Is this an NPC guard gorget or not? Any idea of price? This is on GL.

Way back in the day you used to be able to buy different colored platemail pieces from NPC smiths.

It could also be player made both from the past, and possibly from more recent times. By the looks of it, it appears to be a shadow ore color, and since many ppl have old coal, and in some cases old pre aos un-named ore lying around it could possibly have been crafted from that. Has anyone experimented with crafting with coal or other un-named ore and found that it gains a ore title after the item is made, or if it remains unnamed?

To me, it seems a bit lighter than shadow iron. Since I am dirt poor on this shard, I can't afford to buy a shadow iron gorget to compare, but to my untrained veteran (read: old) eye, it seems lighter.

I have not tried this, but the problem with crafting with Coal Ingots would be that the game would not find any resources to craft your item with. Back in the day you crafted with whatever resource you had in your pack meaing if you had Iron Ingots in your pack whatever y9ou were making was Iron. If you had Val so be it, if you had both it was whichever resource the game found first. Now in the gump you have to select the type of resource be it Iron Dull Verite or Val, no selection for Coal or just plain ingots. Which is why you do not see a lot of Coal suits floating around or Sea Serpent Armor. I myself have enough coal ingots to make a complet GM set, and I have over 600 Sea Serpent scales, but alas I can make neither a Coal suit or a Sea Serpent Scale suit.

Oh and any item crafted now will have what type of resource was used in the item description, can't stop that.

By way of education, I went and took a pic of some of my old stuff. Here it is:

Lossless format.

On the upper right is a regular 'shadow iron platemail gorget' for comparison.

On the middle left is an old npc purchased/coal/whatever 'platemail arms'.

On the middle right is a regular 'shadow iron platemail arms'.

On the lower left is an old npc purchased/coal/whatever 'platemail gloves'.

On the lower right is a regular 'shadow iron platemail gloves'.

The difference is very subtle, you need a good monitor to even see it but the old stuff is a bit lighter in color than shadow iron.

The OP's gorget is the same as my arms/gloves as shown. Probably npc purchased but I looted all that stuff off pk's I killed back then so /shrug.

That's not how I remember it...

I thought you scrolled through the menus, picked your stuff, and then got to target the ingots you wanted to use.

Tinkering was the same way until it got a menu as well...

I thought that was because coal.. or any unofficial ingot color... hadn't been duped to high hell yet.

As for sea serpent armor.. those scales were annoying to get unless you fish a lot. They weren't useful so when people bothered to make them for gains, they usually chucked them.

I stand corrected!! Now that you describe that I remember GMing Smithy and now remember why it was such a pain to do! As far as the Sea Serpent scales...I am a notorious pack rat and well they came with me from Lake Austin to GL with my Red Fisherman.

Oh, I thought you had to target the resource only if you had more than one kind of resource in your backpack. Don't really recall tho.

Sarsmi is correct,if you had more than one type of ingot you got a cursor and had to select what ingot to use.
Even if you had used valorite just before you got a cursor every time you made something

And because of that people had only one type of ingot in backpack mostly.

Lossless screenshot clipping in a white box for educational purposes? TY.

Yes indeed.
Trev made a wonderful essay on how to seperate the new tokunu dyes.
He noticed that the shades was the same as from the old npc colours.
Of some reason that I dont know that thread got lost some time ago.

I have compared coal with the darkest of those shades and coal is still darker.

Not to say I doubt you, but unless you've smelted coal and then used it to craft, can you be sure? According to an earlier post in this thread, it might not be possible to work with coal any longer so unless someone has in the past, or has seen the results of such a process is it possible to tell?

Hi,

if you had seen the chart made by Trev you could be sure.
I have coal ore, coal ingots and two full set of coal armor.

I havent made any armor from coal ingots by myself but I have compared wuth the charts from Trev.

Just for extra info I add that the darkest of the darkest is called true black.
I have seen a true black gorget ingame and its abit darker than coal armor actually.

I would say it is npc armor. It could have been bought directly or maybe it was possible to even use the ingots from smelted npc armor and make new armor.

But the colour should in that case be the same anyway.

I would not trash it if I were you.Pricing I leave for the rare experts to decide.

You have a full suit of that colour?
