Was it Monty Python or History of the World?

Either way... comically speaking what if UO went to, instead of an item based game or sandbox game, to a Nothing based game.

With all the complaints here about gold, events, items, having to actually do things... maybe UO could get a Nothing Booster pack.

We log into nothing, we do nothing, we can only have a sense of community in our nothingness.

We can talk and comment and propose how to do nothing.

If we begin to do something, then we get guard whacked.

I figure this way Vets and Newbs are on even ground. The economy is flat lined. So thats level. There are no purchases or need to craft. Everyone at every moment is equal in the Nothingness.

Anyone with me!

Yes, it was a Mel Brooks film.

Babble: IRC = Internet Relay Chat.. Chat rooms. Before instant messaging took off, they had IRC clients and servers you'd connect to, pick a chat room, and start "talking".

Because people can't character copy yet. It's entirely too difficult to use all those set commands....

And you can't get imbuing ingredients with a give command, so you still have to do something. That can't be right.

It would only be a matter of time before someone notices that an elite few have more nothing than anyone else, and the same old bitter rivalries and whining would ensue. This would, of course, amount to nothing.

Among those elite few, all staunch nothing forum denizens talking about nothing ad nauseam, arguments would roil about which type of nothing is better than others, and why all other types of nothing are a compromise or betrayal of the values of nothing. This would, of course, amount to nothing.

Thereafter, the devs would find new and exciting ways of packaging nothing to appease these vocal few. Yet, try as they might, people will always complain that this is not the nothing they asked for, and there is so much more nothing that needs addressing than the nothing that the devs have targeted. This would, of course, amount to nothing.

And, after all, we would see that nothing has truly changed.

I know you are joking around w/ Seinfeld analogy ;P but I think people throw around the term "sandbox" like it is a good thing too often. For anyone who ever played Second Life, for example, well ... that is a prime example of a true sandbox, in which all content you see can be created by the users. I played it for one day then realized most of it was just porn, haha. No real purpose. Oh, and you could fly for some reason. LOL.

Games without rules are interesting ... and it's fun to play a game where you don't have to follow rules 100% of the time. But when there are no rules, it better be free to play ;P (like Second Life).

"Sandbox" does not mean player created game content. It means a world where players create using game mechanics created for that purpose, such as building a house or a suit of armor, etc. (and that's just one aspect of Sandbox World). There's a subtle difference here.

What SL does is allow players to make game content, and in a true Sandbox this is very bad and hurts the "Sandbox". It allows for players to change the virtual world, rather than building in it, and change the world outside of it's context.

That's not to say that SL isn't a "Sandbox". It's a Sandbox that's not anything, not a medieval world, not a sci-fi world, not anything in particular. It's a world without rules or context, it's a world of Chaos. And that's why most people don't even consider it a game. It's a social medium on the internet, mostly.

So, while SL is a "true Sandbox", it's not the only way to make a "true Sandbox", and it's certainly not much of a game.

So, I think we're in agreement on this, are we not?
