Player Density

Hello, I mostly played UO in 2001 and earlier. I once came back (in 2007 I think) and was shocked - not one soul at the West Britain Bank - Trammel or Felucca. I was told Luna was the new hotspot, so went there and found 4 people... Back in the day I would have expected to find 4 people in someplace obscure like the hedge maze or the shrine of Humility, not the "hotspot." I'm thinking about trying the game again, but it was terribly depressing finding no one where you used to have to wade through crowds. Was there someplace else I should have looked? Is SA likely to concentrate people so there are actual crowds, apart from pre-planned gatherings?

Since you originally left, several new landmasses have been added spreading out the player-base. In addition, the ability to transfer from one shard to another has slowly changed the landscape further.

If you are looking for population, then your best bet is to try Atlantic, or maybe Lake Superior or Great Lakes (Europa if you are overseas) since these seem to have the biggest population.

Right now, go to the locations where the Shadowlords spawn. You'll find a good density of players there right now. ;)

A followup two years on:

Whereas last time, I found almost noone, I saw some people this time. The New Haven bank didn't have a lot of loiterers, but there was considerable activity of people coming and going. There were a few people in West Britain. Luna was fairly packed, but eerily no one was talking. I'm guessing global chat has come to dominate, but it felt unsettling for so many people to be gathered and none of them spamming their wares for sale or flaming each other. I expected Magincia to be a new hub with all the houses and stalls near a bank, but while I saw lots and lots of vendors, there were no people. On the Felucca side, no one had even bothered to rent a single stall. There were people PvPing at the Yew gate, but there was not a soul in Yew or the Abbey. There are pumpkins spawning where my guild tower used to be.

Overall, not as vital as the UO of my memories, but it looked alive, which it didn't two years ago.

I use to play in the time when you had to take turns to be able to kill an earth elemental in Shame. Not that i wouldn't like to see the player base extended (more players -> more money -> more development) but, you know, having some free space it is not that bad.
