PvM Template

I recently have come back to UO after a 4 - 5 year break. Unfortunately this was evidently enough time for EA to wipe all my old characters out so have to start over.

The character that I played the most before was a Necro/Mage
120 Mage
120 Eval
100 Med
100 Focus
100 Inscription
100 Necro
100 SS

However I always seemed to have issues soloing things with this character. At this point I was going to make another Necro/Mage but from what I am reading a Sammy/Pally Hybrid seems to be the way to go.

I guess my question is, is a Necro/Mage still viable for PVM. I will not be doing any PvP with this character. Currently I will be playing with a friend who is making a Pally/Archer or a Sammy/Pally, he has not decided. Obviously end goal would be Doom. Only did it one time in the past and there were so many people there I got nothing. Was hoping with less people playing we would be able to duo kill the spawns.

In the past we mainly hunted Shadow Dragons for gold. He would stay at range I would summon an Earth Elem and then Animate the dead ones. Usually had an Earth Elem and atleast 2-3 of the animated corpses running around.

Anyway any advice would be appreciated.

As a mage that works fine. In doom use wraithform to absorb mana, when casting EV:s or something you can use lich form for extra mana regen.

I'm just running around with my first full-time necro-mage, and that character is truly incredible in some situations, and pretty lousy in others. It's specialty is charging into large groups of small to mid sized things and annihilating most of it (up to normal dragons is no problem). This makes it the perfect champion spawner.

It's also pretty great in Doom, since you can use wraith form, fireball the heck out of anything that moves (with appropriate slayer spellbook) and switch to flame strikes for the DF (less side-spawn that way) and never run out of mana.

You won't be able to fight the big things solo, but for versatility and survivability, it's a great template to run.

For an extra bonus, drop focus and add in spellweaving. If you can find an arcane focus on a regular basis, it has some great support spells for most situations.

Ok so I know this has nothing to do with my original topic but did they take out 8x8 or something?

I am trying to raise magery 8x8 on a boat and when I get a skill gain I can never manage to get a second. It is gonna suck if they took it out.

Edit: OK Ignore all the above I was just being dumb. I was playing on the KR client but it was so buggy it crashed every 15-20 mins so I switched to 2d and forgot to change it from show skill gains for 10 in tenths to 1 in tenths.

I swear I have been on a boat doing it and I seem to be gaining like clock work every 8 tiles. Must just have been getting lucky/a coincidence. Will just stand still and do it.

What's a good amount of SDI for that build? I'm currently in the process of skilling that up, but I still need to gear him out where I can.

Pendant of the maji: 5%
Scrappers: 25%

(can't afford the crystalline ring or orny)

Total: 62% SDI (also have 2/6 FC/FCR, 40% LMC, 100% LRC, and 40% DCI with all resists over 60) If I tried to get higher than that, I'd need to sacrifice things I don't want to sacrifice like MR, resists or LRC.

With that, I could build a very nice suit with the remaining bits and walk over nearly everything I see just casting wither. If I ever get in a place where getting close is mandatory (unseens, players, etc), then I switch out the scrappers for a staff of pyros.

I've always had a hard time fitting a Pendant into my suit. I use a Rune Beetle Carapise and the lower resist of these 2 pieces makes it hard for me to get my resist high enough.

Is there some trick or armor piece I'm missing that could help?

On my lower resist version of the suit, I have the RBC as well. For the higher resist version that I use for my necromancer, I replaced the RBC with the Heart of the Lion.

The good bit is the Kasa has a ton of resists as well. But in addition to the above bits, I also wear sleeves (14/8/6/9/24 with 19LRC 7 LMC), Gloves (17/22/19/6/6 with MR2) and leggings (14/20/8/17/8 with MR1). I also paid way too much for at least two of those pieces (I'd pay the million and a half for the sleeves again).

The weakness of my suit is that without my 16% LRC scrappers, I'm forced to use reagents (84 LRC without the book), which, in essence, means I'm carrying reagents with me wherever I go in case I need to use my pyros staff or a slayer book.
