It may not seem to be worth jack **** in the first glimpse but a trained eye might find them valuable.

For example: Ordinary clothing and armor marked with "sewen by" is indeed worth a bunch to collectors. So dont toss your items away before someone has had a chanse to take a look at it.

On Topic: Your template is fine. Just drop resists and raise the other skills when you get the scrolls.
Another popular option is to drop meditation and eval and raise Musich and either discordance or peace making.

If you're at 109 trained taming, you can consider yourself done. Get a +11 taming ring and the powerscroll.

Some argue not to use jewelry because when ressed you won't have control of the pet. But 109 is enough to control GDs depending on lore. And you can make a 1-click equip macro in the enhanced client and with UO Assist, which is an approved 3rd party program. I've been doing this for months with no issues.

So really, this is about how much pain you want to put yourself through.

Wow that succubis area is good for farming equipment. Great tip on luring that ronin away from the spawn area. I really don't know what is good vs what is not. I put together a no regents gear and banked all the "sew by" gear that I had on. Everything is so new I'm like a kid at a candy store running around trying to tame everything. For now I will try to build it taming .1 a day if need be just need to find that 120 power scroll. Any good places to try and harvest it?

you will have to get in friendly with the pvp/spawning guilds on your server and go spawn with them.

or, you can collect (buy) lower level scrolls - 110's, 115's, and put them in a binder to create the 120.

you can farm gold and buy the 120 taming outright, but it's one of the most expensive scrolls, right up there with magery, eval, and resist. check searchuo.com for prices on your server to get an idea what these cost.

lastly if someone takes the succubus on the 2nd floor of the dojo, there is a succubus on the 3rd floor right when you go down the stairs. just lure the daemon away out of the room, invis, and come back

Ciran, my main character is a tamer on Catskills as well, and I run an inn for new and returning players. If you need any more help or someone to bounce ideas off, my ICQ is 11893766. Just one word of advice I hope isn't too late for you. Don't throw or give away, trade or sell anything in your account without getting someone knowledgeable that you trust to look at it first. Find an imbuer

Imbuing can cheaply make a ring or bracelet with 90% intensity in 4 different properties. That means 13% level in each of 4 skills. Ask at the bank for +13 taming, vet, lore, magery (or even some plain old resists) and suddenly you are waaaay over your skill caps.

What imbuing finds hard is making something at 100% intensity like fast-cast 1, or mana regen 2, or night sight, or FCR 3. But FCR 2 would be easy.

--------------

Look into the HONOR virute. In spite of what they say in the guide, a tamer gains it fast by standing on the spot from where he does the "use honor virtue" and says "all kill." Get up to seeker of honor and 115 taming and you have a good chance of taming your own greater dragon.

Here's a question: when you equip +skills jewelry, will the skills bonuses only go up to your skill cap for that skill? For example, if you are at 115 taming and 115 lore and have not eaten a 120 power scroll for either skill, then you equip the Birds of Britannia talisman, will your skills still be 115/115 or 120/120?

Thanks!

The skill points given by jewelery or other items can allow you to go up to your general skill cap (700 to 720 depending of the age of your account) but not up to a specific skill cap.

If you ate a 115 scroll in Taming and lore you can go up to 115 skill points in those skills and no more.
But if you have already 700 points and your cap is 700 you can add extra skill points in any skill wearing items that give you bonuses in any skill.

In your example, if you haven't eaten a powerscroll taking you to 120, the talisman won't take you above 115 skill. Powerscrolls unlock a skill so you can raise it to that skill level, whether through training or skill items. So basically you need a couple of 120 scrolls.

You probably know this already, but if you get your skills gump up and set it to show adjusted skill, you'll see the skill you have including the items you're wearing. So in your case it'll show 115/115 if you've eaten 115 scrolls in both skills.

If you're not sure what your skill cap is for a particular skill, checking the box to show your skill cap will show you. Just as the real skill button obviously lets you see what your trained skill is at too.

The overall skill cap of between 700-720 controls how many points of trained skill you can have, but you can exceed these caps by adding skill items to your suit.
