Quick report about training at Shame

I had forgotten newbie ninja char on Origin for claiming x-shard gifts. I tried to train this char at Shame dungeon. There is setup trained at Old Heaven:
60 fencing
52 tactic
55 hide
50 stealth
50 ninjitsu
xx - focus and meditation.

Pure newbie char with 1k gp and base armor.

Morphed to rabbit form (+20 stealth) and stealthed around 1st level. Looted some lesser and greater magic items from barrels. Nearly safe. Died once, very easy res from NPC at entrance.

With around 25hci total and spamming mirror image in dog form I was able to solo earth elems and mud pies at entrance. At low hp just run away, regen hp, stealth back.

In about 5-6 hours I have 90 fencing/85 tactic and still have gains at 1st level.
I still can't kill troll, but he chained to walls and can't reach me.

I earned 50k gp, 30-40 resists suit with lot of regens, 40+ hci, 20+ dci and lot of other mods. Collected armor parts to build 80%lrc suit and filled empty magery spellbook with 56 spells (all but 4 circle), so can train mage soon.

And who ever said that "newbie" chars have no chance. This game is for EVERYONE and anyone who wants to explore all the possibilities there are here... Nice job, R Traveler

Sounds like fun.
On a side note I did pull a 4th circle spell scroll out of a chest. I still haven't seen one in a barrel. I'm still hopping around hitting chests and barrel spawn. The static chests have changed. They re-lock themselves and don't re-spawn unless I empty them completely first.
It used to be you couldn't gain skill from them. Not sure if that's still the case.

Oh, there are few spots behind rocks, where you can fight large spawn and not die fast. Monsters come to close combat one at time, all others waiting for their turn.

One of this spot at far NW corner, screen away from altar. Other is at east side between barrels.

my trip to shame not so much fun..

i guess you gotta make a stealther.. cause i made a gargoyle thrower..

first thing, too much spawn.. i run in and 4 earth elemetals, 3 mud guys and some ogre thing.. all hitting me.

then i run around and try to kill one but by the time it took me to get one earth elemental at half health i had 3 more on me.

so i died.

go get ressed up, and after getting res killed 5 times by the spawn by the healer, i got back in to collect my npc bought stuff.

so i get back in there and kill a few more witch takes a long time and guess what..
NO GARGOYLE LOOT :(

with all these changed you would think they would put some kind of system in that if youre a gargoyle, you get gargoyle loot..

what do i need with human armor or human weapons when im a gargoyle?

I had the same issue trying to make a "newbie" archer on tc1, the monsters were too hard and you got mobbed too quickly for it to really be useful as a training ground anymore. There's just way....way too much spawn in there now, before with the spread out earth eles it was the perfect place to train a warrior between about 70-85 skill, now I wouldn't go down there if i'm under gm.

the new loot is nice but shame is generally where those of us who didn't just sit afk with a golem trained at mid skill levels, can't really use it for that anymore, et least not on dexxer type characters.

One question though, how did you get to Shame? That's my biggest concern. On low population shards like Origin it'll be hard to find a gate and you can't recall because you have no skills at first, so the only thing you can do is find a house with a teleporter. But would a newbie know that? I really think there should be some sort of a New Haven to Shame gate/quest unless Despise remains the goto spot. Yeah, you could say let the newbs tough it out and walk/run the distance, but if there are no indications of where to go next after Old Haven, that's sorta crappy.

seriously? shame is like a 20 second run from yew gate...that's serious facepalm for everyone sitting around waiting for a gate or recall rune to get there.....

I ran to Shame on foot from Yew gate. At about 60+ ninjitsu used to shadow-jump (for training too) from Scara Brae. Later at 70+ ninjitsu its easy run in llama form.

I brought my Origin sampire to Shame. I stayed on the first level. I had little trouble with the monsters, but I was running with 120 weapon skill, 120 Bush, and used momentum strike continuously. With MS I could clear it out. I actually found the best spot was to sit with the Cave troll, honor, EOO, then whack away with some feints. Most people were avoiding the trolls. I liked them because I could work up my perfection on the mob for more luck before the mob died.

I normally train all of my warriors in the lizardmen in Despise, then head to the Yomatsu mines. The DC El and Earth El spawn is good to get into the 80s. Then I head deeper in the mines for Yomatsu Warriors. I agree with the notion that there may be a few too many mobs on Shame Level 1 for a developing character to train here. As a side note, even on level 1, I was gaining tactics around 117. You could hit legendary on the first floor of Shame.

I am looking forward to the loot system to go shard-wide. No need to revamp all of the dungeons. If this was live on my normal training grounds I'd be happy just training in the Mines and actually looting the mobs again.

Nicely done R Traveler!!

I enjoyed the post, and quite frankly pleased to see there is a way to train there from scratch. Honestly even if you had to do stealth in the beginning, nothing is stopping you from shifting to other skills once strong enough.

I'm not asking whether you or I know how to get to Shame. I play Origin regularly, had runes already, and have three mages there. I actually gated someone who asked for a gate to Shame from Luna the other day, but I expect Origin to die again once this publish is on all shards.

It might be silly to entertain actual, new players in UO, without UO Cart or resources like Stratics at their disposal. I'm just saying there's no in-game direction from New Haven to Despise, Shame, Brit Cemetery, Luna, or anything. Winging it isn't horrible, but then again I had my trusty T2A handbook back then ;P not sure what players get if they just install the game randomly.

A couple of days ago, someone asked Jeff Skalski on Twitter if he has a "New Player Experience" on his to-do list. His reply was, "In the immediate near term, no. I want to tidy up a few othr systems n the game b4 putting a bigger focus on new playr exp."

Since accounts that are less than a year old can't use either the crystal portal to get to banks and moongates or use the corrupted crystal portal to get to dungeons, I would imagine that any dungeon included in a "new player experience" will probably end up being placed so it is very easy to get to from New Haven and won't require trying to track down other players to get directions or a gate or require you to own a corrupted crystal portal.

Also, I believe dungeons may have special symbols on the map/atlas view in the Enhanced Client, which would probably be the client used by many newcomers and returning players. I haven't used it in a while, so I can't remember if the name of the dungeon also shows up when you're using the "atlas view" to look at a whole facet and mouse over a dungeon. Then again, maybe I'm just remembering things wrong from using the EC. Has been a while. Anyone willing to clarify how someone new to UO or returning to UO would use the map or atlas in the EC to figure out how to get somewhere? I'm drawing a blank trying to remember that aspect of it.

Nice post R Traveller, had been somewhat worried about the shame changes for newbie chars.

Tina Small - I think its a great thing that Jeff is focusing on other things before the NPE. No point having a good NPE if there are terrible bugs or the other systems are not working as they should (ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT)

Finally 100 fencing and 90 (no need more on this scout template) tactic trained at Shame level 1. Can test past GM if someone provide me 110 PS fencing. Found none on luna vendors.

When this publish gets to Legends I'll probably follow a similar training path just to get the MR items needed to raise ninjitsu easier through cat punching, haha.

Mage weapon melee training should work as well, but you probably need at least 80-90 magery to start if using a -wep, since Mud Pies average around 70 wres. All you'd need is a hyper HPR suit, which is pretty easy to obtain through Shame loot. Seems like the best idea though would be to bring the gear to the Abyss and one-v-one Ratmen Henchmen. Low wrestling, high HP. But getting there is a pancake post-Mystic Garg camps.

Well, 102.2 fencing, still reasonable gains at shame level 1.
Like Obsidian posted earlier in this thread, you can probably get to 120 off the LVL 1 mobs alone. You should be able to comfortably get to 115~ off the Earth Eles given the +/-20 rules, which bookends the first level quite nicely (Mud Pies @ 70 and Earth Eles @ 95ish max, per Hunter's Guide). I'm curious, when they revamp Despise, if they'll stick with the 70/95 (50-115) or lowball it.

I have taken Sword, Mace and Fencing to 120(took awhile) in Old Shame(Baja) so you should be able to do it in this New Shame.
