Quick swamp dragon question

Want to make sure I'm understanding the typical use of an armored swamp dragon for melee. Do you get the damage reduction benefits only if mounted, or do you get it as long as the dragon is bonded to you and nearby? Which raises another newbie question: does the dragon have to be actively engaged in the fight or just at the scene?

You need to be mounted on the dragon and it must be barded with exceptional barding to get the full 20% reduction.

How is the 20% damage reduction calculated, I'm in the EC and when I mount my exceptionally barded swamp dragon there is no perceivable difference in my physical resist or any other stat I can see.

It's taken directly off of the damage being inflicted.
