I just would like to ask... Are moderators of these forums supposed to read the posts and try to stop people from breaking the rules, for example swearing or being abusive?

Or are they supposed to wade into every discussion in every thread and pour scorn over the people who happen to have a different opinion to them?

Because it is remarkable how many of them are posting on these forums and getting involved in the arguments.

Is that really professional?

I'd like to know if EMs are allowed to post here using alt accounts?

You are like a hyperbole-producing machine from the future.

EMs are players too.
Chances are some of them already have accounts from prior to EMing.

Mods are allowed to have opinions, too. They're even allowed to disagree with people.

They are not paid; they receive no special perks. Rather, they volunteer their time to help answer questions and keep Stratics a pleasant place to visit. I think that they deserve more respect than you afford them.

Well moderators are volunteers so they are not professionals.
:p

Is just stratics does not have that many posters so the moderators stick out a bit more these days.

Sounds like somebody is butthurt, boohoo at other players interacting with you.

As Babble has accurately said, the moderators and admins are volunteers.
They are also UO Players.
By volunteering for Stratics they do not give up the right to have an opinion about the game we all play -and PAY for. Provided they express that opinion without breaking the rules they have volunteered to uphold.

What Stratics mods are not is in receipt of any pay, perks, inside information or anything else they are constantly accused of, from EA.

I am the Managing Editor of the UO section of Stratics. I update the site with information gathered from:
Developers' posts on these boards
Officially released information on UOHerald
Posts made by players on these boards
Emails sent to me by players
My own playing experience
Logging into test center and testing things out for myself.

Some weeks I spend more time in game researching stuff for Stratics than actually playing the game.

Dude, you don't really have a clue, do you? Allow me to explain it for you ...

  1. Mods and Admins are VOLUNTEER STAFF
  2. They are NOT employees of Mythic or EA or Bioware or whatever.
  3. They are players of UO who give to the community of players by donating their time.
  4. They have opinions on the game as a player and may even join a good discussion every so often.
  5. They are allowed to post their opinions as long as the ROC is followed.
  6. They have to monitor a lot of swill that comes through these forums, yet they do it well and usually with a smile.
So get it through your head right now they can post as players as well as staff ... and it is perfectly fine for it to be done.

IBTL ... I see a closed door in the future.

Mods should post their views, but use an alt account, not their mod account.

More importantly, any EM posting using an alt account, should clearly identify themselves as a professional paid directly/indirectly by EA.

What is remarkable to me is how many people post on these forums with the apparent sole purpose of making as many people as possible feel bad about as many things as possible.

"Everything you do sucks!" "Everything the devs have ever done SUCKS!" Those aren't "different opinions" those are trolling.

If all you ever do is pancake, whine and complain, and if you never have anything constructive to offer in your posting, you should clearly be moderated into oblivion, and kudos to the mods for having the courage and the patience to keep doing a thankless (volunteer) job in the face of consistent and incessant carping.

I think the one thing (imo of course) that mods should be aware of, however, is that they constantly carry a 'moderator' tag... therefore, what they say directly impacts the view of stratics' integrity as a whole. Or, in other words, they should probably try to choose their words a bit more carefully than the regular person here.

Which is not to say they shouldn't have an opinion. They should. I've seen, however, certain moderators say nasty comments towards other posters before or make snide remarks... those are the things that give moderators a 'black eye' on stratics. Just be aware you have a tag, and, even as a volunteer, you represent the ideals of your site. And no matter what you volunteer for, this holds true.

The OP has made 50 posts on Stratics in the past 6 years. It is my suspicion that (s)he is uncomfortable with folks disagreeing with her/him. This happens often with new or inexperienced posters.

Many of the folks who have posted above are far from mod fans, lol. I've personally been at odds with several of them at one time or another. Nevertheless, they have been around long enough to know the difference between a personal attack and a difference of opinion--namely, a difference of opinion != "pouring scorn." The OP would learn well from watching them.

My personal view:

I was a forum member long before I became a moderator.

If I did not post, a lot of questions might go unanswered. After 13 years in game, I am happy to share my knowledge, or my data-base links.

Even though I am a moderator, I am still entitled to an opinion.

There are some flame-fest topics that I gladly pass by even though I am tempted to post a comment. Some things are better left alone.

Agreed, and we do try to do that. But we are human, and if you could see some of the drivel and abuse we get in pms you'd understand why our 'human' side gets the better of us sometimes and we are perhaps a little more snippy than we should be.
Having said that, I think we can all agree this thread is going nowhere very useful and needs to end
