Pet colors?

A while back there was discussion about what amounted to basically pet dyes (forget what it was actually called) Thankfully the community was asked prior to them being unleashed into the world. I think the biggest complaint at the time and the reason for it not being put in was cited as the choices of the colors and how they were going to be implemented. I for one wanted what would have seemed like natural colors for the pets. If I remember right some of the colors were just wrong for pets. The main reason though I think was most didn't want just re-hued pets but a rework of the art so that there wasn't any loss of detail in the pet. After the survey the idea was shelved for later reconsideration.

So my question is what ever became of this idea?

I for one would have preferred to see new pets introduced with different resists/abilities according to the color but that's just me.

If they do this they'd have to also make more stable slots open because you would need different pets with different resist/abilities for each type of monster or w.e you wish to put it against...

They still can't color things properly in the EC. Sadly I'd love to see dragons ranging in color from Greens, to browns, Reds, Gold, Blue... and such having different properties and all and of course a beefed up WW.... And what I wouldn't give to have the unicorns spawning in a range of colors like Hiryu and CuSidhe..... But maybe that's just me.

The problem is that whenever the topic of re-colours comes up, the only option seems to be a solid "paint bucket" fill effect that looks pretty terrible because it bleaches out the highlights and shadows and makes it look like the pet was just dipped into a pot of ink. It's like plants - orange poppies are solid orange, including the stem and leaves, rather than just the flowers being orange as would be normal. [Note: I'm talking about the classic client here.] I think this is because all they have to do is change the pet's hue, which colours the entire form. A dragon re-hued to be blue would end up with a blue body, highlights that were light blue, and shadows that were dark blue; this isn't how lighting works, and the result would be plasticky and unappealing. To actually make it look good, with proper contrast and shadow colour, would require individual attention paid to the artwork on every single pet, which would be a huge undertaking.

I'd love to play in a world with bright green, ochre, or even purple dragons, if the re-colours were rendered properly. But I have to be against pet recolouring on principle, because I'd rather have no variation than the re-hued option that leaves all the pets looking like plastic toys.

Times like these I wish EA accepted volunteer work, I'd totally be up for spending my uni holidays recolouring dragons. :(

Well that's basically what I was saying before. the overwhelming majority felt the same way about re hued pets and wanted them to be honestly recolored and not just washed out.

Oh I couldn't agree more I do not want to see them simply dipped and solid colored to me that is just terrible... Once upon a time dying things in the EC was like that... entire chairs, beds, and such all dyed 100% was horrible... and I totally agree about the plants ...... I think it's a 100% cop-out to say that it's too much work since we all know it CAN be done. Solid color changes are to me the difference between Atari and the PS2... this isn't the 1980's anymore... I think we should be able to do MUCH better and I guess I expect more out of EA these days than that. Especially after playing "The Sims Medieval".

Problems with pet dying:

1. As mentioned the hueing issue needs to be worked out so that we don't end up with monochrome messes regardless of client.

2. Unless the color options are SEVERELY limited, people are going to dye their pets garish colors. Since most used pets are big enough as it is, the technicolor puke this would create during events would be... well... you can imagine what it would be like.

I do remember that when the EC was the KR client that plants were correctly partially hued... unfortunately, I was unable to get a good screenshot showing this effect, but it shows that it IS possible.

Exactly. Possible... with care. Trouble comes when there is no care... or time is not enough.

To me it's about care and love. If they (DEV's) truly cared and loved UO we surely would have such things... But to some it's just a job... and sadly they do it without love. Or did. How many are left that put forth the proper amount of care, love and pride.

If I did my job the way many do theirs... I could kill people. But I put care and love and pride into my work. I don't do anything "Half-###"..... Sadly that is not the way everyone works.

What I wouldn't give for half of what I've seen done... Why do you suppose it is that free shards can do such beautiful things but the paid one can not???

I've seen a few really awesome additions to UO over the years... but I've also seen my share of bad ones... Silver Sapplings..... good design.... looks amazing.... but the perspective is still off... and like the Ruined Tapestries it does NOT sit properly in the realm when placed.

And whomever did the dusty pillows.... neat concept only WHY do they block movement????? Can't use them to create a nice sitting spot because you CAN NOT walk thru them... sort of like adding the nice pretty little blue flowers.... can't walk thru those either... WHY?????

And after seeing that chest that is in the water in another post on UHALL... I'm wondering..... Why is this not a new craftable that I can make?????? Because OMG that is good art. Yet it lies hidden from view for some very weird reason...

I would hope that if something like this happened that it wouldn't affect the already colored rare pets by making them well... Not so rare anymore... Otherwise, thats just gonna piss off some owners out there.

I am not a fan of the idea of dying pets. Other things about pets and taming I think need attention before we think about this.

Hubby n I were talking about ideas for the 15th anniv n thought perhaps we could make these pet dyes from staining and just make em temporary colouring like it wears off after a certain amount of time and the colours are just the plant colours we have already, nothing fancy but of course u could make the fire/blaze colour a different shading from the actual blaze coloured cu sidhes, perhaps a paragon hue? Same goes for the other plant colours that clashes with already existing pet colours like the black n white, they'll just be a different shading from the actual ones on pets. This way the real pet colours would still hold their value and me thinks we'll have more use and value on gardening too but that's just me. :p
