Newbie Miner getting owned...

Hi, i've created a miner that is quietly raising his skills around New Haven. Howerver, i've ran in a problem: ettins. Everytime i see one, my packhorse gets attacked by an ettin and i lose all my cargo! Now i've transferred to Minoc, which seems more monster-free...

Do you guys train a combat skill to kill off monsters on your crafters? Or do you train only crafting skills?

Magery can be handy for handling small stuff. It's good to have on a crafter anyway for some stuff you might make.

We usually have our crafter skills in one and our resource gathering skills in another character. Though other mining and blacksmithing goes together so thats when it crosses over.
Now enough with that part of it. Most of our resource gatheres have minimal fighting skills usualy magery high enough to kill the over land cretures with blade spirits and to recall. If we create a mining character with fighting skills that means we gonna use him in either fel or we gonna use him for elemental hunting.
If you are in atlantic shard I can get you a beetle for your activities if not then am sure anybody can help in your shard at least you can protect the beetle and your ore by hoping on and recalling or walking slowly away.
Seemingly you getting killed by ettin you need a safer spot to mine untill your skills get higher. Good spot is minoc caves,Umbra and other spots you can fine around.
If you plan to make a pure crafter make sure you have magery on him or bring some blade spirit scrolls to help out with minor problems.
Last thing make sure you bond your beetle or pack horses. Get couple of packhorses and place some in stables till it bonds. in the mean time use trow away horses.
Eventualy you gonna need magery to recall or gate around as well as mark your favorite spots. You should have the highest str possible. Dex is only needed if you gonna make him a fighter the rest in int and stay elf for the better increase and extra 20 mana.

Yes, i'm on the atlantic shard... anyway, thanks for the advices!
i've got other questions: could you make an example of what an harvesting character template could look like? and how to bond other than placing the pet in the stables?

Thanks

But...what is "bond"?
You feed the pack animal or beetle or any animal once wait for 7 days feed it again and it will be bonded to you. When you recall it will recall with you loaded or not, when it dies it becomes a ghost and you can get it ressurected by the vet or another player thats a tamer. Are you on right now i'll send a tamer to give you a beetle?

I use a blue beetle that are fully trained. 3-4 Ettins attack him and the Ettins die quick!

My miner/smith was made long ago before Trammel and used to do dungeon runs with my guild. He has macing skills. However some places you might want to go if you have no defensive skills is Papua, Britain, and Cove as they have large guarded areas you can mine in. I have a beetle that can kill an Etin and also have a horse that can kill kill them. I think a packy can be trained to kill them also. You can do some healing with greater healing wands if you have no skills. Lots of options in this game.

Sorry Kaiser, when i read your post i was going to bed. It was very late here in italy (although i play on Atlantic because of the population... i love crowded servers :) ).

Trying to get the right skills on your characters is fundamental in this game, as you don't have many slots/account... that's why i always ask advices!

My crafter's named Eltharion. I want him to be a miner/blacksmith. Today i've bought the magery, meditation and evaluating intelligence. I'm still wondering if it was a waste of skill points and coins :)

You'll want Smith to 120, Armslore to 100, Mining to 100

so you should be fine with all the magic you want in the spare points. If you want to make him Smith/Tailor then just add Tailoring to 100 as well.

Im online now. Im going to drop by minoc to see if you there. Evaluating you wont need too much. Magery yes buying was good and med would go up so quick you would kick your self from buying. Matter of fact while you mining you want the rest of your skills to stay as low as possible so that ggs gains come quickly for mining. Depending how much you play you can get mining to gm in no time at all.

Depends on if you want to be able to mine in unguarded areas. Once you have bonded with your packies they will follow you if you recall. You can recall close to 100% with a runebook charged with recall scrolls. Prior my smith miner had magery to gate the packies around.

Also you might want to consider getting some skills that would be useful killing elementals you can dig up with gargoyles pickaxes

Im surprised no one told him about Delucia to mine...

Its greath for ore/wood and leather......

And you dont need eval to high , i found 50 was good enough to kill almost anything.
Using Blade spirits or energy vortex....

Just remember you can not cast them in town......

Good luck and have fun...

Ok, i'll give Delucia a visit...

but what about elemental hunting? Do they drop some strange stuff that i'm not aware of? :)

and isn't magery enough to deal with them?

sorry for the many questions, but i only used to play uo on unofficial shards many years ago and this is a whole new world to me!

25 ore per elemental of the given color, regular gems and chance at crystaline blackrock which you can mine in termur.
If your a fast elemental killer just pop up the high end ore needed ones and take them down. You can get alot of high end ore like that cutting some time.

I ran to the moongate and mined the edge inside of Umbra then chopped the trees to gm afterwards. No spawns, guard protection, and easy access to a smith shop for smelting. Everything you need to level a crafter in 1 spot.

Once you have bonded pets to recall with you there are several caves (not dungeons,ok) which are safe to mine. Apart of that, you can go a long way relying on evasive strategies:

Even if you do meet the occasional monster you can always yell at your packies to follow you and get out of harms way. I wouldn't spend time training your packies as suggested elsewhere. They just don't have high enough resists to be reliable in a fight. (Mind you, I'm not saying it can't be done. I'm saying it requires a lot of time to achieve). Beetles are fine. Get a beetle to 90ish skill and he will deal with most things you can find in a mine, except for ore elementals.

If you get a GM made suit (spined leather, for instance) very few of the regular monsters will be able to hurt you much before you can run away and recall out. The only ones that might cause you a bit of a headache are gargoyles and reapers - especially if you got a couple of them together; then they can easily ruin your recall attempts. But these are not very common in most mines (one nort of Minoc being the exception - always have 1-2 reapers).

I always found the area near the mtn pass south of brit to be the best SAFE place to Gm my miners,,,it is within walking distance of the stables, has a public forge, has lots of colored ore spots available, and is in a town Guard Zone!1 so all you have to do is holler for guards if attacked,, and another SAFE spot to mine if you want to try for the new rock crystals for imbueing is the bowl that surrounds the shrine of singularity,, I mine every ore spot around the bowl taking my fire beetle to smelt with and tinking my own shovels,,,, time I get clear around it , the spawn has recycled and just rinse/repeat long as you like,,, only trouble with both of these spots is tht they don't give the high ore count u get in mines,, I made 2 loops around singularity this morning and here is a typical sample of my 2 loop take,,548 iron ingots, 45 dull, 51 copper, 8 bronze, 4 gold, 8 agapite, 19 verite, 39 regular gems, 1 perfect emerald, 1 fire ruby, 1 torquoise, 1 blue diamond, and 1 crystal black rock and spent bout 20-25 minutes,,,,,
