So.

as some of your may know, or may not and will know now.
Im a Paramedic Firefighter, and i live wayyyyyyyyyyyy up in northern canada.

so i was on shift yesturday and it was a very very quiet day.
as there was nothing to do i went home and decided since it was such a nice day out i would try to finish putting siding on my new shed.

now, being a male and full of testosterone, i couldnt just have some small shed, no no.
i had purchases a shed that was the size of a small garage.
and putting siding on it was turning out to be a big job.
so i was taking time out of my buisy day at the fire station to go home and slap up more siding.

well.
there i was.
on top of the ladder (can anyone see where this is going!) and all of a sudden my foot slipped out of the wrung and i had that brief.... oh so brief molment of flying.... of really flying!!! i was looking up at the beautiful blue sky and then i hit the ground.
flat on my back.

owch.
it hurt.
it actually hurt a LOT!

so i stayed there...laying on my back in my back yard for a few minutes.
and i got to thinking.
the pain wasnt really THAT bad.

so i slowlly rolled over and got up.

and what did i do.
i put the ladder back up and went back up it and finished nailing the piece of siding i was putting up before i was so rudelly interupted by gravity!!!!

then i decided to put away all my tools, and restack all the boxes of sideing (heavy buggers) and i went back to the fire station.

about an hour later i was laying on the couch and a call came in, so i went to get up and oh MAN did my back hurt.

I was walking like i had a pole shoved up my south end!
my partner was bugging me about it, saying that i was getting old ect ect ect.
so we went to the call and let me tell ya, my back was really getting uncomfortable.
so much so that i called in another ambulance to take over for me.
it wasnt a hot call anyways.
infact the person ended up not even needing us.

so i called in and took myself off duty and asked my partner to take me home.
and of course, he had to make a big presentation of it, so we went back lights flashing and our horns a blasting.

anyways.
my wife and kids had just gotten home when i arrived and my wife (a nurse, ugghh) said that we should go and get an x-ray just to make sure that i didnt do anything funky.

so off we go to the hospital.
and of course all the nurses and docters are being smart @ss's to me cause i work with them all.
until they took the first x-ray.
then all of a sudden all the laughing stopped.

well, not all, i was still laughing.
then i looked over at the docters face and i got that feeling that i might be in a bit more trouble then i was thinking.

it turns out, i infact broke my back.
T11 compression fracture if you can belive that!

so of course they start grilling me on what all i had done since i fell.
so i tell them how i went back up on the ladder, cleaned up my tools, drove around, layed on the couch, went on a ambulance call, drove home ect ect ect.
and man, did the docter FLIP out.

now, ya have to remember where i live.
i live in a remote community in northern canada.
so its not like i can just catch a 10 minutes car ride and see a specialist.

so im sitting there (laying there actually, cause by now they got me laying on a back board and strapped into it) and im looking at my wife and 2 daughters and i can see my fear mirrored in thier eyes.

and next thing i know my coworkers are walking through the ER door.
not just one or 2.
8 of them!
both pump crews from the hall, and a flight crew.

now.

im not a big fan of flying.
and i dont make any secerets about it.
and i also dont like needles or iv's.
and i dont make any secerets about that.

so what the Doc and the emerg RN did was call for some back up, becuase it seemed it was deemed critical to my life that i be flow out to the city.

and they figured that seeing as i was big and mean looking that they might need some more big and mean looking fellas to hold me down and wrestle me into the plane.

so, after a lot of wrestling and begging (oh how i begged) i found myself strapped into the backboard mentioned above. that unit placed onto a aircraft stretcher (called a #9) and all that strapped onto a normal ambulance stratcher.
22 straps!!!!!
and 10 people bruised and bleeding limping around the ER department.

so there i was.
IV in me, lashed to a back board, being loaded into a helecopter that was gonna fly me to the nearest airport... and im using the term airport VERY loosly, cause i dont think that a few flashlights and a narrow strip of grass really can be considered a airport by any stretch of the imagination!

and now where flying.
and who is my flight paramedic.
the smallest girl ive ever seen in the world.
and not only is she small, shes a smart @ss!!!!

shes saying thing like...."wow, look at those norther lights tonight, they are so nice when your up here at 2000 ft flying"

and of course i cant see anything cause im strapped into that darn board, only thing im seeing for 2.5 hours is this BIG lever above my head that says "in case of emergancy, pull and push lever"

HOW DO YO UPULL AND PUSH A LEVER AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!

AND HOW AM I GONNA DO THIS STRAPPED INTO THIS BACKBOARD!!!!

so.
hours later.
im back in the land of the normal people.
laying on a x-ray table in the big city.

that was my last 24 hours.
looking back, it was really kinda neat.
i got to fly in a jet that was remarkably smooth, and let me tell ya, when your back is broken you feel EVERY bump!
i got to try some morphine for the first time in my life.
ive give gallons of the stuff over the years, but never had any myself.
GOOD STUFF!
i got to have a 22 year old nurse help me go to the bathroom.
now thats love of your job right there!
and if no one here has ever tryed to pee strapped onto a back board laying on your back.... oh man, its neat.
its just not a natural thing to do!
and then have some cute girl try to TALK you through it, hahahahhahaha.

anyways.
i had to share this with someone.
im bored, drugged up, and of course its 2am and no one is awake to talk too.
so im here with my mistress.... my computer.

Dang dude! I know how that feels! It was about 10 or so months ago when I fell 20 ft off a roof and hit concrete. The Doctors said I must of hit right, cause it could of killed anyone and was amazed that I didn't break anything.

Anyways take care and heal up.

My first week on my current job a guy fell off of a ladder, bad thing was he spoke very little english so I couldnt even talk to him very well let alone after he took a 2 story fall and landing on his side. He had to get some stichtes but he was ok. I hate ladders. I think you might too for now on.

im home.

have been for a day and a bit.

just have to plan my trips downstairs to the computer room.
takes a while to get down the stairs.

and then the wife yells at me.

but my laptop on wireless isnt fast enough to play on!!!!!!

thanks for all the nice words guys, but im fine really.
just feels like a REALLY sore back..... and side.
and back side for that matter.

i just thought it was a funny story i should share, hehe.

now i get to go into work and see what exactlly "light duty's" means at a fire hall.
in my dreams its me on the couch eating chocolate bonbon's, but im sure its more along the lines of going to meeting with the medical director to go over new proticals, or doing some continueing education moduals or going to talk to the kids at the schools or something, eck!

HA!!! yeah, right! By now, you should be realizing that "light duty" means "scrubbing the toilets and scraping up that unidentifiable sticky stuff that no one wants to look at under the door handle".

I'm very glad to hear that you are back so quickly to these "fun" activities though. Just goes to show that, as all Sonoma knows, Poo is really indestructible.(no matter who and how much they try to destroy) hehe

Good luck on the recovery, and feel much better very soon. Sending you some healing thoughts (not to be mistaken for dirty thoughts, I know how you are!)

Poo, you are the third firefighter I know who's injured himself falling off a d*mn ladder whilst doing home repairs! Both also had compression fractures to the spine.

One was impatient & pushed himself beyond what his docs & physios recommended. The other one took it slow & steady keeping the long range goal firmly in mind. Guess which of the two is back on the active duty rota? Yuh huh, Mr Slow Poke.

Sosaria's not going anywhere (well, for at least a year anyway!). Heal slow & heal right , friend, Poo. Shout if there's anything I can do in-game to help out.

Best healing thoughts & wishes to you & your family, Poo.

Glad to hear yer back up and about.

Years ago, I was in a bad MC accident and was scraped off the pavement by a EMT who happened to be an aquantance of mine. Some time after that, I met my wife, and we discovered that the EMT was one of her best friends from HS. About a year later, the EMT died in a rock climbing accident.

Just thought I would add to the 'EMT's hurt doing things they are trained to do' file.

i was outside today enjoying a nice sunny afternoon with my wife and daughters.

i was standing on my driveway washing off the road dust that collects there with my garden hose when my boss.... not the Chief... my BOSS, the Head Of Emergency Services, who happens to live 2 houses down was out mowing his lawn.

he walked on over and asked how i was feeling.
and of course ive been milking this back injury all week.
i hanvt left the couch or my Den Chair in 7 days!
i told him i was feeling pretty damn good, well on the road to recovery!

and he said to me.
"well if you can spray a garden hose, you can spray a fire hose, am i right!"

is it wrong that i wanted to listen to his primal scream as i drag him along behind me through a house fire, wrong that i want to see him get sprayed accorss the face with a arterial gusher of blood from a car accident pt, wrong that i want him to tackle a drunk driver trying to run away from us.

i just smiled.

"im right as rain, but you know them docters, can never get them to send ya back to work early with a back injury, so i guess ill just have to carry my cross through this week and see what he says when i see him next week at my schedualed meeting with him"

then of course i had to make a show of placing a bracing hand on my back when i was done washing off the driveway.

come to think of it i didnt even take holidays this year!!!!!
im thinking that 2 weeks of holidays may very well be in order when im dont this sick leave im on!

hehehehe

Get well and milk that injury

Don't think you will hear from him on here again, stratics decided that after all he has contributed to the community over the years that he should take a "vacation" from stratics apparently.

Isnt that just typical... Destroy what little is left...

He who has entertained us with stories that leave you with a sore belly from laughing for YEARS and yet they leave the sorry ass little punks who contribute nothing but crap, break the rules repeatedly, start constant BS drama on a daily basis...
