I am guessing my old template is still pretty viable as its for pvm but was thinking of changing it up a lil updating using items.

Current
230 stat points 720 Skills
Peace 110
Taming 110
Lore, Magery, Hiding, Music 100
Vet 95 (planed to 100)

New Plan
107/120 Music
107/120 Peace
107/120 Discord
107/120 Taming
107/120 Lore
74/100 Vet
87/100 Magery

Then going by the imbue guide I should be able to get/find/make
item one +13s
peacemaking
disco
music
vet
item two +13s
vet
magery
lore
taming

Doing this I would actually have some points left over. Is this a viable tactic? And are there any 'magic numbers' I need to hit? Is attempting to tame based on real skill for instance.

Nothing in taming is based on unmodified skill, so there is no downside to using skill plus items.

*grins* Welcome back!

Firstly, you don't need to have 120 in any taming skills for hunting with your pets. It's handy to tame things faster with high skill, but I use most of my tamers with a real skill of 110/110 in taming and lore and no skill items if I'm not taming. That will give you 99% control of most commonly used pets. Pets like the dread warhorse and bane dragon will need 115/110 or 112/112 skill levels, but unless you plan on hunting with these a lot, stick at 110/110.

I suggest using skill boosting on the less important skills that support your template, then you have more flexibility and choice in your equipment, rather than always having to wear the same pieces. My usual target is magery on my bards, especially in the EC where I can swap out a spellbook or some jewels with a single macro hit. I also use the songwoven mantle arms to boost music by 10. They're prolly not as flashy as some of the imbued gear these days, but that's what I use ;)

With barding skills, if you're having two on the template at once, I'd try for a single targeted option like peace/disco and couple it with provo to control groups. I don't find any need for peace on the bards I have with disco in their templates, disco pulls stuff down enough for my pets and provo is handy in thick spawns. The great thing is that soulstones don't have a delay between uses now, so you can switch your bard skills around whenever you like. So if you did want to add in provo, keep the peace on a soulstone then it's there if you want to slot it in.

Peace is still useful for taming though right? I have a char with high provo, I may just toss it on a stone for my tamer. ^^ Or just let him keep it and swap it when I need it, since there is no limit. Cool beans.

Yeah, it's still handy for taming with, so I wouldn't flush it or anything ;)

Personally I wouldn't keep Peace just for taming as that can be done far easier now, primarily with Honor.

You could stone Peace for Provo which makes the template extremely effective, or even add Spellweaving which has a host of Tamer friendly uses :)

Skill based items also give a lot of options to add other skills also, a bit of Mysticism or Chivalry can be very handy.

I'm not a fan of the skill at all, but peace is actually better than honor if you've got it trained and stoned. After all, it does have uses beyond taming pets and it doesn't need the maintenance that honor does. Takes a lot less time to swap skills from a soulstone than it does to work up a pip or two of honor. If you had 0 peace then honor's the better option because you wouldn't have to train the skill, but if you have it trained to begin with I think you may as well use it till you adapt to the template change ;) If you did a lot of taming with honor you'd need to work your pips back up at some point. Peace doesn't have that. I still wouldn't use it myself, but I understand why some tamers keep it.

Of course I'd say it was ideal if you mastered taming without either peace or honor, then you can just go tame straight off and do what you want in the template otherwise.

As far as I am concerned honour is only useful in emergencies. Now what constitutes an "emergency" is subjective, but I would consider finding a truly exception greater dragon in Fel in Destard a good time to use honour. You obviously don't want to be spending half an hour trying to tame a greater dragon in Fel Destard.
