you kill the boss at the end. usually you can tell the boss because it has special effects not normal to the other spawn, and is often the main character of the story (often the "villian", but not always) you need to get looting rights from either damage, healing, or damage taken done (pets included) some bosses you can get "looting rights" by skillfully suiciding a naked character with no skills into the boss many times. but more often youll have best luck with an at least somewhat developed character. clickies style drops were done away with a few years ago. EMs also dont randomly hand out items. the drop is totally random if youve gotten looting rights on the boss (many people still miss looting rights depending on the boss scenerio) and will drop in your pack (if your dead when the boss dies, it will appear in your pack after you rez) there will also be a system messege saying you were rewarded and the base item name.
Items will not always populate in your pack upon resurrection, sometimes you'll have to find your corpse to relieve the drop.
