Noob looking to get into PVP

Hi

I'm a relative noob at UO -- only been playing about seven or eight months -- and would like to get into PVP.

I have a couple of characters that I would like to develop for PVP -- one a Nox Mage and the other a dexxer-swordsman. So far my only experience with PVP has been a couple of trips to Felucca Dungeons where I get killed. Any strategies and advice would be great.

^^^^What he said.^^^^

But to add:

- have LOTS of gold in your bank. If you are truly new, you are gonna die... a lot.
- have patience. As mentioned just a second ago... you are gonna die... a LOT. Just smile and learn from it.
- while equipment helps, it isn't the end all and be all of PvP in a group situation. As long as you have the normal lrc 70s suit, you can be of some use while you learn:thumbsup:
- if you are going to try to join any guilds, best bet is to start learning to play one of the many mage templates. They are more versatile in group combat.

I don't know the complete guild structure here as far as "mild PvP guilds"... I think ZKV is one of them that does a little PvP as a result of champs.

When I got into the PvP scene way back when on Napa, it started as one of the "trammy fel" guilds that got roughed up at champ spawns(basically a zkv equivalent). From there, I "graduated" to a raiding guild(similar to old FL that had more great PvPers than meat shields). From a raiding guild, I then got sucked into a shard raiding guild(FL)

For me its hard to explain how to get started being when I started UO it was tramless, but I would suggest like mentioned have alot of gold saved up not only for insurance but gear. Expect some dill holes to talk smack and act like 12yos just learn to ignore them getting someone angry can have great effects when it comes to macro mashing, being respectful even if you die can go a long way for many reasons. in yew dont attack the reds let them attack you first so they cant run into their houses. Make a red. Make a friend(s) in the pvp community to practice with dueling exc.exc. there are a lot of vets who like to take noobs under their wings and help them get going (but will be based on your attitude when they kill you). create macros and learn those macros. play around in yew its not the greatest pvp but a great place to get timing down and great for practice learn to X-heal its a skill i feel is not being used enough these days and any pvp guild will take excellent x-healers . once your comfortable you can join a pvp guild try champ spawns(guild play, teamwork, xheal).

accusing people of hacking/cheating is never a good idea either. You would be amazed how well someone can get at mage without a hack

I'd argue a little bit on the gear. As long as you start with a 100lrc and 70s resist suit, you have a chance to be competitive. From there, you can always improve a suit with 55 mana regen, 400% lmc, 99 dci, etc. But once you get into the super saturated mod suit, you are talking 10s of mil to get there if not 100s.:coco: I've used a 100lrc, 2/6, 40lmc with 70s suit for ages in PvP... while not perfect, I can stay alive often enough:p I've only recently taken to start improving mods on my suit since I've got some spare cash:loser:

Same could be argued with skills also. Aside from maybe 120 weapon skill, most other skills are good enough at 115. Aside from parry, weapon skill, and spirit speak(because it is a cheap scroll), I can't think of a single PvP char of mine that has more than 115 in a given skill:coco:

The two big things to "learn" in PvP are targetting and timing. You can practice both at yew gate by being a blue healer... although offensive spells have different timing, you can still get a basic feel by using healing spells.

Gellor, you mind explaining 55 mr, 400 lmc to me? Not sure what you're getting at. My impression was that max is 12 mr, 40 lmc.

I was being a smart a$$... some people in game feel that unless your suit is 100lrc, 40lmc, 25mr, 80dci, 18mr, and 70resist, you are gonna die when someone looks at you.

40lmc is the max.

There is no real limit on mana regen(mr).

45 dci is the max... but that is after all the mods take place... such as getting hit by a lower defense. So people shoot for 60 dci.

Firstly thank you all for the advice.

After getting killed in Despise multiple times (Damn you guys are quick! By the time I get you targeted I'm dead!), the one thing I have learned is that it's going to take me a LONG time before I can even hold my own in PVP, let alone compete with the best. Then again, all of you have been doing this for years.

I have been checking out Yew Gate the last few nights. Hmmm ... dunno what to make of it? Seems like every time I go there is nobody around ... and the one time I did see anybody else (a red whose name I can't recall), he ran off when I came near him. Then, last night I turned up there to see a about three or four others there also. "Wow! Finally some action," I thought. Amongst those there were a couple of reds (SUPR and another with no guild title), plus two or three blues (one COVE and the others showing no guild titles). Well, we all stood there for a few minutes, there was some running around, coming and going etc. but no fighting. I stood there for over 10 mins waiting to be attacked or challenged but nothing. Maybe they smelled "noob" and thought I wasn't even worth killing.

Meanwhile, I will continue to work on my skills, slowly improve my equipment, and try to find a few other noobs looking to get into PVP that I can spar and fight with so we can all improve our skills.

Even tho I get killed pretty quickly, Despise is still a lot of fun. I have learned quite a bit just walking around as a ghost and watching the action.

Again, thanks for the advice, and I look forward to facing some of you sometime soon (and getting killed no doubt :D).

yeah, most of the time, nobody is going to attack you at the gate. Theres a guard zone there, and they can get whacked, so if you want to fight a red, just attack him. its sure to trigger a response, though, it sounds like yr nowhere close to that level yet. what template are you using?

Welcome to PvP:danceb:

Now that you've gotten to see a little bit, now you can get a little more insight:thumbsup:

In general, you will find three types of "PvP":
- Yew gate... basically a mexican standoff. Unless a blue group rolls in deep, you've got everyone waiting for someone to make a move. Then when something happens, everything happens at the speed of light when 18 spells drop, 14 stealth archers pop out, and three greater dragons come in:coco:
- Dueling... this is the one on one stuff. These are long drawn out fights... usually. Takes a little luck and skill here.
- Champ/field fighting... this is mostly in champ areas with the champ as the prize. This is one large group attacking another group. They are usually two sided affairs and not like Yew gate where you got lots of little groups.

The strategy and templates for each type of "PvP" are often very different. That isn't to say you can run a template in all types of PvP and be good. Just that you can specialize a template and adjust your strategy for each type to become much better. For example, champ/field fighting often use a LOT of fields and area of effect spells while yew gate that is a dangerous strategy.

Getting into PvP by yourself is usually a difficult proposition. As you found, champs cause a quick loss of life.
