Guidelines:

1. Fame gain from BODs is CONSTANT - not diminishing returns as is the fame from creatures. So, if you are at 0 Fame, you get the same amount of Fame for turning in the BOD as you would if you had 15,000 fame.

2. Formula for Fame from a specific BOD:

A. Get the POINT VALUE of the BOD, from the EA Knowledge Base for Smith BODs or EA Knowledge Base for Tailor BODs; or look for similar calculators (such as the one on Stratics) that use these point value systems, to do the math for you.

Take the listed point value for the BOD, and DIVIDE BY 50 (dropping any fractions, which result from 10-count & 15-count BODs), to get your base number for the fame calculation.

B. Take the Base Number gained from A, and square it (i.e. multiply it by itself). This is the amount of fame the BOD gives.

Examples (all tested):
a. A Normal Iron 15-count small gives NO FAME (0 squared)
b. An Exceptional Iron 20-count small gives 25 fame; The Base number is 5 (250/50), which is squared to 25.
c. An Exceptional Gold 15-count small gives 144 fame (400 for being gold, +200 for being exceptional, equals 600; 600/50=12; 12^2=144)
d. An Exceptional Valorite 20-count small gives (550 for Valorite + 50 for 20-count +200 for exceptional = 800; 800/50=16) 16^2 or 256 Fame!

e. A Normal Iron 15-count Platemail large gives 64 fame.
f. An Exceptional 10-count Dull Copper Chainmail gives 196 fame.

g. Most Tailor smalls give 0, 1, 4, 9 or 16 fame. Even the best Tailor LBOD, due to the differences in the system, only gives 256 fame (20 EX Barbed 6-part LBOD).

Alternate calculation system for Smith BODs

This allows you to get the base number, before squaring, without consulting a calculation table to find a number to divide.

Calculate the base number, as follows
  • If the BOD is Iron, the base value is 0
  • For other metals, the base is determined by the rarity of the metal. Dull Copper starts at a base of 4, then add 1 for each step up the metal rarity, until you reach Valorite at 11.
  • For quantity of items, 10 & 15 count BODs have a modifier of 0.
  • 20-count BODs have a Modifier of +1.
  • If the Bod is EXCEPTIONAL, add a +4 Modifier.
  • LBODs have the following bonuses
  • If a Ringmail or Polearm (Bardiche/Halberd) LBOD, add +4
  • If a Chainmail or 6-part weapon (macing, axes, swords) LBOD, add +6
  • If a Fencing (5-part) weapon LBOD, add +7
  • If a Platemail LBOD, add +8.
These are effectively the numbers for the Smith calculation system, with the division by 50 already done (so all you have to do is add the numbers, then multiply the result by itself).

Tailor BODs:

Tailor BOD Fame is calculated similarly to Smith BODs, with the following changes:
EXCEPTIONAL is only 100 points in the reward calculation, not 200.
Spined Leather is 50 Points, Horned 100 points, and Barbed 150 points.
Large BODs are worth more, and are more streamlined, as leather and cloth LBODs go by their part count, regardless if all cloth, all leather, or several cloth smalls with a leather footwear BOD.
4-parters are 300 points, 5-parters are worth 400 points, and 6-parters are worth 500 points.

Alternate calculation system for Tailor BODs

This allows you to get the base number, before squaring, without consulting a calculation table to find a number to divide.

So, a 20-count normal Horned small is 50+100 = 150 points, or 9 Fame (3^2), while the corresponding Exceptional BOD would be 250 points, or 25 Fame (5^2).

Calculate the base number, as follows
  • If the BOD is Cloth or Leather, the base value is 0
  • For other Leathers, Add 1 for Spined, 2 for Horned, or 3 for Barbed.
  • For quantity of items, 10 & 15 count BODs have a modifier of 0.
  • 20-count BODs have a Modifier of +1.
  • If the Bod is EXCEPTIONAL, add a +2 Modifier (not the +4 of the Smith system).
  • LBODs have the following bonuses
  • If a 4-part LBOD (most clothing sets, and footwear sets), add +6
  • If a 5-part LBOD (Studded, Bone, and the Cloth "Town Cryer" set), add +8
  • If a 6-part LBOD (male leather suit, Female leather collection LBODs), add +10
These are effectively the numbers for the Tailor calculation system, with the division by 50 already done (so all you have to do is add the numbers, then multiply the result by itself), and the material/BOD type X/Y table broken down into its components like the Smith system is by default.

I have noticed recently that there is a fame sink for smiths. I have not done much testing, but my working theory is that it costs some fame to put your mark on an item.

could it be that fame decays naturally over time, and it just coincided with this?

I've never noticed any fame loss from marking items, and I mark everything.
