Some how lost game connection, logged instantly back in. I had two packies with items on them when I lost connection, gone when I logged back in. My followers were still showing 3/5 so I knew they had to be somewhere. GM Noctua found them for me.

Wow! I heard GMs were like Bigfoot (aka Ogopogo, Sasquatch, etc) ... believed to exist and seldom seen - if ever.

A way to fix this particular issue is to log out in a city inn (houses don't count) then close the client...relaunch the client and log back in. Your followers should reappear, if they don't they poofed and are gone. A GM had a friend do that and her Cu returned to her.
