Starting today, Rite-Aid drug stores will be carrying a new kind of prepaid game card, called the ONE Power-Up Game Card.
For those of you unfamiliar with the concept of prepaid game cards,
check your local corner store (7-11, Rite-Aid, CVS, etc.) and you'll
likely see stacks of them. Pick one up in cash, and you can redeem the
card on that game's site and play without using a credit card. The
concept is great for those without credit cards like minors, or those
who are worried about credit card security. But one of the downsides
for most prepaid cards is that they are limited to a single developer
and are one-shot deals.
Enter the ONE Power-Up Game Card. The card lets you load funds and
spend them on microtransactions in more than 20 games, including
Atlantica Online. In addition, the card also gives users access to a
number of special offers - such as GamesCampus.com
offering ONE card users a 10% bonus on all purchases, beta launches,
promotions and exclusive items. It is the first prepaid card to give
access to multiple games in one currency.
The obvious downside is that most of the games are Korean-style MMOs
or anime-inspired sports games and shooters. There's a lot of
diversity, but not much there for someone who isn't interested in
KMMOs. But for those who DO prefer that style of game, the card has
some significant benefits. For one, the card provides added value, from
extra points to unique in-game bonus items, when you use the card.
Combined with cross-platform microtransactions, this can be very
attractive for customers who play more than one of these games.
In short, the ONE Power-Up Game Card has something of a limited
audience -- broader than a single-game prepaid card, but limited by the
type of games offered. For those within that audience, however, it's a
good value and a secure, accessible method of payment for those games.
