Paladin Question

I was fighting a stone elemental in Shame last night. After he went into a rage, I message appeared on the screen: "You are free". At that point I couldn't attack him. I ran away to heal and when I came back, I was able to attack again. Then, the same message and the same result. Any ideas on what this is and why it happened?

I believe the stone eles can stun u, and take u out of combat mode....i get that when fighting them and its a pain

I did some reading early this morning. On another post in the Bard section: "
From Hunter's Guide Greater Earth Elemental
Special Abilities: Frenzied rage, stun from a distance". Now I was right up on this mob. But apparently it can happen from a distance. I'm sure the stone elementals do the same thing.
