Ultima Online Stratics Weekly Announcement:

This week we extend our thanks to Nexus of Chesapeake, who has very kindly updated :

 • Ultima Online on Linux Thank you Nexus.
 • There's still time to enter our essay competition and win Jhall's 'cool goodies' (30 day time code or UO Legacy code). Closing date 27th April.
 • In response to several requests we have attempted to merge the 'skills' and 'professions' headings in our index menus to better bring skill information together. Feedback on whether this change is beneficial would be appreciated.
 • And finally, a promise kept, spawn maps for Ter Mur have been added to the atlas database.

Last Friday I (Petra Fyde) made a promise on Catskills board that I would attempt to create a spawn map for Ter Mur (This thread). Here's what fulfilling that promise involved.

 1. I took my Siege stealth character over the landscape, making notes and detecting hidden for the kepetch ambushers and trapdoor spiders. Never before have I made such extensive use of that skill!
 2. I had to devise some kind of reference for the areas. So with a little help from friends, I named them. Here is the map with the names I chose. I hope you approve of my choices.
 3. I used the Ter Mur zoomable map that Xena Dragon made for us to create regional maps of the areas I'd named.
 4. I made entries in the Grand Sosarian Atlas for each region, entering the details for the co-ordinates, which link back to the zoomable map, and the creatures that spawn there, with links to Hunter's guide, and of course the maps:
 5. Finally I updated all the relevant Hunter's Guide entries for the creatures I'd found.
The Atlas database has a wealth of information, if you've never explored it, I urge you to go beyond the links I've posted here, to the many other links in the index menus either side of the main Atlas page.

To contribute information please email to: [email protected], [email protected], or you can just send a pm to Petra Fyde.
Thank you.

Because it's been finished for two days and I couldn't wait any longer to see what you think :D

Petra, the Ter Mur maps and spawn listings are absolutely awesome! Good work on the names, too!

Glad you like them Tina!

Aran: Yes, and we've had a 'how to' on the site for years too - but it was very, very badly out of date. Now, with many thanks to Nexus, we are no longer out of date.

Didn't like the area names I came up with for UOC? :|

I do love Lost Settlement though.. better than Deserted.

I keep trying to tell people Linux based OS' aren't what they used to be years ago. They are really starting to get to a point where they can do just about everything Mac and Windows boxes can do, if not more. I still Dual Boot, but that's mainly because I have a few .NET 3.0 apps that simply will not play nice with Linux no matter what right now. Other than that My UO is Penguin Powered.....

I was looking at the guide and 3 things struck me. First it was Fedora Core 1 that was used in the example, that's 7 years old and we both know how fast Distro's update. Secondly back then you couldn't think of using UOAssist with Linux, so that info was absent. Third well the Enhanced Client runs on Linux too and it's install method is a bit "Odd" so I felt that info really needed to be shared somewhere UO players would look, outside WINE HQ's App Database.

If I'd have thought about it at the time I would have mentioned Mangler for people looking for a Native Ventrilo client alternative, the standard Vent client is kinda "quirky" on Linux. Then again that's not really UO related so....

@Petra

It was a pleasure to work on updating that, it did really need it and I had a feeling that it was being left to the side because well 93% of the Desktop/Laptop market belongs to Windows, leaving you guys will a really slim chance to be Linux familiar.

Great work on the map Petra ;)

And Nexus, that's a cool Linux guide too. Not everyone knows about the WineHQ site, so a Stratics one will be handy. Especially the UOA section, I didn't really bother persisting with UOA when I shifted OS a few years ago, but it'll be handy to get it back again :)

Yea I didn't know about it until someone suggested "Winetricks" to me a while back, and pointed me in that direction. You know I really think that's why Linux based OS' have the reputation they do, there is a real wealth of applications and information for it, but unlike Windows with it's dominate market share you have to really do some looking around to make the most out of your OS. I personally think it makes you a more knowledgeable PC user if you have to get involved with OS beyond point and click. I mean tell me where to find a guide to build your own Windows Based OS, or Mac based OS from the kernel up like Linux fans have with the Linux From Scratch guides....

UOC? I haven't seen those. I didn't know someone had already named it. Nor did I know the map had changed!
I can't install the enhanced client. I got a nice new motherboard and dual core athlon that could run it better than my old pc and all I get when I try to install is 'can not unpack'. I've been trying for months, repeatedly uninstall, re-download, start over. Same result.

For fun I installed wine (wine-bin package) on my ubuntu 8.05 server once. Without hassle I was able to run uo (2d) fine, not bad with anything windows. Be warned though, many malware/some viruses are 'wine compatible' so better install clamav too.

Yea, this is why I like my VMWare images. I keep a clean backup and if one goes south I just delete it , backup the clean one and use the clean one.

Any chance I could get feedback on the menu listing change? We had lots of complaints about skills info being in different places, but it took a lot of thought and fiddling to come up with a way to merge the 'skills' list and the 'professions' list in a way I hoped would work.

I've kept backups in case I need to revert the change.

Had to look for it today and didn't have any trouble once I realised you'd move it over to the left. I think the new setup is fine Petra.

That italics is rough on the eyes.

I dunno, its not really a nice clean list anymore. Eek!

If it were me, "my opinion" id have the list of skills, separated into categories like yours (Magic, Bard, etc)

When you click on the thing you get a description of the skill, a link to the professions page, etc etc.

You could also list things such as (almost like advanced char tokens)

The Mage
-Magery
-Evaluating Intelligence
-etc
-etc
-etc

The Warrior

In this case, you click on the categorie heading for the profession? i dunno =/

hehe, and that's why it was a nightmare to merge them. For ages I got complaints about those two lists being seperate, but merging them isn't as straightforward as dividing by categories. For example I moved 'poisoning' 4 times. The italics (as in the group heading) is the 'professions' essay. The plain text is the basic 'skills' page.
