Prospecting tool issue?

So I've come to value these prospecting tools that I at one time would leave laying on the floor in large mounds in the smithy shop. However, when I go to use this tool to upgrade an ore spawn, it doesn't upgrade unless I hit it 2 or 3 times with the tool, which I found takes me 2 charges to actually get to go one level up.

Anyone else have this issue?

I always found that I only need to hit once with a pick/shovel, then use the tool, then back to the pick/shovel for it to work. However, more often than not, if it tells me Valorite can be mined, all I get is iron

Isn't this the second time this week you posted something in the Smith Forum that probably would have been a better fit in the mining forum?

Regardless, I usually hand them over to the NPC Blacksmiths when I'm rewarded with them. I usually turn in a book of 300 BODs at a time that can lead to huge piles all over the Smith shop if I don't hand them over. Besides, handing them over to the NPC Smiths makes them so happy!

Whoops... mining, blacksmithing. It's all the same anyway, right?

One stingy guy posted this method: STAY MOUNTED. Use the shovel and hit rock first, get an error message, but that establishes the spot as a previous target. Then hit it with the prospecting tool to find the ore type. Only then if it is a good spot, get off the beetle. Saves wear on the shovel and prospecting tool.

Hit with shovel first, then prospect. Doing it like this I have never had a problem.

Also as to upgrading a verite to valorite and only getting iron, you do have min. 99 skill to mine the valorite, right? It doesn't work like garg picks to let you mine what you normally couldn't, you need least 99 to mine an upgraded to val vein.
