Pre-patch mares and Bane Dragons Sell, Trade, Keep, or Hold, Advice Please

I just recently hit my 14 year on my account, so I was able to move some pets I've been holding over to Atlantic. I've always liked UO and I've always been a hobbyist/casual tier PvM player. I've had these guys gathering dust in the stable but I'd like some advice on what to do with them. Here's the list:

3 Pre-patch Nightmares
Nightmare 1 - Old School "Pure Black" 63%
308/98/100, 514/98/100, 63/33/37/34/23
Nightmare 2 - Short Mane 72%
315/113/125, 511/113/125, 60/40/30/37/23
Nightmare 3 - Old School "Pure Black" 63%
301/95/91, 511/95/91, 59/36/40/36/30

3 Bane Dragons
Bane 1 - 54%
613/128/125, 530/125/125, 64/47/35/53/25
Bane 2 - 57%
587/125/126, 539/125/125, 68/48/42/59/32
Bane 3 - 50%
593/125/125, 538/125/125, 63/49/38/53/25

The % is the UO-Cah rating used with 125 for int and dex if the number was below that.

Banes will get a Plat each now. More if you find someone who has more gold than they need.

Yup you can ruin a bane quite nicely for PvM use.

I was hoping for some advice as well. I'm surprised that experience with legacy mares and bane dragons is something that no one has experience to share about. I'll keep everyone posted as I proceed on my own, but I was really hoping to hear people's experience and insights. Maybe going forward there could be a raffle for anyone that has advice that is helpful to me and to the community overall.

There's also the other side of the topic to consider. The discontinued pets retain premium value when left untrained, and command the high prices so a future owner can build (or ruin) as desired. A plat for an untrained bane could be considered a steal, at this moment, for an item with an ever-shrinking untrained supply.

So, what's your advice? Just hold them on Atlantic or sell all of them or part of them? Same advice for the legacy nightmares as the banes? Keep them for PvM, or trade them for something? As a hobbyist level player, if I sell a bane for a plat, what would be a good idea to buy with that to make my casual PvM play more enjoyable. That's the kind of stuff I'm needing advice on.

My advice would be same as above, and also if you decide to sell, sell in the Traders Forum where pets are sold. Would keep the highest two banes, and highest two pre-patch mares. Do not train any of these, till you trained a couple of Cus also, or regular mares first, and when you decide to train any of the pre-patch pets train them in Test Center first and see what they do. Also when you decide to scroll, be careful how to spend your gold. Top scrolled all 120'd pets like Cus etc. are not hugely overpowered as compared to not all 120'd pets. For instance 120 Chiv is more important and much cheaper than 120 wrestling and tactics. These can be 115 etc. Unless you plan to sell the pet, then all is different. Also lot of folks think that pre-patch pets, esp. banes should be all 120'd. Before you scroll and train, I would first look at the tamers forum, that has been put together by folks here. Been going through it myself. Good reading and saved me from some serious mistakes!
Good luck friend.

Comes down to personal preference, though I would resist exchanging a rare, no-longer-available item for gear or consumables still obtainable in game. The worst outcome would be receiving a plat and holding the coin while it dies to inflation.
If you are wanting to build an all-round pet for general game play, legacy mares and banes would not be a top choice. Better served by something with healing, or a more focused damage type and skills tailored to the intended opponent. Train and stable an array of pets before ever advancing the legacy ones. Select 110 scrolls for advanced pet training are good enough for casual play (can always leave points available to 120 later). Make all training mistakes on Test Center shard.

I've trained a couple of the new "rare" spawn mares(void color and spotted color), to test out template ideas, but found out that when I'm done I really don't adopt them as the main pets I hunt with. I built a necromare to see if I enjoyed one of the unique templates you can make with a mare, it had a lot of, "wow that's cool!" factor, but it ended up being just a stable pet. They aren't bad templates. I made a necromare like I said and also tried out a mystic mare. I consider them semi failures because they just have a lack of "fun" to them. I end up using a couple of general hunter pets mostly, both Discord pets (a cu and a firesteed), and a few specialty pets for certain situations (also cu and firesteeds). The best "rare and no longer spawning" pet I've had is the anniversary horse, which you can often find as a statue and buy so you get a few options on color. It really is fun as a 3 slot pet and is a great help for turning over the nightmare spawn or revisiting the firesteeds to get a good spawn.

What about trading for some of the other rare pets, like a blaze cu or the war horse (the one you can say "trick" to) or the colored faction horses? Is in the same range, as far as value? Would it be something that could be developed and end up using, rather than just become a stable pet?

Really appreciate hearing people's takes on it.

Blaze Cu is really something you want to find yourself and not buy, unless you are with 10-20 platinum (Billion Gold) in the bank and want to just blow of 4-6 plat (Billion) for a shiny deco pet. It is something you want to find and sell, really.
Dread Warhorse is going to cost you about 1 plat also (Billion). I think it is mostly a PvP item, just like banes, it is a keepsake pet. If you have one, would not sell yet just wait. I would not buy one unless you are a billionaire and are into either PvP or collecting. As far as PvP pets are concerned by the way, PvP pets are pretty good to kill newbies. Nothing can touch a good, trained fully geared PvP'er with specific template and skills.
I would stick to tuning your template for specific things and have your specific pet enhance your character's abilities rather than otherwise. Goo to events like Scalis etc for gear also, have found some pretty sweet items there the few Scalis I participated in.
I have seen great posts on these by @PlayerSkillFTW , @Pawain , and others in this forum. Also uo-cah.com if your friend as well. Lots of posts and lots of things to learn, still going through them, but I don't think it is a waste of time form me. Awesome info.
Good luck my friend, and be careful with all PP pets you have, do not risk them.

I think I'll try to use test system to figure out if there's any way to make a PvM use bane dragon, but it seems like a reasonable thing to get rid of two of them and see what it could fund, in terms of trades. Also at least get rid of one legacy mare.

Maybe trade for a Dread Warhorse, just for the reason that I don't have one. Other than being able to say trick, they seem a little less capable than a legacy mare. Seems likely it would end up being a stable pet, but could end up having that nostalgia vibe. I just can't think of anything that would be that helpful to trade for, outside of the convenience of buying/trading for bundles of 120's to apply to them. In theory, you could make a sampire and solo collect them on an empty shard, but this is where my "hobbyist" level starts to show. In order to gear and skill and become proficient to do that would probably take a couple of years at my game play rate. So I'm looking at it as a way to short cut that.

What are some examples of what you're saying about using the pet to enhance your character's abilities? I'm just running a very basic tamer mage at this point. My connection is not that great so I run hiding and resist as the extra skills on the base.

i have a warhorse i havent trained and really have no plans to train but i keep it purely so i can run up on people and say "trick" and have my horse fart on them totally worth it.

But you can build a Sampire tat rocks any Champ, very quickly and with some effort. But you need to go to community events and hunts dead Scalis is your friend, also other Boss events, believe it or not even Swoop in Twisted Wield. Get 3-4 good loot items, then reforge/imbue 3 more or have someone make them for you, and have them make weapons for these spawns, and then master the technique of being a sampire. Being PK's at spawns is ok also. You just regroup and restart. Also, you can get power scrolls with treasure maps in Fel, uo-cah.com has the list of maps/facet etc.
I would not blow away 1 plat to buy scrolls for scrolling pets, any pets even Banes. Unless you are positive or almost positive that you can recoup that 1 plat. should you decide to sell sometime (PS PvP folks may NOT buy a bane with Chiv/AI on it for instance, and if STR or other stats are messed, nobody would buy at cost of what you spent).
