Playing UO on modren systems?

I was a long time player of UO in the past (from the beta onward) and am thinking of comming back. The problem is how UOs client is specificly designd for ancient systems.

So my question is, is UO still limited to a play area of 800*600 with a none scalable interface? Can UO run on a x64 OS without a emulator?

If the resolution is still so low how would you guys recommend I play the game? I currently run 27" LED LCD screens on my computers with a resolution of 2560*1440 they will not scale back to a 90's resolution without totaly screwing up the picture. Should I get a second system from a pawn shop with a old CRT just to run UO on?

How do you guys do it?

You'll have a large black area (which I personally like, plenty of room for icons, packs, paperdolls etc) but UO will run fine on a modern system aside from that.

There is the EC which has a scalable play window, and an excellent UI (when using some player made UIs anyway) but the graphics are truly atrocious.

By "large black area" I assume you mean UO runs at 800*600. This is not acceptable on a screen like mine as it makes uo a tiny dot on the screen that I cannot see. You need to give me more information about your screen type and resalution for me to understand how you play it.

If 800x600 is a problem for you, then you need to use the EC - head to the EC forum, grab Pinco's UI and don't look back. The EC will do 2560x1440.

Also check this thread for improving the graphics when zooming in and out.
