Poor Malabelle! or maybe she is a Saint?.

The post tonight about Dawn and the memory that her house is on fire in Yew brought another old memory to mind.

Although the memory is pretty murky I seem to remember Malabelle was killed by Belo Ondariva in a hut outside Vesper. This was a matter of years ago.

Nevertheless her corpse still lies in a hut and is recognisably a corpse. I must conclude from this that her body has saponified and become adipocere. This is a condition often attributed to saints and the flesh has become incorruptible. So the question is was she a saint and we simply did not recognise it at the time?.

Even if she was not the poor soul is long overdue for a decent burial wouldn't you say?.

Fact: Malabelle was found dead, after being completely forgotten about, about 5 days after I corrected her identity in my news story, "The Black Necklace", originally posted as a news story here on UO Stratics.

Malabelle was originally evil but refuted her evil ways and embraced the virtues before she died.
I would say, in the world of Britannia yes she is a saint.

Slight warping of the facts...

Malabelle was involved in the plot prior to being found dead. For quite some time prior to being found dead. ;)

But that wasn't reported until after her death. She was completely out of the public picture since the Trinsic invasions until then.

And what was her involvement then when this came to light after her death? She was investigating, digging, spying, in Tokuno. And as soon as I post this story, and reveal things about her that people in Tokuno wouldn't know about, she turns up dead.

Actually, I personally had a conversation with a couple of weeks prior to her death, and the night that we all found her dead was a continuation of plot events that we were actually supposed to be meeting up with her about.

Yes, there was a huge gap of time between her uses previously, but she was active, in-game prior to her death.

Oh really? I never saw one news article, nor one post on the GL forums, about any of that. But that's ok. UO is a world, not "just a game". Now I know.
And I also know that, at the time, when I mentioned this, no one informed me of this. Just sayin'.

Actually, at the time, there was a lot of clarification going on because, according to the log I have of that particular evening (and yeah, I'm looking for older logs -- just trying to figure out where I stuffed them), you actually arrived late, after Malabelle was already dead, and were inquisitive as to her involvement in that evening.

My personal portion of the conversation was surprise that she was Odric's secret contact (this is, of course, before we knew Odric was a Shadowlord).

Keep in mind that just a week or two before her death, Keeonean was killed by an aspect of Minax as well.

It's not like Minax's involvement was secret, nor should Malabelle's involvement in anything have been a surprise either. I'm just saying that the coincidence of you updating your story and her death are coincidental, not cause and effect. They're not linked events.

I'm not too sure about that. I've long suspected, and others have said it's the case (although I can't verify their accuracy) that what's said on these boards (semi and/or official) is "in play". But I'm not sure. The timing is curious, and something had to cause Malabelle's outing as a spy.

Also, who killed Malabelle? Was it Minax, or Odric/Ramuz, or Bela Ondariva?

As i said in my op I seemed to remember it being Bela who killed her. Did a little research and found this report in the following link.

BNN: A Disturbing Report - UOGuide, the Ultima Online encyclopedia

Seems my memory is not as bad as i thought.

Whatever, a nude corpse permanently littering the landscape is not particularly inspiring. Bury her already.

Her body's not on GL anymore, but the rest of the breakage is. There's a book from an EM event in that place, and I wonder if that was intentional so players knew the body is gone. If so, that would be the case on other shards, most likely. (Thinking Malabelle as a Liche, or something.)

Here's the thing I keep thinking about. When Odric was revealed as a Shadowlord named Ramuz...
  • He escaped and went to Cove. Why Cove?
  • These Relentless Trackers showed up there, in Cove, with Ramuz the Shadowlord.
  • Where as these same Relentless Trackers showed up at the supposed meeting spot where Odric/Ramuz led the Guard.
  • And as these same Relentless Trackers were at the scene of Malabelle's corpse discovery.

These Relentless Trackers first showed up with Belo Ondariva, the Warlord, at Malabelle's death scene.
They seemed to be tracking none other than Odric/Ramuz.
And at these times, Odric had the Black Necklace, taken from Minax herself. *And wasn't it Minax's magic that had sealed off the Tokuno Isles from the rest of Sosaria? *Hadn't Minax had some hold on the Tokuno Isles?

*Those last two are questions, from my vague memory that I'm not sure about.

So, I think maybe it was like this...
Belo Ondariva was using the Relentless Trackers to track either Odric, or the Black Necklace. Belo either was working for Minax to get the Black Necklace back, or to get it for himself.
It was Odric who slew Malabelle, leading the Relentless Trackers there, followed by Belo Ondariva, who was then found by the Royal Guard at the scene.

  • From that article: "It was here she hoped to find either Malabelle or Dupre, perhaps both." Malabelles was working with Dupre, for the realm, not for Odric.
  • Also from that article: "He carried a bloodied spear that bore the name Black Dragon. This fearsome figure, dressed in blood-red armour of a strange origin, identified himself as one Belo Ondariva... a Warlord!" Does this sound like a Crimson Dragon to anyone else?

And then Belo Ondariva disappeared when Odric/Ramuz the Shadowlord did.

Providing that my UOA timestamp is correct, the following journal bits are from 11/18/2004 sometime after 8:00 PM CST, as there was a gathering of some sort beforehand (it's a Thursday, so it wasn't High Council night)... but, Tanda interrupts whatever's going on:

Tanda: Priam is summoning the Royal Guard
Tanda: To the castle

Referring to Priam Balifor.
We arrive in the middle of explanations:

Priam Balifor: We also fought the pirates in their cave..
Priam Balifor: And we found a strange room..
Priam Balifor: Very oddly decorated.
Priam Balifor: It has since been dismantled for further study elsewhere.

There's conversation, and then...

Valider: you have anything for us Priam?
Priam Balifor: Shortly. We await Odric.

Some more waiting, then...

Priam Balifor: Well, to give you a bit of news before Odric appears..
Priam Balifor: Ah, I spoke too soon.
Priam Balifor: Here he is.
Odric: Hail, Priam
Priam Balifor: To keep a long story short..
Priam Balifor: Odric approached the Ruling Council a short time ago to offer help contacting Dupre.
Priam Balifor: He sent word that he has made progress, and that we should be prepared..
Doron the Bold: Dupre - A famous paladin hero
Doron the Bold: If my memory serves me correctly.
Priam Balifor: Correct, Doron.
Priam Balifor: Odric, what news?
Odric: I have been able, through my resources, to arrange a meeting...
Odric: with Dupre's contact.
Odric: The meeting has been arranged and will take place shortly.
Priam Balifor: Let us go to the meeting spot then, shall we?
Odric: Aye
Odric: I will open a gate for us to the meeting location.

[During this, some of us assembled are already uneasy, as evidenced by...]
Trilon: i smell a trap
Doron the Bold: I have an odd inkling as well Trilon.

[Back to the story... we arrive...]
Priam Balifor: Very well, we wait here for the contact.
Odric: This is the location. The contact should be here any moment.
Odric: *looks around*
Priam Balifor: *taps his foot*
Priam Balifor: *looks around*
Odric: hmm...
Odric: This is odd...
Priam Balifor: No word from the messenger?
Priam Balifor: No sign around?
Priam Balifor: *frowns*
Odric: No. I was hoping for punctuality.
Odric: Well, a few minutes wait to get word of Dupre is not too much to ask.
You see: Relentless Tracker
Priam Balifor: Eh?
Doron the Bold: Whatever it is, its hostile!

[Battle and corpses ensue like mad...]
Relentless Tracker: * The poison seems to have no effect. *
You see: a balron corpse
[And they eventually die... Note that corpse type only identifies some of the base creature model, and does not mean that the creature in question itself was, fictionally, a balron.]

Priam Balifor: Interesting.
Priam Balifor: Odric, we must try and find this contact of yours.
Priam Balifor: Keeping the name secret will do no good if he is dead.
Odric: *sighs*
Odric: I am beginning to think that you are right, Priam
Odric: Although I do not think it is a good idea to reveal the contacts name....
Odric: Her name is Malabelle.

[Lots of discussion about the contact being Malabelle...]
[Qe eventually go somewhere else... Moonglow perhaps? I can't really tell by the text, but, wherever we go, it's Malabelle's place of stay...]

Odric: The house has been ransacked!!
Odric: Look for a lady named Malabelle

[As we're searching high and low, another Relentless Tracker attack occurs at the building. We all meet back up there.]

Priam Balifor: Odric?
Odric: Priam?
Odric: Did anyone see Malabelle?
Doron the Bold: I checked the Telescope and the Lycaeum - No Sign of her

[Clearly Moonglow... heh]

Priam Balifor: Odric, Malabelle is not here. Where else might she be?
Odric: Priam, this is terrible...

[At this point, some people who don't know who Malabelle is get the short story...]

Ra'Dian Fl'Gith: Malabelle was one o' Minax' henchwomen when Trinsic was under 'er control.

[Then...]

Odric: I think she may have gone to a safe house if she saw trouble
Priam Balifor: Do you know where this safehouse is?
Odric: I... I think I hear mention of some huts...
Odric: Some trapper huts.
Priam Balifor: Let us go there.

[And so we go to the site of Malabelle's final resting place...]

Odric: Let me see if I can open a gate
Priam Balifor: Odric will gate.

[I was a little bit behind the group, so I don't have the full text of Belo's conversation... but... for what it's worth...]

[Atreus Alethinos]: malabelle is dead, and there is a warlord ehre

Belo Ondariva: as I pillage this bloated land!
Belo Ondariva: While you lie in your soft beds, I shall kill you all.
Belo Ondariva: *glares*
Belo Ondariva: This land is populated with soft-bellied lackeys.
Belo Ondariva: I will enslave your families and build my fortress from their bones!
Belo Ondariva: *laughs*
Belo Ondariva: Screeching monkeys! Your loose tongues will wash my boots when I return.

[More relentless trackers...]
Jaque De La Mort: IS THERE NO END TO THESE
[And more and more and more... hehe]
[It ends, and then the wrap up...]

Odric: *sighs*
Ra'Dian Fl'Gith: Is there any 'ope her info might yet be found?
Odric: I do not think so
Odric: And I have no potion that can bring her back.
Ra'Dian Fl'Gith: *frowns*
Odric: I am afraid she is beyond the reach of any spell
Priam Balifor: Odric, let us return.
Ra'Dian Fl'Gith: I am disturbed by the thought o' what she would 'ave to say if she were alive.
Odric: Aye, Priam
Priam Balifor: We can do no more for her now.

[Back at the castle...]

Priam Balifor: Troublesome.
Priam Balifor: It seems that contacting Dupre will be a bit harder than previously envisioned.
Priam Balifor: I believe I heard the name "Belo Ondariva" mentioned..
Odric: Somehow this warlord learned of our meeting. I am sorry, Priam.
Priam Balifor: Quite troublesome.
Priam Balifor: For now, we need to find out another way to reach Dupre..
Priam Balifor: That is all I have for you this eve.. Keep an eye out for any other strange goings on.
Priam Balifor: Good work this eve.

[Event ends, I fill Ren in on a bunch of Malabelle's history, yada yada, RP community goes off by itself to continue both what it was up to before the summons and discussing the events of the evening... The event, by the way, was Tanda's feast, as later evidenced in the log...]

So, in short, you're right, she was Dupre's contact... also had contacted Odric...

Just for clarity's sake though, Belo was at the scene of Malabelle's death when we arrived; we (including Odric) arrived after the fact; the trackers were then summoned in Belo's departure.

As for Minax sealing off Tokuno, I don't remember at the moment the whole history of the Tokunese Isles, and I've got a sentence review to get ready for, so... maybe later... hehe

Here's a another piece of the puzzle.

Though Ramuz had slipped away again, we were understandably ebullient at the liberation of Cove and our steps were a bit lighter as we began to tend to the wounded. Suddenly, Iyona’s voice rose above ours. “I have found something!” she called out. To my surprise, Iyona was rummaging through the gory corpse of the slain beast. “A bag!” she said. “Or, it used to be…” She pulled a bloody, sodden mess out of the beast’s body. I retched, but I don’t think anyone saw me.

“It seems that the contents are not ruined,” Iyona mused, as she wiped the gore from the dark bundle. “A journal!” She gasped. “Malabelle’s journal!” Shocked murmurs rose from the crowd.

“It is written in a strange text I cannot read! It is not in a language of this realm!” Iyona’s frustration was evident. One of the Guard suggested that she show it to Clainin, and Iyona agreed. Wearily, she informed us that she was returning to the Castle and taking Malabelle’s journal with her. She congratulated the Guard on their bravery, and left. Her departure was a bit abrupt, but I and other attributed that to her exhaustion and her frustration at the escape of Ramuz.

I made my way back to my home and set my pen to paper in order that you, my noble Lords and Ladies, should hear of today’s events. Now, I must rest. It is my hope that Clainin will be able to decipher the journal of poor Malabelle and we shall see an end to this mystery.
From: Mythic Entertainment | Ultima Online - Play the 14-Day Free Trial!

So, Malabelle had a journal, written is an unknown language. If it was hers, perhaps she was from some other dimension, like Keeonean was. Or perhaps it wasn't hers at all, but was of great importance none the less. It no doubt had information of great importance to the realm.

It seems likely that a Relentless Tracker killed Malabelle, and took the journal she carried.

Here's my take on the events:

Malabelle is Dupre's contact in Tokuno. He sends her back to Britannia with this journal, which has very important information concerning the dealings in our world/dimension of those from another.

Meanwhile, Odric is working on his own things, and these are at odds with whatever Minax is working on...in the Tokuno Isles. (Odric and Minax are not on the same side (as proven when Odric took the Black Necklace from Minax), and thus Ramuz the Shadowlord is not on Minax's side (because Odric and Ramuz are the same being).
So it's likely that this journal was of great importance also to Odric.
In his efforts, Odric must have used his position gained in the realm of Britannia (no one knew he was a Shadowlord, and he had saved the Captain of the Royal Guard's life) to gain influence with Malabelle, and her trust. Malabelle had been "influenced" wrongly in the past, by Minax.
This is how Odric knew of the safe house location where Malabelle was found dead.

At at the same time, Belo Ondariva comes on the scene and is after Odric (for some reason, the Black Necklace that he now had?), sending the Relentless Trackers on his trail and following after them. Although these Trackers were not all grouped together, like hound dogs some were faster on the trail than others.

So what we have is this (I think):

Dupre gives Malabelle this journal he had discovered, telling her to take it back to Britain.
The Relentless Trackers are on Odric's trail.
Odric hears from Malabelle that she's on the way with this journal, and it's his chance to get it.
Odric calls a meeting with the Royal Guard because he knows the Relentless Trackers on on his trail, and he can use them to take care of the Trackers while he takes the Journal.
Odric had been to the safe house himself, as he was being tracked and on the move, and the reason he was late for the meeting.
The Relentless Trackers follow Odric's scent to the safe house.
Malabelle was at the safe house awaiting the time of her scheduled meeting with Odric and the Royal Guard, when the Relentless Trackers arrive, they kill her, and one takes the journal.
Malabelle doesn't show for her meeting, some of the Relentless Trackers follow Odric's scent there, and they are defeated by the Royal Guard just as Odric counted on. The party goes to her home in Yew and finds a ransacked house. This could have been anyone's doing (Odric, Belo Ondariva, Minax, or anyone else), but Malabelle had not gone there, choosing the safe house instead. More Relentless Trackers follow Odric's scent there, and they too are defeated by the Guard.
Finally, Odric leads the party to the safe house. Here they find Belo Ondariva, who had followed his pets, the Relentless Trackers, here. He was investigating the scene himself. Words are exchanged, Belo leaves because Odric is protected by the Royal Guard at this time. Odric knows that the journal is not there and thus the cause of his concern. Belo Ondariva is not after the journal though, or else he would have retrieved it from his Relentless Tracker that had killed Malabelle, and was still on Odric's trail. The Trackers were never after Malabelle, only Odric.

Later, at another event that soon followed, Odric is revealed as a Shadowlord. One of our Shadowlords, perhaps the first in our individual shards. He flees to Cove where he is followed by a Relentless Tracker, the one that had killed Malabelle and taken the journal. But Odric doesn't know the journal is present. He hides in the mountains, while the Royal Guard arrives because of the disturbance. The Guard defeat the Tracker, and Iowna Condo finds it, and takes it back to Britain (she said, anyways. Note that she has disappeared too).

Odric (Ramuz the Shadowlord) disappears, and along with him so does Belo Ondariva and his Relentless Trackers.....

For now.
