He had a list of the words you couldn't say on television, which, by coincidence, I can't post here

But does anyone else think it's really odd, that because UO has a T rating, we can't cut up corpses nor collect heads...
But I routinely hear those words and more in general chat everytime I log on?

Well, the seven words are based on FCC ruling which covers broadcast media. Any media over a wired connection or satellite are not specifically covered by this. However most non-premium cable channels tend to abide by this anyway.

It does get a bit disconcerting watching BBC America (Top Gear and Gordon Ramsay) hearing certain terms being used with no problem and others being bleeped out (oddly enough with Top Gear they even pixellate the person saying it whereas with Gordon you generally don't need any hint what he said).

As for UO, it's generally a matter of lack of policing the chat channels, most likely due to lack of needed GM and CS staff.

Also you'll note on all online games where the rating tag is, it will say "Online content not rated" because the company has little control over the online content the way they do what's native to the program.

actually all games rated by the ESRB that are online capable say in small writing "ESRB Notice: Game Experience May Change During Online Play".

Cutting up corpses would be a feature put directly into the game by the designers. It would be there no matter who was online. It would be there if you were the only one playing. Thus, it can be rated. Same with any language the developers program into the game, such as NPC speak.

But the swear words depend upon who is playing, thus the "game experience may change during online play" notice.

EA/Mythic did their part... the rest is up to us. That's why the have the teen rating with a disclaimer that says "Game experience may change during online play".

Create a good ignore list of those with no control. The one sided conversation from those dealing with the listed makes for great amusement. The bonus is you wont line that players pockets with gold on sales over chat. Or improve their gameplay by selling them something they need.

Why is it that we can not do this in game but the game can do it? How many times have you found body parts as part of the loot? Strange that Cal said because of the rating that we can't but the game can. UMMMM

The corpse cutting led to people jerky... When UO crossed the pond with local servers, it had to abide by the EU cannibalism laws.

To be honest, the 7 words on Carlin's list aren't even very shocking anymore. Watching Ramsay on BBCA is hilarious due to the sheer number of F-bombs that man can drop in a short space of time.

None of the 7 words bother me by themselves, how they are used makes all the difference.

As has been said, the ESRB can't rate player interaction stuff like this.. I could go onto Hello Kitty Online or Club Penguin and bypass language filters to spam the N word over and over, doesn't mean the game should get a T or M rating though.
