Not able to unravel

I am a returning player trying to figure out this imbuing stuff. Every skill guide I read shows that you can unravel items to get magical residue however when I try and unravel anything it tells me I do not have enough skill to do so. What do I need to do or make so I can get the residue?

Assuming you have Stygian Abyss expansion, what is your imbuing skill at? You can purchase (train) up to 40 points at the artificer in Ter Mur?

The only time you shouldn't be able to unravel is if
1. You don't have the expansion
2. You don't have the skill points (you should be able to unravel if you have trained skill as above, not sure if you can if you start at 0 as not tried it myself, always started with around 30-40 or whatever the trainer gives)
3. Your backpack is full or you are overweight. It will not unravel in these cases.
4. You are trying to unravel items that are high intensity and your skill isn't high enough. IE you can't unravel stuff that gives Essence until around 50- 60 skill or stuff that will give Relic frags until around 90 skill.

This does help. My skill is at 40.3. Is there a guide that shows what I can unravel? How do I know what a high end item is. I have been trying to unravel shame loot. I have had success with a couple of pieces but hardly anything else.

Most Shame loot is too high in intensity to unravel at your low skill level. Start with lower level junk.
