Question: Smuggler's Edge

I'm not sure why this fact escaped notice, but:

The gates to test all three items are still functional in Haven, on TC1. It's the ultimate "try before you buy" opportunity.

Thanks for that pic! It's great to see that it's blessed. My poor poor stealther just might get this.
Good to know that these things can be tested. Thanks.

Seems to be a discrepency on what is advertised on UO Herald....the Smuggler's Lantern doesn't show any faster cast on it! This is the description on Mythic's website:
Smuggler’s Edge
The perfect thief needs a perfect weapon! The Smuggler’s Edge has a 5% chance to proc a stealing attempt when fighting a mob. If the proc is not successful you have a chance of gaining skill in stealing instead. If you have natural stealing skill you have a chance to steal one of two new stealable rares:
  • Smuggler’s Tool Box – Produces lockpicks daily
  • Smuggler’s Lantern – Has Spell channeling, faster cast, and is hued

two things, both to do with the same point.

k, now i use to do the monster stealing for the baulms and such when they first came out and i noticed that with my 120 natural thief i got a LOT of stuff.

with my thief that was RINGED UP to 120 i didnt get much.

so lets assume this.
you need 120 natural to get a) the specials and b) the extra bonus to steal the stuff.

just thought id point out my findings from before and also what is said on EA's description on the item.

now what i wanna know before i go out and try mine is do i need to HIT the critter with it or do i steal like normal?

Yes you need to fight the mobs . and def good to have some hitrating .

Side note . i use full virtue set as it has self rep 5 and is blessed . so only thing i ever need to repair is knife and jewels (made + stealing + hci + dex jewels with imbuing ). I think its the actual times you hit that gives the chanse to steal . Not misses . But i will keep an close eye on this from now on .

An other thing - you dont have to have 120 stealing . But with 120 stealing you get an other 3 % shot at the steal attemt .

* When you attack a monster regardless of whether you have the Stealing skill, if the knife is equipped you have a 5% chance of stealing an item, as introduced with the monster stealing feature in Pub58 but with some changes.

* At the time of theft success when there is a chance to steal a rare item, Stealing skill is temporarily set between 80.0 - 110.0 (random). If the person's natural skill and their temporary bonus are both under 100 then you will fail the steal. If the person's Stealing skill is over 100 (e.g. 105) and the temporary bonus is set to 110.0 then the skill will still be boosted.

* When a GM+ Thief uses the knife they receive a bonus to their base probability of receiving a rare item (usual monster stealable balms, lotions, etc aswell as the new Smuggler's Lantern and Smuggler's Tool Box, both of which can only be stolen when using the knife).

* 100.0-109.9: +1%
* 110.0-119.9: +2%
* 120.0: +3%

Think it show most needed to know about the knife .

First off I agree that paying $5 for a pixel is crazy, thats why I didn't mind the UO gold I spent for it. Ty to the crazy people for spending real life cash on this item. UO seems a day late and a dollar short trying to make money off pixels. I'd rather spend cash on say something like the Ethy coloring tool rather than a blade that will wear out eventually.

The tool boxes are nice to have for my Lockpicker but the Lanterns with the thought of 1 FC was appealing. Silly me for assuming thats what it would be and who knew all the items I have are FC (since it doesn't need to be clarified...) The FC was disappointing, after all these years you think I could think down to UO's level....

As far as working the Edge, I just added a fighting skill to my thief (115 macing) because when I tried it without it, I wasn't hitting anything. I actually had to make contact to allow the blade to work. Yes it takes a very long time to get an item from any given monster. The drops of the toolbox and lantern are hard to get but they are getable. I've been to just about every fel dungeon in my quest for the unique lanterns (of which I haven't seen any yet but am hoping there are such a thing). I don't think it really matters what you kill but I do think that something that gives you a higher karma gain will yield better results. Just be patient, meaning be prepared to spend a lot of time in fel dungeons or the champ spawns to actually get the unique items.

I'm wondering if anybody has gotten a special colored Lantern yet and if so will you post it so I can see. I'd hate to think I've really wasted alot of my time on trying to obtain something that isn't even there...

Here's my 2 cents worth. I bought a smugglers edge and wanted to put it on my garg theif. Well, at that time, I didn't read the info well and didn't realize I could use a tinkerer to convert it to a garg item. But, my garg theif didn't have any weapon skil, anyway. So, I transfered my 119.3 stealing to my miner who already had around 60 swords skill. I have tried to steal from higher end monsters, etc, but didn't get much and got kicked around a lot. I use a bloodwood darkwood suit so it will heal me, as well. My favorite stealing place for the loctions, balms, etc, was always the shadow wisps, so I went there. Yes, you hold the edge in your hand and try to kill them. Since I'm very successfull in stealing, it's good to use something I can kill easily so I don't have to keep seeing the message," This creature has already been stollen from." My swords skill has gone up to just under gm, now, but no stealing gains at all. I get around 1 of the special items (lantern/tinkers) about every 45 min or real time. I've been trying to keep track of how much time between. Sometimes I'll get one about 30 min into it and another in around 15 min, but it might be an hour or more of real play till I get another one.
I love it. I think it's worth the rl money because I get bored easily and this is new. I've learned not to repair it till the durability gets down close to 0 because even with a gm tink with gm lore, it still looses one durability when repaired. You don't try to steal, you just try to kill them. It's really not hard, and somewhat fun, but sometimes a lot frustrating.
That's how I do it. Hope I've helped someone.
