Old school in a New world

Hello community, I am a long time player of Ultima Online. I played from 1999 to about 2004... I remember playing VERY actively up until the time that Age of Shadows had come out and had time to set in. After taking a long break from MMOs all together, I picked up World of Warcraft and have been playing for going on 2 years now.

I enjoy the game very much but feel there is something lacking, too much of the game feels sectioned and requires you to be "This High" to ride the ride. The PVP is enjoyable, but it is FAR too gear reliant; which isn't the problem, it's the time sink required to attain piece after piece of your set. With my current job putting me in the Gulf of Mexico for 2 weeks at a time, I find myself falling behind all of my In-Game and Real-Life friends eating their dust.

I miss the feeling of logging on to UO and asking myself "What do I want to do today". The PVP was superb and the hunting in dungeons was just an amazing experience, and the game did reward you for time well spent, however it wasn't the only way to get a full experience from the game. I play a lot when I'm home, but with the way WOW plays I feel like I'm missing too much.

I have been thinking of returning to UO again to join my last RL friend that still plays, however he plays on Lake Superior. I was thinking of convincing him to roll a character on Siege to play with me because the Shards rule set has always had my eye. I enjoyed old UO, thoroughly. But I've always wondered, does Siege get all the in game events that normal Production Shards do? And speaking of production shards, how is the economy on such if I cannot get my friend to reroll? How is it in comparison to Sieges economy?

One thing I did enjoy in WOW was my first journey into a dungeon as a group, I understand this is how Dungeon Doom is? Sort of like a Raided dungeon? It's neat to go in with a group of people and Slaughter everything in sight. It just sucked to see it done and piles of gold lay on the ground cause everything was so jacked. But in any case, how are things these days? Are they as good as I remembered, or dare I say better? Would I enjoy coming back to this old gem instead of sticking around for the shiny graphics Blizzard wants to bombard me with in the next expansion?

Thanks for listening to my thoughts and any input would be appreciated. I'm sorry my thoughts seem jumbled and at times not very organized, but I am far from good at organizing what I have to say.

Hey,
im a long time player just came back after a break. I left again already.
the game has some fun stuff bout it still, but its been ruined on account of super dragons, and ****** bags.
you can always give it a try. but id wait till they fix the pvm going on during the pvp. which did go on in the old days, (nothin like having 4 dragons at once), but these new pets leave no room for fun. just plan on alot of stealthers dismounting you, then pets all over you.

the month i came back for i think i got like 2 or 3 good fights.

id see if you can get a trial or somthing. good luck!

Everyone does something gay here. TO will fight with huge numbers, TnT will sit in a house like pudds, KoC won't fight on reds anymore. UO is a game filled with flaws. I was just at the bank and forgot I was poly'd and got KoC ganked, but I'm not pancakes, it's game mechanics. Make a tamer of your own.

no one wants to actively pvp it seems.

the funny part is, the last fight night, to only showed up on stealthers trying to loot some of the duelists. but hey, i guess you really want to pvp and duel people ;P

Difficult questions to answer. I have known old-school players come back and not like things at all, whilst others have enjoyed it and carried on. Opinions will differ widely on the state of Siege, and certainly it is not like it was a few years ago (from what I am told) and the UO population has fallen across the board. It is definitely more item based these days and 1v1 a person with high-end kit will beat someone without, but as most PvP tends to happen on a group basis, everyone can contribute.

As has been suggested, the best thing to do is to just start a trial account and give it a test. Better still, if you know your old account details then re-activate that.

As for Siege vs normal shards, the Siege population is definitely lower than some of the main normal shards (e.g. Atlantic, Pacific), but Siege retains a viable economy. Crafted armour still sells here and a few hundred thousand gold can still buy you decent equipment. I would not want to play UO - or start anyway - on a normal server, but then all Siege players would say that.

But I don't think you are ever going to answer your questions fully without just giving it a trial.

Doom is fun, especially when you see a group going in and then raid them an hour later!

You're pretty much right, the only way I'll be able to get a good idea is to dive in myself. I'll repost here in a few weeks when I get back home if I give it a shot and hopefully I'll see you guys around.

acually i didnt "dodge" the filter. its working just fine. and if me not having fun in the game means i have a "stick up my ass" (how did ass get by the filter) well sir you are sadly mistaken.

geeeze, way to scare people away! :twak:
I used to roam the Thief forums so I'm used to the off topicness, I've been reading up on old Siege posts and I enjoy the community interaction; good or bad. I'm just hopeful I can find a good balance between PVP and PVM, and from what I understand there are guilds that dabble in both so I'm hoping for the best.

I personally feel the game has declined even further in the last 2 years in terms of variety of activities (new content has made old content obsolete without adding much in the way of variety or fun while bugs, cheating, & exploits continue to abound), but as Hoffs says, really you will need to try it and make the conclusion yourself if you enjoy it or not.

Since you have a WoW perspective now, about the only thing similar to WoW's instanced dungeons in UO is they added some areas in UO with Mondain's Legacy, called Peerless. They are basically a few specials areas containing a superboss, and to access that area you have to collect keys of sorts, and only your party with the keys is allowed in that instance to fight the boss. The entrances to the peerless areas have certain requirements but once in, they are not instanced. Players can interact, and interfere with each other until they are teleported to the boss instance.

The only thing I ever did in Doom was explore as a ghost and kill stuff for daemon bones in the entrance with a friend. You turn in 1,000 daemon bones for a skull to the NPC lady by the scale in the entrance, she summons a mean skeleton, you kill it, and loot a gold skull. You go ring the bell of the dead, to summon the ferry, and your skull is payment to let you take the ferry to the Gauntlet.

The way I understand it, from second hand info, Doom itself isn't instanced in the sense of WoW dungeons, but when you get in the Gauntlet and actually enter one of the special rooms, the door locks behind you and you can't get out unless you kill the monsters in there or die. The monster type in the last room is the Dark Father. They tweaked the loot drops in the dungeon a while back to make it easier to get artifacts from monster bashing.

Other than that, Doom is mostly for high level thieves to steal artifacts as they spawn in certain locations.

If that is something that interests you, there are plenty of players very familiar with Doom who would give you a live tour I'm sure, and they added a new player tour to the new char creation that lets you take a look at Doom from safety (but not interact of course).

If you like crafting and/or running vendors, I suspect you will become discouraged with those activities for the most part anywhere but on Siege.

One nice thing that was added to Siege is that everyone is allowed to bless 1 item through a context menu on their character. There is still no insurance.

If you are the game lore type, there has been an event arc going on for the last couple of years centering around blackrock, and a mysterious invasion, but it starts and stalls and really, seems to leave most players behind in terms of involvement within the game other than a frenzy of monster bashing whenever they crank up a new segment of it.

You should try to convince your friend to start with you. A few reasons why-

1) The economy is still good here.

2) We do not have the problems with duped gold and items, like the prodo shards.

3) There is a guild, NEW, that will help you get started here. They will give you some basic supplies and equipment.

4) Siege is the best!! :danceb:

Real Life isnt perfect...and a game should be? just my 2 cents...I just try and make the best of whats available...wether in real life of in the game. Its what you make of it! I thuroughly enjoy siege...and wouldnt be upset one bit if they didnt change anything...ROT could use a small massage...i think anything would help on that end...maybe a little more max points per day would be enough for me...instead of the 2.5 or 3 or what ever it is....mayeb the could increase it by 2 points or sumpn...make it an even 5 per day. i never really pay too much attention to that...i just play the game and the skills come...yes it sucks in teh beginning get killed by just about anyone...but the again i enjoy pvm as much as or more than pvp...because in pvp...i end up dieng 90% of the time cuz it usually quickly turns out im out numberd...i think the worst thing that happend is VENT... if someone needs help in a fight...try and type help on guild chat...and tell em where yah are while in a fight....if u try that ur probably dead....VENT i think has created teh gank squads...anyway...even when i get ganked i still take away the satisfaction ..dude neeeded help to kill me.... and i really enjoy the encounters where it stays 1vs1....win lose or draw...thats fun...more times than not...they will res yah...and you can talk to the guy who beat you....and sometimes they will offer advice to help yah get better...
cheers to those of you who are honorable fighterss!!!
