Sorry for the ignorance.

What's the best way to get armor/weapons repaired in-game? Do the NPC blacksmiths in towns do this? Or should this only be done by other players? I read something about a repair service contract... are this available anywhere?

There is an great vendor on the road north-east out of Britain. It is the shop of Miss Millie (I don't remember what the name of her shop was), and she keeps the repair deeds stocked. There is also another good one known as the Yewphorium, just north-east of the Yew Moongate, that sells them in packs.
