[Report] A Drink with Avery as he Departs (Tuesday 21st)

This evening Avery was passing about drinks to the locals in the Britain Tavern near the Bank. (Thanks to Aurelius for letting me know! )

He was talking about his travels on sea and suggested to us to always follow the virtues and our leaders.

Avery left the Inn around 8:50. Very best wishes to him and his travels on the high seas.​

Trevelyan mentioned yesterday (Monday) that he'd been seen at the same location, the Cat's Den, but when I arrived that day he had long since gone. Today, Trev messaged me again about 8:10 that he had returned, and when I arrived, Avery was just announcing his retirement. From what I could record, the conversation went like this afterwards:

Aron Swordmaster: This is sad news!
Valkyrie: And where will you go!
Avery: I am not sure.
Avery: Tis nay sad news.
Avery: The lands are in good hands.
Avery: The Queen is doing better.
Aron Swordmaster: True, but we can always use stout arms as well as good hands...

Avery: *sips his ale quietly*
Avery: I wandered the towns last night
Avery: Not many folk about
Aron Swordmaster: Now good sir, what does this retirement mean for the realm? What messages would you have us pass to the populace?
Avery: Tell the people to follow their leaders.
Avery: But not with blind faith.

Avery then implored us to follow the virtues instead. He discussed a little more of his plans, which involves going to sea, but although I thought I had screen-shotted the rest of his speech, it appears I haven't, so the rest is from memory;

More people arrived, and received ale. The Black Cobra offered him a cuddly mongbat to take with him, and keep him snug at night, but Avery insisted he would travel light. He then proceeded to get more and more drunk, until he thought juggling walruses would be a good idea. In the meantime, a real mongbat came in, and proceeded to be very frustrated as he couldn't get his bottle of ale open with his tiny simian fingers. More well wishes, and Avery answered that he would be leaving "Soon. Very Soon". I asked out of character if we there was anything he wanted Stratics to know, but he didn't really answer. Back to the role-playing, more people arrived, and Trev turned himself into a Goblin. Avery then moved to a window, and declared that time was passing on... someone offered to escort him onwards, but he declined. He stepped to the door and then, with tears in his eyes as everyone saluted him, declared "I have one last stop before I leave." He didn't indicate what this was, and he quickly ran off to the east, before vanishing.

This part of the story looks to be working the same on all the shards - and it isn't really an 'event', it's part of Avery's storyline. Since that's primarily a RP concept, there's no reason why it should be announced as an 'event', just like real life if you happen to meet him, you might drink with him....

Had it not been for someone else seeing him in the inn, and telling me, I'd never have known - and can't say that I'd have been hugely bothered, since that's the way life works, if you miss something then you miss it.

I stumbled into the Atlantic version of this as well earlier this evening, and if people met him, and acted basically in-character and politely and not like a total pain in the backside, he drank with them. The people who simply turned up asking for stuff got ignored - or in one case, when it was a 'young' character (who might have had a 'Young' tag but no way in hell was a genuinely new player!), got handed a normal pitcher of milk because they were clearly too young to be drinking...

And I'll have a small bet we meet Avery again once the ships and the floating market are live, and I have a suspicion he may be one of the more important folks at that market, maybe handing out the 'missions' and mini-quests - but that's a pure guess on my behalf!

For once i have to agree with THP ,

i did check the europa event boards if anything was going on that teusday , normaly i try to turn up on all events , rp based or monsterbashing or with a gift, doesnt matter.

there was no info at all about the meeting with avery , it can be a new story plot and it can be all rp , wich i doubt seeing the names of people that attended that meeting , even then why wasnt there any info about this on the event boards,

people can say its a rp story plot and no event or avery story line , that is across all shards wich i didnt know at all, can say its like real life you meet him or not
if that is a fact prolly no one would have turned up then , so some people knew he would show up,

i think this sort of story plots or events all of them should be on the event boards , cos thats where most players get their info from .

to me that stinks , and looks more like a insider thing,, if you know who playes Avery then you know where he is , to all the rest Sod them . its our secret

That is an outright lie...

I have no clue, other than it's an EM (I think - and it might not even be one of OUR EMs since it's an all-shard story), and I have NO 'insider information'.

As it happens, if I hear of anything happening, I try tell my friends over ICQ so they can join in. Since I have no clue who you are, in or out of game, I couldn't tell you, or THP for the same reasons - but pancakes about some of us being on an 'insider' circuit really, seriously pisses me off, because I don't like people lying about me - especially people don't know me and who make allegations like that without any evidence bar their own petty spite at being 'left out' of something....

On both Siege and Europa the way I got to know about this was that someone saw Avery and icq'd me.
This was a totally unadvertised jaunt, if you saw Avery you joined in the fun. There was no planned 'event', just some role play chat.

but????? well i must remember to start wandering aimessly around the UO worlds 4 corners.... just in the hope of bumping into one of the friendly gm/ em/ dev team.....

oh and when someone did find out there was a mystery guest by pure chance of course .... why not use the event chat channel?? or even the general chat channel??? to let anyone else interested come to it and if they not they would ignore it??? were all a freindly bunch on europa.....and by no means a huge group either....jeeeze...jeeze ive played europa for 11 years so gimme some credit...

Sorry you missed out THP. I almost did too had it not been for Aurelius ICQing me.

Avery was there for a while and people were telling their guildies and at a point people were turning up to get a bottle, then recalling off. You just had to be in UO at 8-9.

This apparently happened on Monday night at 8pm as well but no one posted about it on the forum, So I'm glad I made Tuesdays to let people know what occured.

Never said you did THP - but labelling the people in the picture an 'RP Crew' is fairly silly, as far as I know those folks RP to a mild degree, but are nowhere near the 'hardcore' folks who do it full scale, all of the time, whilst in-game....

Maybe worth considering that they might be people who travel about the game world a lot, have friends who do the same, and when they notice stuff they mention it - as Mapper did, as soon as he knew something was going on he had a post here so people knew.

Nope - what you do is play the game, doing whatever you enjoy doing, and if you happen to stumble across something - or a friend who does messages you to let you know - you can take part in a tiny bit of the story, just like in real life.... Only thing I'd say you 'must' remember is that it's a game world that if it is to have any life of it's own can't proceed with everything labelled, announced and set up in advance. That's not a 'living' game, it's an item dispensing machine.

THP. you know as well as any of us, if it had been announced throught he event channel there would be people here moaning that they now need to always be in the event channel to get anything, and if it had it been in general it would have been swamped with the 'gimme an item' folks.

The storyline is Avery is leaving because he's sick of the way he's been treated because of the events in the past - it makes no sense at all that someone in that position would be handing out advance notice of his plans to move on, but if you happened to bump into his 'leaving wander around a few places he knew' he might share a drink with you. How much milder a form of RP can we get, for heaven's sakes. Since people were only getting one bottle, I doubt you'll have a lot of luck finding a 'spare', but should I proceed to whine how unfair life is if you manage to get one by buying it, since you have so much more UO gold than I do? Of course not .... same as I don't witter on that the people at most combat related events get items and I've never seen one of those yet, it really doesn't bother me if every style of playing gets something and no one style (apart from being rich ) gets one of everything.

What does bother me is when people who don't get a set of pixels on a server for a game start implying that real-life people who post on things like forums must be in some way cheating or abusing the system in order to get things they don't. Posters on forums are actually people, and deserve some respect and consideration - but it's far too easy for people to forget that when they are so fixated on getting something, no matter how imaginary that 'something' might be, and start insulting or implying dishonesty in a way they would never even consider for a second when dealing with people face to face.....

I just want to say, if we'd have been really greedy, we'd have ran straight off and got our alts for more bottles; but instead almost all of us stayed and tried to respectfully role play out the event once it was discovered. Mapper in particular usually goes above and beyond to let people know, as has been mentioned, and so too does SirZ try and record it for everyone else. I personally wasn't even playing the game at the time Trev let me know Avery was back, because in part due to real life stresses I've not felt that social; so by the time I'd quickly logged into game to catch Avery half way into his farewells, I'd not got the time to be involved and also re-open all the other communication channels I would normally use... I'm not denying that there are people there who are unquestionably greedy, but it really is unfair to claim that any of the names mentioned here are one of them.

Tuesday was an important day for me, needless to say I missed the event.

THP is right about the same people on events. I should say that I knew there will be an event, just didnt know when. No EM told me anything, but I was very suspicious waaay before 21st Tuesday:

17th September: New fiction on UOHerald about Avery.

19th September: Avery was at The Cat's Lair (Chespeake) (a post also mentions he was on Great Lakes a day ago, so got to be a global event)

20th September: Goodbye Avery! (Siege)

So no, those people just follow the posts on other forums, and Europa is always late on global events so they have that advantage.

Have to say if not for the post on this board, close as it was to the meeting, I wouldn't even have been able to turn up late; but then it wouldn't have been a big deal if I missed it, like the thing tonight with Father Grant, was fun but hardly a major event.

In any case it seem there are fairly regular time slots for these things, Tuesday and Sunday and occasionally Friday at 8pm, and if I remember to I'll check the forum some time after 7 on those days just in case there's anything been posted. If I had other plans away from my computer, or just forgot, then again no big deal - but that's just me
