I'll address this anyway, I can guess what you were querying, it's the second today.

Passwords are set to expire after 720 days, this weeds out inactive accounts. (We poor staffers have to change ours much more frequently).

This is going to come up a lot in the next few days because of the number of people who had to register for the new vbulletin boards after the crash of the ubb boards back in early 2008.

If anyone meets with any problems with this please email me at [email protected]. It's not unknown for the re-activation email to be dumped in spam and lost.

I got one this morning as well. This shouldn't be necessary for active posters. I've never had a website say "Hey, you, go change your password!". =/

I have - it's a good practice to change them every so often anyway. Work has a 180-cycle and special p/word rules to make things harder for hacks.

Actually, the benefit of having a mandatory password change policy does not benefit an organization in any way. Due to simple logic, if somebody acquires your account information, they aren't going to sit around and wait before hacking you; they're going to do it immediately or shortly after gaining it. You don't normally know you've been hacked until you notice changes in your account(s). At that point in time, you generally attempt to change your account information asap anyways. As Petra addressed, this change will really only benefit unattended stratics accounts.

This policy is to weed out inactive accounts not stop hackers as Petra stated. I was glad to find out that it was a legitimate function of the forums when it happened to me this morning.

I agree, active posting should continuously refresh the timer.

If I post and am active, and if the message is to clear inactive posters, why should I need to change my password if I log in, actively ?

Policy decisions on site-wide settings like this are above my head. Sorry.
