Old UO Vet, thinking bout returning...

I have left and come back to UO, oh, quite a few times over now. The last time was due to a bad relationship break up, which a year or so later I felt was dumb. Things worked out, but, I still miss UO. I play Star Trek Online (lifetime, sorta regret it), and WoW, which i plan to continue to play.

I tried Darkfall, which was sorta UO, but, not what I wanted. I enjoyed making a house, doing what I wanted, etc. A ton. I am thinking about coming back. But, the question on my mind is: Does UO still have steam in it to keep pushing on? I know an expansion back came out or is about to. I don't want to re-invest when it could be on it's last limbs. Are servers being merged? Or cities empty?

I am looking to start over. Probably a tamer with the cool rune beetle. Had it briefly before I quit last time.

FYI, used to be a stratics news person here. Long time ago, different name. So yeah, was heavily into it.

I actually do think that UO still has steam... I also tend to come and go, mostly due to my RL schedule, but it always feels like home when I log back in.

I'm not sure about the other shards, but Atlantic seems to have plenty of people on usually. They just don't sit at WBB anymore.

Imo just do it.

UO is fun at killing time when i get bored of it i just do other things till i want to play again.

for me UO is a time filler, hence the reason i still play!

I came back months ago and, personally, I am enjoying it.

New skills, new monsters, new lands, new friends new styles of playing UO.

I do not find the game perfect and see lots of improvement room for things to better but I am overall enjoying it and plan of keeping paying my subscription for months to come.

If you decide on returning, just pick your server according to your playing style and likes because servers are kinda different now. Some are more populated than others and some more heavily into PvP than others.

Unless you pick or want to play Siege Perilous or Muegen which are barred from transfers, there is always transfer tokens though so, if you change up your mind about a server after playing there a while, you can always transfer to another shard later on.

If you want to know what's going on in UO, you might want to visit the website in my signature. To my opinion, UO is far from dying. On the contrary, the developers have brought LOTS of improvements to the game, especially during the past 2 years. You probably will have to learn a lot of new things.

Not quite sure what to say, I returned recently after half a year or so(?) and I plan to stay for some time. After I took in all the imbuing and Abyss stuffz I ended up with the typical UO experience. Pretty much the only real change has been improving my suit.

I guess I am only staying to check out PVP in the new Factions system with my items set the way I want them precisely after so many years, and maybe building a new house and finding or replacing what was in my previous one(last time I quit I didn't even care to refresh the thing).

Mostly I want to see what is going to happen with cheating and I do know it would have been easier and cheaper if I just lurked Stratics and waited to see, if that was only for that purpose. Then again there are 1-2 old friends I got re-united with.

So, point is, if you have NO similar motives or don't think them a good reason to pay EA/M.. And if you mostly like PVP, there is no point playing again IMHO. At least for this and most likely the next month too.

I guess the PVM content could keep you busy in all fairness. It's all subjective but I hope it'll help you decide. In the end, 14Euro isn't THAT much. About 3 beers at a club, where I live, no loss.

When you ask a question like that in the op, you always attract trolls. It's as inevitable as the Santa Anna winds. Honestly, the game is a blast. There is so much more to do in UO than any other MMO I have ever played, and no matter what anyone tells you, pvp is still a lot of fun.

Of course the game isn't perfect, nothing is, but there are still lots of terrific people in the game, and I see vets coming back every day. I've played a number of other MMO's and UO is the one I always come back to.

And I'm disappointed in Morgana. I understand that a classic shard is her cause celebre, but to actively discourage other people from coming back to the game relegates her to troll status. I expected more from her...

Gotta love tag team trolling. A highly typical, predictable, often used, and sometimes successful troll tactic used by clever trolls, or trolls that think they are clever... It goes like this.

But I still watch the stratics boards cause I am not sure if I will come back again, and maybe quit again cause I don;t know if I like the game or hate the game and might try it again to see if i like it, but I probably won;t so i will quit again, but still watch the boards to see if maybe I might like to try it again.......

A lot of old vets just pop by every so often.. i have followed stratics maybe a good 10 years... i tink ahha... prolly a little bit less 8-9 yrs... and i always to in hope a classic shard pops up ahhaa.... i did try UO again in 2007... but then i quit in 2009 when well seemed like the game was dying... but i will keep following on that tiny hope a Classic Shard does appear hahaha =D then BOOM im back into uo =D.. if not then... have to try one of those... dodgy servers lol...

I think the clues are in the OP, of the sort of gameplay they lean towards, in which case, they may enjoy current UO, so long as they choose a well populated shard. I don't see the point in dissuading someone from doing so.

There's still strong communities within all the shards and some great players. Of course there's still plenty of muppets around, but when hasn't there been.

My own issues aren't with the current players, or the communities which remain, but with the direction the game headed in a long time ago. It doesn't match what I enjoyed about UO of old, it's moved further and further away from the simplicity of that era, which is why I eventually left a week or so ago. The style of gameplay and (in my opinion), item dependancy, just doesn't suit me personally.

This is why I will not return unless there's a "classic" option made available, which I also hope, doesn't detract too much from the player base of the other servers, but rather it helps bring back like-minded players who also "miss UO" as it used to, or could have been.

I don't see the point of all the animosity between those for or against the "classic" option. If that's what things have come to at this stage in the lifespan of UO as an online "community", then I doubt I'll ever be back at all. It's the interaction with that larger community which I certainly miss the most. Not the bickering festivals that seem to hold sway now.

I'm pretty sure we all understand the fear and uncertainty some have in regards to actual numbers of people interested in playing a classic server for a sustained period. Attempting to derail others from playing UO in it's current form only makes sense from that viewpoint.

This really is a personal choice, but what do you have to lose if you come back and try things out? Give it a shot ... try both clients and see how you feel after a couple weeks, or a month.

Nope not enough steam right now. Just mindless quests. Fun here and there. But for actual game play. Its the same when you left. Little challenge, once you develop.

If you come back... do yourself a favor and give the new client a try.
It will bring you lots of the nice features you know from the other games aswell as give you that good old UO feel.... I have been using it since I returned and I havnt felt the need to load the old client even once.
