Note in Dungeon Covetous

I asked this in the Roleplay Forum, the Whit Stag Inn, but I'm afraid that I won't get an answer there in days. So I would like to ask here, if I may.

My friends and I were clearing out the 3rd level of Covetous, and we noticed a note that says "3-4-1-5". It's stuck under a throne. Can anyone enlighten us on what this is? Part of a quest?

Thank you and kind regards.

That's been there as long as I can recall.... and I've never known why.

From what I've heard, part of a puzzle that was never implemented way back when UO first came out.

How long have you been playing UO? How long is "as long as I can recall"? Is it fairly new? It's done differently than other quests, the way you get a notice in the lower left corner, first of the note, and then you have to double click under the throne to get another such notice about what it says. Could this be an old EM event? But then, I've never seen them do things this way either.

This is what I've been told also, there was supposed to be a Black Lich involved. I believe that they actually held an event there on the oldest shards, with the Black Lich being played by a GM. I started playing in 1999 and was told that the event took place the year before.

I started just before T2A was released, and it was there then.

I must confess to all of you that I have not been completely forthcoming here.

Sosaria guards her secrets well.

You may never hear from me again. Or, perhaps. One never knows what tomorrow will bring.

It is just a clue, which is not being used now...part of the original quests.
I also, seen switches which do nothing on first level. Also, blue clue books.
etc...
It comes, it is used, it then left behind for wonder-sake.

Isn't it fun thinking of what some of the things you find in the old dungeons were for?! I remember meeting my first Kraken back in 2000 and it killing a group or us in Shame! It was like the worst monster my guild ever came across... or the things unvisited dungeons in Ilsh... oh I miss the old lands!

When I started playing in 99, a friend told me that it was from an old quest or event and wasn't used anymore. The disturbing portrait on the wall of the room on the left before you get to the throne room was evidently also part of that quest.

what i heard about it was that the painting asked you for the number and when you spoke the number the black liche would appear and would drop a true black dye tub. don't know if thats the truth but it is what i heard from a couple of people.

This is true, but that was an event put on by the GMs at the time because there was a lot of call for "things to mean something". And the Covetous levers (switches) and the "3-4-1-5" notes were the biggest thing mentioned.

Notice though, that even with this event, it doesn't change what was the original intent of those levers/switches and numbers. Many levers in Sosaria's dungeons used to summon spawn. It was always thought that these spawn were the only meaning for the levers. But they equally could have been a sort of guard to protect a deeper secret. And so too could have been the Black Liche (now called a Lich, I suppose).

Whether that means anything is highly debatable, and the claim that levers are broken or unfinished are still the most likely. However, I can tell you that discoveries have been made. Changes have been affected. And by specific actions in specific sequence to cause these changes.

While we have not found the complete reason for the levers in Covetous and the meaning of the numbers, we have made some discovery into it. It may still be broken, but there is definitely more than meets the eye. Most definitely. These changes by actions, repeatable and predictable and definitive, prove that.

The secrets we hold have been the result of many years of research. From the very beginning of the First Age. It's not been easy. I won't divulge what's been discovered, at least not yet.

I only post this because the good citizens of Sosaria seem to have lost that feeling that there's more to this world than being rich and having a mansion full of "things". I can't say yet that there definitely is more, hidden well from our eyes, but I can say that there seems to be, and there is at least some stages of "more".

I sincerely thank you all for your time and participation.

Yknow people believe that kind of talk more readily when you just reveal the information rather than talking around it, especially when its something nobody would easily be able to figure out on their own as its taken, by your words, "many years of research". Besides.. if you didn't want to say it you shouldn't have been ready to post about it.. people don't generally give random hints like that unless they really do want to talk about all of it.

I don't want to reveal what's been found because I don't want a bunch of people running around trying it out and thus interfering with my studies. I also am a Roleplayer, and I find it appealing for those purposes. You know, secrets and all.

However, I understand your point.

I might be willing to show you. You alone.

Will you guard this secret under pain of not playing UO for a month if you don't, or death, whichever is worse?

Do you have a stealther of highest ability?

Actually i'm not sure if I have a stealther anymore or not... Guess i'll have to sit it out. :\

I do thank you for the offer though and wish I could take you up on it.. a lot.. :|

I wish you were right. However, having been in UO since the very beginning, I am very sure that most of the secrets in Britannia have no meaning or function at all. You could say, the original designers had lots of great ideas, but unfortunately most of them have never been implemented. The landscape, dungeons and places of Britannia have less depth than it seems. And the few secrets that existed have mostly been destroyed over the years by game patches.
