Paragon chest

I have a chest dropped by a Troll paragon.

Can someone give me some idea of lockpicking and remove trap levels I am going to need to open it?

Paragon chests tend to be very hard to open. I dunno for sure if they scale according to what dropped them (I'm pretty sure they don't), but my GM lockpicker usually busts a few picks in the attempt.

No idea on the trap difficulty. I tend to just cast telekinesis on them. If that's not possible... Then I just open 'em at point blank range, let the nearest healer deal with the rest.

Thanks Bomb.

I'm pretty new, so at what level lockpicking should I even start to try and open it?

I would recommend saving paragon chests until you're up to something like 95 skill. Or would it be better to wait until 99.5? Hmm.

(Lockpicking is sadly useless at the lower levels. You can use it to collect wands but that's pretty much it).

Note that the chest is not valuable due to it's contents. The chests come with maps inside, one level higher then what the creature could normally drop; they're the only way to get lvl6 maps (which always lead to a marti), so only those "top level" chests could be considered to hold anything valuable at all.

The other bits of loot consist of a couple of gems, a small amount of gold, and some dodgy magic items. Maybe a wand. The chest itself is more valuable.

That is to say, you're better off asking (perhaps even hiring) another player to open it for you, unless you're seriously considering making a treasure hunting character.

Thanks again Bomb. I guess this is a longer term project then, which kinda dampens the excitement of getting my first ever paragon chest.

O well, it'll still be fun when I finally open it.

Actually, a paragon of any creature gives a chest one level above whatever treasure map is in the normal version's loot. For example an earth elemental normally gives a level 1 treasure map, the chest from a paragon earth is therefore a level 2 and can be opened with 'magic unlock' by a GM or higher mage. If done just that many times on my tamer.
I don't remember whether trolls give level 1 or level 2 maps, I'd have to look it up in the treasure hunter section of uo.stratics, but what you have there is either a level 2 or a level 3 chest.

[edit] looked it up: http://uo.stratics.com/content/basics/treasure.php
Trolls give level 1 maps, you should be able to open the chest with GM magery

UO pro Tip:

Did you know? you can look inside locked containers by placing them inside a pack animal/vendor first, then opening them. This allows you to see the contents.

:D
