Don't quote me on this, but at one time I am pretty sure the stablemaster would keep taking 30gp every week until your bank box was empty of gold pieces,
even when your account was inactive--they kept checks from the stablemasters so that your accounts characters wouldn't be completely penniless when resubscribing after an extended hiatus away from UO, simply because you left a bunch of pets stabled.
The way I remember it, the stablemaster stopped taking gold from inactive accounts when the Devs made it possible to retrieve a pet from
any stable, regardless of where it was initially stabled--the fact they don't take a check is probably just an overlooked "fix" that is no longer needed.
But then again, maybe it IS still there for a reason--I don't give recurring access to any of my credit/debit cards IRL, why should the stablemaster have such in UO? It doesn't sound prudent.
