If you've been reading about the Putrid Undead Gargoyles spawning in the Holy City and are curious about the quest for them, then here's some info you may need. That quest is the third tier quest from Zosilem. In order to reach that tier you have to progress through 4 other tiers. There are 2 possible quests at each tier to choose from. Unless you plan to do a LOT of Medusa runs you will probably choose the alternate quests. Even then it is a long road to get there.

The items you will need to reach the third level without doing Medusa and without doing iron beetles forever are:

175 boura skins (not pelts)
25 seared fire ant goo
15 doughs
5 piles of inspected agapite ingots (100 ingots total)
100 fairy dragon wings
200 undamaged iron beetle scales
200 leather wolf skins

If you like doing the iron beetles add 50 more scales and 5 piles each of dull copper, shadow iron, copper, and bronze inspected ingots then drop the seared ant goo and agapite ingots.

I hope folks will consider how much work goes into getting to the point you can accept the 3rd tier quest and not hog the Putrid Undead Gargoyles without even having the quest.

I can hope right? rolleyes:

Also forgot to mention, there are 57.5 hours of cooldown time total in between all these quests. So you won't likely do them in a week.

Thanks for bringing up the subject Beastmaster. It's nice to finally be able to complete these quests.

Stranger did a great guide for this a while back...

This thread goes into full detail for those that are interested.

When you reach the point that you're doing the tier 2 or tier 3 quests, note that the timers apply to the repetition of a specific quest and not to doing any one of the other quests. I managed to get to the point of doing the tier 3 quests on Origin over a period of about 2 days without even really trying that hard.

For example, there are four Percolem tier 2 quests (Boura, Boura, and More Boura; Revenge of the Slith; We've Got An Ant Problem; and Ambushing the Ambushers) and three tier 3 quests (It Makes Me Sick; It's A Mad, Mad World; and The Dreamers). There is a two hour timer to repeat any specific tier 2 quest and a 24 hour timer to repeat any specific tier 3 quest. (There is no timer for completing the tier 1 quests and there are three different ones.) You need to complete five tier 1 quests before Percolem offers you any tier 2 quests, and must complete 10 tier 2 quests before Percolem offers you any tier 3 quests.

So, if I'm working my way up through the quests for the very first time and have reached the point where Percolem will offer me tier 2 quests, I can do the boura one and then go back to Percolem for my reward and ask for another quest. At that point, what he'll offer me includes all three of the tier 1 quests and the three remaining tier 2 quests. If I decide to do the Revenge of the Slith quest and two hours haven't passed since I did the boura level 2 quest, my next attempt to get a quest from Percolem will include all of the tier 1 quests and just the remaining two tier 2 quests (ants or kepetch ambushers).

I doubt that most people will get through all four of the tier 2 quests in two hours. The kepetch one takes longer because those little buggers don't spawn in droves (thank goodness too!) and the fire ant one usually requires you to hit up two mini champ spawn areas in order to kill 20 of those pests.

Once you've done your 10 tier 2 quests, you'll get your choice of the three tier 3 quests, plus tier 2 quests (variety depends on which ones you've completed in the last two hours), plus all the tier 1 quests.

Now keep in mind that all of what I've typed above is what I've experienced on Origin in the last couple of days. I've barely touched these quests on any other shards, so perhaps the system there is working differently and your choice of quests at any one time is more limited. (And when I talk about choosing a quest, I simply mean clicking on Percolem again if he's offered you a quest you don't want. That will make him offer you another quest. Quick tip for telling the quests apart: For the tier 1 quests, Percolem's greeting to you is just, "Greetings." For the tier 2 quests, he says, "Greetings, hunter." For the tier 3 quests, he says, "Greetings, my friend.")

I do understand the concern about being able to complete the tier 3 quests, especially on a heavily populated shard. Let's hope the devs are watching and don't drag their heels with regard to adjust spawn frequency and quantity if necessary. My guess is they could also adjust the loot on the putrid undead gargoyles to make them less attractive prey for people who aren't in the middle of a quest.

Tina is correct about the cooldown timers. They are specific to 1 particular quest. I just did a tier 1 Thepem quest and was immediately able to do the alternate tier 1 quest. Now that both are done I'm on the timer. So as long as you are willing to do both quests offered on each tier you can cut the cooldown time in half. Still its close to 30 hours to reach tier 2 not counting the time to do the quests.

I started collecting some beetle scales today. I killed the first spawn and then the respawn a few minutes later. Now over 30 minutes later there is no spawn. Spawn is broken. Going to take a LONG time to collect 200 scales when they won't even spawn.

Beastmaster, I don't have time to look this one up, but I seem to recall that you need to call some of the other stuff (wolf spiders?) that spawns with the iron beetles in order to get the beetles to respawn.

I figured that as well. I killed all the wolf spiders (through multiple respawns) in the area and a blood elemental too, with no effect. Only thing I could figure was maybe a wolf spider got lured off somewhere before I could get to it.

Nah, the beetles have been broken since Beta. Only thing worth doing in my opinion are the kill quests from Percolem, especially the Toxic Slith. Some nice high end rewards from the other Tier 3s but not worth the effort in short run.

If the red hued dudes outside Holy count for Sick, I'm on that, hehe. Otherwise, pretty random, and a lot of work.

It's a heck of a lot easier to find that guide under the 'quests' heading on uo.stratics.com, but thanks for the reminder that it needs updating now that the quest can actually be completed - or can when the publish goes live. :)

I went back an hour or so later and it was fixed. I assume I lost a wolf spider somewhere. You do have to kill the spawn of wolf spiders that spawn in the entrance corridor before the beetles will respawn. You do not have to kill the wolf spiders further back by the blood elementals.

The drop rate on the beetle scales is rather low, but that's ok by me. I for one don't think every quest should be doable in a day or even a week for that matter.

Dunno if anyone said it, but good way to get the Leather Wolf items is to have a leather wolf golem and have it attack things that wont kill it, itll summon grey leather wolfs to help it attack, you can kill the grey ones for the items. The way I always did it was I'd have my wolf attack Gaman around Homare gate, used my spellweaver so i can have Gift of Renewal on my wolf incase he gets hurt.

Ouch...I hope the reward will be worth it...hopefully it will be much better than what you get for the other chain-quest I posted about an hour ago, as linked here:
