Pure thief - feasable build or waste of time?

I just returned to UO and look about for something to do. I was thinking of building an elf pvp thief for straight stealling in Fel

Going with steal, snoop, hide, stealth.

I hear taming/lore are the in thing, but in the old days fencing, tac and poison were popular.

What about lockpicking - needed or nice to have.

Alos looking for a PVP thief guild on Atlantic - any hits?

Template

I'm not a fan of the taming/lore method: the template is powerful, but less versatile than many thief templates. Ninjitsu will serve you much better in the long run. My template looks like this:

120 Fencing
110 Ninjitsu
110 Stealing (80 real)
100 Hiding
100 Snooping (90 real)
95 Magery
80 Stealth (40 real)
80 Poisoning

Skills

Magery - I initially tried chivalry, but eventually dropped it for magery for the following reasons. First, I can near insta-heal/cure with only 2/6 (as opposed to 4/6 with chiv). Second, the teleport and invisibility spells are lifesavers, as you can cast them while visible and/or aggro'd. Third, if I see a bot on a track, I can mark a rune to return later. Fourth, I can gate for team stealing. Lastly, incognito/polymorph aren't especially useful, but they can be fun sometimes. :)

Ninjitsu - In my mind, ninjitsu is indispensable, for several reasons:

1) Shadowjump. The number one thief killer, in my mind, is passive reveal. If you stealth up to an elf, you have an over 50% chance to be passive revealed, and your outlook's not too bright against humans and gargoyles, either. As soon as you're revealed, you can expect an "all kill." However, with shadowjump, you never need risk passive reveal: just shadowjump next to your target. Also, shadowjumping doesn't count as movement, so it won't close the packs you've snooped. Once you get the hang of it, you can shadow jump to every player at a champ, open all their packs, and sit back and watch for the best scroll. Shadow jump is also a way to avoid being hit/revealed by earthquake/meteor strike, as shadowjump casts much faster than those two spells.

2) Wolf form. Besides giving you increased movement speed, wolf form gives you +20 hp. As soon as you make a steal, hit wolf form and run for it. Once you're in the clear, just hide and stealth away at mounted speed. Unless I get trapped in paralyze fields, I'm never, ever killed in wolf form.

3) Shurikens. Kill bots and supposed "PvPers" who like to shoot arrows at people from within the safety of their houses.

4) Smoke bombs. If someone is flagging you, you cannot hide without them.

5) Death strike. The further they run, the quicker they die.

Suit

My suit includes: Burglar's Bandana, Pendant of the Magi, Shadow Dancer Leggings, Quiver of Infinity, Totem of the Void, Ornament of the Magician, Cloak of Silence, and an imbued ring (15 hci, 3 fcr, 20 lrc, 15 fire, 7 cold), as well as custom gloves, arms, and tunic. When I cast gate travel, I throw on the Conjurer's Grimoire to bring me to 110 magery. When I'm killing a bot, I replace my totem of the void with the Conjurer's Trinket to increase my damage and hci. The suit was surprisingly easy to piece together (on Europa, no less) and has 100 lrc, 2/6, 30 lmc, and all 60s.

Shard

If you are looking to get into PvP thieving, I would strenuously recommend a different shard than Atlantic. Atlantic is home of the PvP thief guild P0O - UO's largest thief guild. P0O's founder, Shinobi, is a nice, outgoing, and charismatic guild master. Largely as a result of his leadership, the thief population on Atlantic has exploded. At any given time, you may trip over three or four thieves at the Yew gate. In a nutshell, the shard is too crowded for more thieves.

The introduction of insurance has greatly reduced the number of stealable items. There are too few items and too many thieves on Atlantic to make for profitable thieving (unless, of course, you're willing to use less scrupulous methods, such as having people buy things from your fel vendor an immediately stealing back the item that you sold them).

My suggestion would be to try our a shard with a smaller thief population. You'll find it funner, I think.

As far as a thief guild . . . there's no better community than THIEF, in my view. Look here: http://www.uothief.com.

No Anatomy?

is fencing only a method to introduce poison?

No need for throwing?

What armor would you wear while pulling the other stuff together? (FYI - it may seem easy to pull all the pieces together, it seems like it will be incredibably hard or expensive to pull together).

I just created an elf char with 50 mage and 50 stealing, Gonna buy and grind up the rest.

thanks for the help.

Well, for my pure thief, I had this:

Stealing 100 (120 with leggings)
Snooping 100
Hiding 100
Stealth 80 (100 with leggings)
Wrestling 100
Ninja at least 70 for llama form and Shadow Jump
Chivalry at least enough for heal, cure, and recall, think that's around 30 or 40

I also had 100 resist at one point. Then I switched it to 100 detect so I could reveal everyone who was hiding from me. Especially those scripters :D

I used wrestling for disarm. Yeah you can do it with fencing, but with wrestling you can automatically steal the weapon disarmed without having to disarm yourself.

As far as tactics is concerned . . . you may have to decide whether you're primarily a thief or an assassin. Deadly poison + death strike will kill a mule who refuse to pay his or her dues - even, perhaps, the occasional tamer who trespasses within the Jhelom pens. However, if you're planning to kill pro PvPers, you're going to have to make some adjustments.

At bare minimum, a PvP thief needs stealing, snooping, hiding, and stealth, leaving you with room for three or four additional skills. Three or four skills may not prove very effective against players who can devote all 720+ skill points toward PvPing.

If you cannot afford any skill increasing items or armor, you'll have to simplify. My Siege thief doesn't rely on any armor, for obvious reasons. When he is finished, he'll look like this:

120 stealing
110 mage
110 ninja
100 snoop
100 hiding
100 tracking
75 stealth

To remove the need for reagents, you could exchange mage for 50-or-so chivalry.

So Syrus,

your build is purely stealing from Players? How would you survive in a dungeon with no offensive skills? Not judging, just asking. Do you just hide, grab and run?

I've been away a long time but back in the day, you needed some offense.

I have fencing and poisoning and was on the fence about the need for tactics. I have steal, snoop, hide, stealth, mage, ninj, fencing, poisoning - I know too many - that's why I'm asking how to survie with no EV or tacs for offensive punch for that pesky mongbat.

I guess the other way to go is to just hang around the bank or the gates and annoy people...which is fine by me since I expect to end up dead much of the time.

You won't be able to overcome an entire spawn guild alone, no matter how much tactics you have. After I make a swipe at a spawn, if I am being chased by someone, I do the following:

1) Deadly Poison (get them fumbling to cure)
2) Shadow strike (puts me into stealth)
3) Wolf form, stealth, shadow jump.

If you want, you could drop poison for tactics. You won't be able to infect with your fencing weapon, but you'll still have DP from shurikens, plus a little extra umph on the damage front. Just be sure you have at least 80 in either tactics or poison, as this will allow you to shadow strike.

Another warrior-inspired option is to drop poison and fencing for tactics and archery. Dismount and armor ignore are never pleasant.

On the other hand, you could raise mage to 120, use a mage weapon, and bring eval to 120. That'd give you some fire power.

you can also just use a mage weapon insteal of having wep skill or wreslting. you wont be able to disarm, but people switch out thier weps often. i play on siege and i love it, you should check it out. the builds are a bit different here mostly due to the fact that you cannot base your template around suit skill bonuses, but it is still very doable. The best thing about siege is, you can steal anywhere. i run 120(eventaully) steal, 100 snoop, 100 hiding, 75 stealth (use leather or no armor), 105 ninja (for consistent llama form and shuriken), 110 magery (for spells, travel, and mage weapon), and 60ish spellweaving (for pixies) and the remainder in detect (havent worked it yet, but will be around 50). this temp works out well for me. if i want to kill someone i can summon my pixie army, DP shuriken, all kill, smack with my kryss. cant go toe to toe vs a pvper, but its ok, i normally just throw DPs while there is a field fight goin on so i can try to get some ground loot when the other guy kills em haha. as for dungeons, if you want to steal items in a dungeon, all you need to do is stealth around, steal item, then run off and smoke bomb or hide again. so, if you decide not to do atl, check out siege, its a blast.
