As I was visiting Britain during one of my business errands for the Magnate, I noticed a sheet of paper tacked to the gray stone wall of Castle British. Taking a moment to read it, I soon learned that young Lady Danica was putting out a call to arms to the people of Britannia. I remembered that it was her order that had been nearly extinguished during the battle just a few nights past. The notice was very rousing and I decided that I would make time to pay a visit to Jhelom that evening to learn more about this order of knights and perhaps also lend my assistance.
There was a nice crowd when I arrived, and it was very heartening to see that Valor still exists in the hearts of many of my fellow Britannians. We did not have to wait long, for Lady Danica Amandine arrived right on time with her fellow knight, Chusa Subel. She greeted us, thanking us for coming and confessing that she wasn't sure anyone would heed her call.
The Knights of the Crux Ansata had suffered a terrible blow during the battle some nights prior. Lady Danica had hinted at treachery from within, and now she told us that one of their own lay dying. Lord Simeon Bennu, her teacher and leader of the order, had been badly injured and it seemed as though he might not make it. If the order was to survive it would need new knights to carry on. That was where those of us gathered came in.
She had been pleasantly surprised to find so many willing to lend aid to their cause. We were asked to step outside and form ranks. As we stood before her, she took a roll call and gave a brief history of their order. They had started as warriors of Jhelom lending their arms for gold, and grown into a group of knights fighting for the good of Britannia. She told us that through dedication to the cause, we would not only advance in the ranks of knighthood, but also flourish.
As conscripts, our first task was to seek out a woman named Greta Hambone, whose grief had been caused by a creature that might offer a measure of hope in saving the life of poor Simeon Bennu, the legendary White Hind. Lady Danica cautioned us not to kill the beast, for it would damn us and possibly Lord Bennu, as well. We would need its blood to save him.
We found Greta in New Haven, at the inn where she had been staying. Her tale was one of woe. Her husband Gustav had gone seeking the beast, claiming it was their meal ticket, and had slain it. Now, she told us, he spent his time drunk, and that we might find him in a charity house in Minoc. Even as the quest seemed hopeless, after all the beast was dead and buried, we set out to Minoc, anyway.
We never found Gustav Hambone. We found what we assumed to be his remains. The journal we found in his cabin suggested that something was after him, and that it had finally come for him. The account revealed Gustav's own misgivings with his evil deed. He had buried the White Hind at Compassion shrine, but not before a terrible beast of greed and betrayal had been born of her. A Golden Hart, that he said always returned to the grave of its mother. We made haste to Compassion shrine, hope restored in our hearts.
We did not find the Golden Hart at the shrine, but we found a memorial stone. The memorial stone repeated the word “wrong” over and over. Feeling that it might be a clue where we could find the Golden Hart, many gates were opened to Wrong dungeon.
At the dungeon, we found another memorial stone. There was barely any time to read it, as we were soon under attack! Apparently, the Golden Hart had its own guardians, who made good their defense of him. Wave after wave of fire swept over us, but eventually the protectors of this foul beast were defeated and we were faced with the Golden Hart, itself.
It told us that the beast's heart would cure Lord Simeon's illness. Lord d'Artagnan found it and we returned to Jhelom, where Lady Danica was waiting. Lord d'Artagnan displayed true Compassion and Sacrifice, giving the heart to cure Lord Bennu instead of keeping it or selling it for himself.
Lady Danica was proud of us all, calling us all heroes. She named six from the crowd of us that had stood out in particular in the quest to help Simeon. Duane, Link, Queen Ayra, Falcon, Ghost were named, and I was surprised when my name was honored along with them. She mentioned she would make special note of our contribution in her logs. She then congratulated everyone for our great teamwork and took the heart to help Lord Simeon.
As we filed through gates to Britain, we could only pray that we had saved Lord Bennu in time.
