Hope everyone had a good holiday.. had a small bash here.

Several years back someone posted here about a book that was written in the Ultima
world.. Anyone remember what is was titled and who wrote it?

I'd also like to mention that the book "Night Watch" by Terry Pratchett is very reminiscent
of Brittannia and the Ultima world. In fact most of his Discworld series reminded me of Ultima. Does anyone else here read? And if so what are you reading now?

And mention, if any, books that made you think of Ultima.

good holiday here - family, fireworks, food and volleyball.

Amazon lists at least two books with titles containing "The Technocrat War", and these are most likely the ones you are are thinking of? I have not read them myself, but i have seen them for next to nothing on ebay. I'll pick them up some day.

Amazon also lists "The Official Book of Ultima", and while not 'in the Ultima world' - i definitely enjoyed it.

What me read?
currently stacked on my desk in the 'to read' pile are - Mad magazine, The Encyclopedia of Arcade Video Games, and the World Television Handbook 2011.

What books make me think of Ultima? - hmmm i guess almost every one i read- D'Oh!

breakfast ABM - cofee, Quisp cereal, and a handful of granola.

I love and adore Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels.
I hold him solely responsible for my warped sense of humor. For My habit of taking things my friends say literally and twisting their words around.

In fact, if I ever have another girl, I may just name her Magrat after one of the Discworld's inhabitants (In the novels her parents were not good spellers) :)

I think "The Technocrat War" might sound familiar.. I'll have to get it and see.

And I do have "Dungeons and Dreamers" around here somewhere.

I knew I wasn't he only reader around here!

I don't know about Statics choices though... sounds kinda dry.

Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series is always a good read.
I think I've read through all the books at least three times.

I lost count how many times I've re read the Discworld books.
There are so many of them that I want to get a Kindle so I can have them all on that and free up a couple shelves at home :)

I prefer having books on shelves. Going to work my way through the Discworld series. Equal Rites next up.

'Technocrat War' was the trilogy for the introduction of "Origin Worlds Online' that didn't happen, it covers the Blackthorn/Exodus/Meer/Juka story, parts of which came in to UO - have a look at this page :

UO Stratics - Austen Andrews

There are also a couple of books from years back by Lynn Abbey, Forge of Virtue and Temper of Wisdom.

As far as I know, that's it for published Ultima based fiction..... but I'd be happy to be proved wrong!

*orders a roast beef and horseradish sandwich and a beer from ABM*

Thanks a lot everyone.. glad to see so many like minds out there.
"The Technocrat War" was the book I was trying to remember...

Now I just gotta find a copy..

BTW I've written several short stories based in Ultima.. Mostly about the adventures(or misadventures) of my guild back when it was big..

I'm a little wary of posting any of them (in case everyone thinks they suck)

But I'll have my kids pick one they think is best and I'll post it some morning soon here at the ABM.

Yep, Aurelius has it down pat. I haven't read Temper of Wisdom but Forge of Virtue was set in Ultima Prime right before Ultima 5. The Technocrat series, meanwhile, is based upon a modified Ultima world and you can probably still find the map online somewhere from the canceled Ultima games. After they were canceled, the Meer and Juka were incorporated into UO and Austen Andrews wrote the fiction for Lord Blackthorn's Revenge. I had purchased online pdf copies of the technocrat series, but now I can't access them for some reason. *grumbles* I just got a paperback copy last week from an Amazon partner, bookoodles, I believe. It was in perfect condition and only cost me $4 with shipping.

Going to work my way through the Discworld series.
If you get a chance to see him in person, take it, unfortunately he has Alzheimer's and nobody knows how much longer he'll be able to make public appearances or write any more books.

There is some Japanese Ultima-based fiction.
Hah - I'd known of the Manga, and then completely forgotten about them! Mind you, having re-read them, I suspect it was my memory protecting me, they are not quite the Ultima world I recognise ;)

Hrumph! This machine needs some attention.

There is definitely something to be said about real books on real shelves. I prefer it myself however, when you reach the point of having more books than shelves it becomes a problem.
My biggest problem is I can't get rid of any books. It may take me a few years or even decades but I end up reading through everything again & again eventually. To get rid of any novels to make room for more would be akin to ripping out the pleasure center of my brain. Too painful.

If I were a rich man, the simple solution of course would be to simply buy a huge, enormous house in which to store them all :D

*Calls GM Tinker to look at ABM*

Well what can I say the ABM is an old machine and I had to pull it out of mothballs.
But we'll get it dialed in.

I have the same problem with books... When I run out of room on my bookshelves, I have to delegate books to boxes.. I've got at least six boxes full of books stashed in the back.
Sometimrs I'll want to re-read something that already got boxed and I have to go find it.. what a mess!

I'm already at the library enough for them all to know my name.. but I have been thinking about a little used book store.. I'm gonna keep my eyes open for one and maybe donate some boxes so other people can maybe enjoy them as much as I did.
