I think she mentioned in another thread that one of the shelties swallowed a plastic toy and needed surgery to remove it. :(

That's my understanding of things.

Of course, she must be really worried as she kept it to a single paragraph.

Hope everything's going good with the dog.

What happened to your poor dog?
Knight swallowed a hard piece of plastic that was part of a *dental frisbee* !

Only thing we can figure is husband was bbqing steaks on the grill while tossing that frisbee thus the smell of steak ended up on the frisbee. Husband said the stupid dental frisbee broke on them while playing and he threw it away. It was a hard plastic yellow ring with sort of jaggy dental edges around it for helpin dogs get tartar off their teeth. Husband thought he had the entire ring when he threw it away. About 3 mos. ago.

Even when the vet mentioned it was a yellow 1 inch hard plastic item stuck in Knight's intestines we could not even remember any such toy. They saved the piece so we could try to id it after his surgery and once we saw it *again post operation* we remembered that dental frisbee we threw away ! Most of the dogs' toys are fluffy items or the regular flyin frisbee plastics. Only thing we can figure is Knight buried that piece of toy for future ...chewing and eating. We know Knight is smart enough to remember where he hides things, cuz before he was even ours, he was our daughter's dog. On one visit here he hid one of his toys, 12 mos. later entering our home as *our* dog, he retrieved a toy he hid somewhere on our property 12 mos earlier.

Last week Knight began throwing up, whatever was stuck in him he was not passing out either way. So last Fri. we called the vet. They are an emergency 24.7 pet hospital. They took Knight in xrayed him seen this 1 inch chunk of whatever stuck in his intestines and they operated on him to remove it.

Lots of stitches and a dog cone around his neck they let him come home to us this tues. on very restrictive movement, mostly sleeping in the kennel here at home, and lamb and rice food and lots of pills. Knight HATES lamb and rice getting him to eat at all was a challenge. He barely ate like 1/4 a can of that gastro intestinal special canned dog food they gave us.

He did manage to bark wag his tail just glad to be home but he was still feelin like hell.

Then yesterday I wake up to take him out to pee, on a leash. As I approached the kennel, a pool of blood was all under him. Three of his sutres he had managed to pop open we figure he accidently hit it with one of his back paws.

He is BACK in ER as of yesterday. All we know at this point is he made it thru the night last night, they have him on IVs and will keep him till Nov. 2. They also found some seepage or leakage from the intestinal stitchin he had inside him, and the 3 outside stitches he broke open. IE they had to GO BACK IN to resew him up inside and out. They *stapled* him this time :(

When I called this morning to see if Knight even made it thru last night, the doctor told me Knight had survived this *surgery #2* and that Knight now hates them, he used to like going in there, but this morning.. he growled at them ! I said I guess I will take his growling at yall, as a good sign ??? Means he still has some feisty fight left in him despite all this hell he been going thru. We may loose him yet but not for lack caring and of $$$$$$$$ all this is costing us trying to save him. :(

We also worrying about King too, cuz the two are very close, so every time he hears a dog bark outdoors, who's bark remotely sounds like Knight, King races to the window lookin for Knight.

Yes sir, very worried. The dog we had right before these two shelties, was our chocolate lab. 4k later nothing we could do to save a 2 yr. old beautiful foundling we gotten, from her death to bone cancer. All of our prior pets over all the yrs. had each lived to ripe very old healthy ages, so having one so young die on us due to bone cancer, well still hurts. Everytime we see a choc. lab we remember our Gypsy. Every time actually anything pet or human dies too early seems to bug us more than folks or pets getting to live long or longer. Death sometimes just don't make no sense, seems exceptionally cruel, when it is on anyone or anything, young ! ya want to fight it, to spit in Death's eyes so ya gamble hopin to beat it ...sometimes ya loose though.

We swore no more pets it hurts too much be they very old dying of natural causes, or being way too young to die, dying of bone cancer.

Then our youngest was rescuing shelties all over Indianna too many for her city to let her and her husband keep. 7 of em ! The city threated to take 2 away from them to adopt out, or put down simply cuz of the 5 dog rule per family up there.

ALL of those 7 dogs had been down here heck Gypsy even with her bone cancer taught em all to be *water dogs and retrievers* right after our kid spent hundreds on grooming for her herd of shelties our Gypsy took em to a mud puddle in our yard for doggie fun ! :) They all looked a mess as our kid said .....$$$$$$$$$$ in grooming fees shot to hell by one labrador retriever !

So yeh we took in 2 of em like our canine grandkids, no one who's a stranger to em was gonna get to adopt them when, our Gypsy had died of her bone cancer on us, so young. Our hope was these two dogs DO get to LIVE, to be OLD DOGS, like all our other cats and dogs had before Gypsy and her devastating bone cancer !

Well Knight is only a 4 yr. old normally alpha male full of spunk lookin for a fight...he now facing the hugest fight of his life...trying to live, trying to keep his spirit up, to try to survive this ordeal.

Well ya know that each pet has it's own personality !

Our kids been saying even if he doesn't make it ya still got King. I go yes !
But just like the 3 of you are each different, so are people's pets personalities. :)

King is *cerebreal* I can turn on a flashlight and he gets all into chasing sparkly lights !

Knight, on the other hand hates sparklies, & barks at it all like it is just stupid stuff, that he does not fathom chasing light beams, so he wants frisbees and chasing and fetching and catching and he is sooo FIESTY energetic, while King is more 'whata' kinda mood unless I turn on a flashlight and then King goes in for the attack at *sparklies* :) ! I toss a frisbee to king he expects me to fetch it. :) King enjoys chasing Knight, chasing the fristbee. Knight always brings the frisbees back, wanting me to toss it some more. The two while very close both shelties, are definately not the same personality types.

And yes I like personalities that just seem at times to be... BONEHEADS, that are stubborn & feisty and seem to be a handful, for most folks are usually not a challenge, for me, cuz I fathom their 'uniqueness' ! *sort of like some of our posters here* hehe :) so yeh we are just hoping mr. stud muffin sheltie, makes it thru all this too soon yet to know !

Update !

Knight was permitted to come home to us Nov. 2 with many restrictions.

Cone on his head, only permitted movement on a very short leash and no jumping around to prevent him from breaking open any stitches. Meals several times daily *hand fed* due to the cone on his head and he had not eaten in 3 wks. just IV foods, so small doses of soft lamb and rice can food few ounces several times daily. And if he threw it all up or could not pass it thru his stitched intestines, we were to call the vet and or bring him back in there. He kept the special RX can food down though.

It is now Nov. 13, he is eating 2 slightly larger chicken/beef stew combo dog food meals daily, keeping it down, eliminating it all properly ! :) He is also sneaking bits of his favorite dry dog food of beef, out of his brother's dog food bowl when we are not looking *which is a good sign* !

Knight's post surgical weakness has now become more like his normal healthy strengths in that I about loose my shoulder, trying to herd him on a short leash when he wants to try to go chase King, in the back yard.

We may try to take his cone off his neck tomorrow, to see if Knight will try to behave or tear at his itchy shaved stitches or not. . with supervision ! :)

In otherwards today is the first day since mid Oct. Knight seemed more like his usual bullheaded strong alpha male personality Sheltie dog.

I said to the dog...

'Welcome back' and we actually feel like he has excellent chances now, to survive all this. The pricey dog Vet operations, IVs and confinement was a big gamble for us to pay for, but it seems to have paid off, his personality as a fighter against the odds was in him, thus we felt it well worth the gamble to try to save his life, if he made it through all this, and it seems like he is well on the way to doing just that. :)

YEA!!!

Don't know what your vet has him on but I hope it isn't Science Diet. Many times when my pets had problems (thiroid, unknown vomiting and bloody diareaha; and or just poor health)
They put them on SD, I prefer Blue and it has better ingredients and has much better results, also home cooked meals do just fine if you know what to mix in. I took a bag of Blue into my vet and asked if it was OK to feed instead of SD and she said it was just fine.
If you are going to feed vet priced food please look at some of the alternatives.
Best wishes to Knight and to you and yours.

He got my own baked chicken and carrots when I was going into their place to feed my dog, cuz he would not eat at all for them.

Nah it is not Science Diet, was a canned gastro intestinal post op EN brand set of canned food of lamb and rice mix ...which I had to doctor up with chicken or beef broth, cooked carrots or boiled egg or my pasta on it, cuz he didn't want their food. Both dogs like my cooked carrots for some reason with chicken or beef, of home made foods. They normally just prefer to eat some purina dry dog food, beefy veal chicken kibble combo. I was buying cans of just about anything remotely chickeny or beefy of any store brands like mighty dog and the rest, just to tide him over till he could eat more solids, cuz the knight just was not fond of their vet selected EN LAMB rice crapola ! But I could not give Knight anything with beef till we could see if he could even digest cooked chicken first for several days.

Who ever heard of a sheltland sheepdog wanting to EAT that which he instinctively watches over, like lamb meat anyhow ? :)

I wish you could look into his eyes now though, depths like wells so deep all giving us a loving look as if his eyes are saying, THANK YOU for giving me a chance to survive this mess.

My husband says tomorrow Knight will be getting pure grade beef TBONE steak strips right off our grill. :)

Knight been eating his fav. dry food more today, its BEEF dry food, his fav.

QZ,

I missed this thread earlier - today is the first time I had seen it. I just wanted to say how glad I am that Knight is improving!! I'm glad I didn't see this thread till he was doing better - the waiting would have been awful! I'm sorry about all you and Knight have been through - just so glad things are looking to have a happy ending.

Fingers crossed for you all,
Aislin
