Still new to WoW, wondered if anyone could give me some advice please on 'pets' to help my combat ability.

I can't figure out the bit in the manual. I'm Tauran, if that helps.

I only have a basic understanding of Hunter pets as Hunter is not a class I liked much.

As I understand it Cat type pets are fast high damage for PvP, Turttles and Bears are tanks for PvE, and Boar type pets are a mix of damage and tanking.

All pets of a type are basicly the same such as a level 10 cat in a low level zone is the same as a level 60 cat in a high level zone once tamed but there are a few rare pets that are better than others of their type. The Rake found just north of Elder Rise in Thunder Bluff is said to be the best PvP cat.

In the stickies up here you find more info about pets. I have to dig in my memory, but you have mainly pets that either do high damage like cats or pets that have high armor (more the tanking kind of pets). Most people end up with a cate but when you're low level try some other pets, it's fun to find out their differences and train a few more. You can have up to 3 pets at the same time.

It will depend on what you want to do. If you want a tank that is almost totally defensive so you can stand back and shoot, then you would do well with a turtle. If you want a high damage, fast hitting thing, you'll want a kitty (The Rake or Juvenile Snow leopards have high attack speeds)... There are a ton of combinations.

Things to watch out for are:
What the pet eats, cause if it's too much of a pain, then it can often not be worth it over all.
Area effect spells (especially in raids/groups) cause you'll pull aggro (on non-aggro'd things) and wipe the whole party.


So what kinda hunter will you want to be, and what kinda pet would you like?

I've actually started a new character, a dwarf hunter, on a different server (can't run Alliance and Horde on the same server apparently) and I got up to level 6 last night with a bit of grinding and questing, so it's still a long way to go until I get a pet but it's rather fun playing "the other side" - and, of course, when I get to the point of being able to go raiding Horde territory (or Alliance, on my other character on the other server) then I know where places are!

Strange, I have no problem with my 4/4 horde/alliance split.

Ahh, that explains why I wouldn't know. I haven't messed with a PvP server yet, heh.

Your best bet would be to experiment with the various pets.

When I first started my hunter, I couldn't decide what pet to get either. I saw alot of people back then, that had a raptor, so I decided to try one out. I hated it. Frankly, I tamed a cat in Stonetalon mountain, and I have had it ever since.

There are some pets that are a bit stronger and do more damage, depending on what you want it for, then you have the strength of the turtle, and alot of people like that it takes forever to kill one. But the bottom line is only you will know which pet you like best just by trying several out.

Ummmm....do you mean how do you TAME one?

At level 10 you do a taming quest and the quest giver gives you a taming rod and tells you to tame various pets and go back to her. When you complete the quest you get the ability to tame pets. Just click the taming icon when you have a pet selected and it starts taming it. The pet doesn't like to be tamed, so it does attack you. If you survive it (I usually use my freeze trap to tame), the pet will be tamed and you should immediately feed it. After that you can use it.

Is that what you were looking for? If not, please explain.

To add to Dramora's post, after you complete the quest to return varios tamed animals, you get another quest to go see the Hunter Trainer in a major city (the quest will tell you which one) Make SURE you do this extra quest...you will get ability to resurrect, feed, and train your pet from this trainer. I think the first person only gives you the ability to tame, call, and dismiss the pet. If you can't feed it...it won't be any help to ya

Ok having now hit level 10, all the above came blindingly obvious... sorry


Have now got through the training bits, I'm off to find me a pet... pity you can't tame critters, I quite fancy a killer ****roach.
