Popped a rib, made an audible pop noise, and was painful but not bad enough I couldn't stand and I can breath pretty well. I don't think it is bad enough that a chiropractor needs to see it, and I was told doctors couldn't do much, but does heat help these kinds of injuries?

Its been awhile but as I remember from triage...

The most common is a broken rib. You can tell this by severe brusing and or direct pain on the point of impact.

So being that your a fit guy, start feeling along each rib, and you can generally find the spot in question, inflammation can be a good sign.

Your sternum can also make noises like that but that usually means a severe fracture and youd know it.

In any event, take it easy, really easy. Fractures ribs can sometimes splinter when you continue the same actions over and over (MMA?)

Ibuprofen and heat wraps for pain and to reduce swelling, not cold packs. The jury is probably still out as for cold vs heat.

The most iv ever seen is a chest wrap for multple fractures, otherwise there is little they will do. Luckily your rib cage holds itself together pretty well.

Hope that helps

I'm no nurse but I would still go have it looked at. Pretty serious area... It could start off small and then turn into something a lot worse.

I have a big fight Oct 17, can't really stop training. Anyone know if cardio is still alright?

Hamlet would probably say:

"Get thee to a medical facility and have it looked at."

If you have those convenient walk-in clinics in your area, and can avoid the ER, that would be a good option. Many of those have their own x-ray facilities on the premises and they can get you diagnosed quickly.

If it is just dislocated, a physical therapist should be able to help you manage it with simple manipulation exercises, and ice therapy for inflammation.

Time factor is important - for dislocations, the longer you go without it being manipulated, the more time the surrounding tissue has to react and set up resistance.

My mother recently had some back issues and she went to some physiotherapist. They said that heat feels good at the time but does nothing to reduce any swelling, and starts hurting again shortly after the heat is taken away. Cold reduces the swelling and has longer lasting effects. Take that third-hand knowledge for what it's worth.

So, short answer, do whatever you want. If you've got something that you need to be in tip top shape for in under a month, I'd say get it checked out. Either that, or pick yourself up some PCP so that it doesn't bother you.

Also, this thread's title was VERY misleading.

For shame.

Horrible idea. My father is a Physical Therapist and my Mother was an ER Room nurse for 20+ years, which makes me not even qualified to give you some 2nd hand advice, but I'm going to do so anyways. :)

Best thing you can do is get it looked it before continuing any activity. Last thing you want is to take a shot during your fight and have a cracked rib turn into a broken rib and puncture a lung. You'll be missing WAY more fights than this one if that happens.

But I would most likely get used to the idea that you may want to postpone the October fight as that's what they very well may tell you if you get it checked out.

The last time I broke ribs I nailed 6 of them in one shot. They put me in a realy tight girdle like thing for about six weeks. And I got to tell ya breaking 6 ribs all at once hurt like Hell couldn't breath, blink, sit up, lay down, pee ect.......with it just killing me. So you might want to go have the looked at. And as far as a fight one good shot to that area and you could be in for a real hurt.

As long as you remember crane stance you should be ok, but a broken rib could really mess with your training by making it hurt when you wax off.
