The only boost you can do for your mining are +5 gloves
And yes, you lose half upon failure. Combine all ore into the smallest pieces and smelt 2 at a time for best results.
hammers do nothing for mining, only smithy.
You cannot smelt colored ore unless you have the skill required to mine it in the first place.

A 50% chance of success ( for example ) is still a 50% chance of success, whether you use a large stack of ore or break it down into smaller for many attempts.
Breaking it into smaller stacks will potentially yeild a little more ore, but will take all day... speed vs. risk, you decide...
example:
100 ore in one stack. Fail, zero smelted and 50 ore remain.
100 ore in stacks of 2 with 50% success rate ( for example ) thats 50 tries with 25 failures, leaving you with 25 ore remaining and 50 smelted.
If you succeed on the first try with the stack of 100, you gain 100% of the ore attempted. If you break it into stacks of 2, the best outcome is about 62.5% of the ore attempted ( using above example ).
100% for success on first attempt.
62.5% for breaking into stacks of 2.
50% for success on second attempt of whole stack.
25% for success on third attempt.
