New tree AND 10 new plants!?! YAY!!

I'm so excited I hardly know what to say!! THANK YOU DEVS!!!

(From 8/1 FoF) "Can the new seeds (announced at the Town Hall) be cross-pollinated?"

No - none of the new seeds can be cross-pollinated, including the Cocoa tree. The non-cocoa seeds will drop as "a peculiar seed" by certain (TBD) monsters. They won't give seeds of their own and won't give resources. The upside? There are ten possible plants the seeds can grow into!

The Cocoa tree will come from "a fragrant seed", also dropped by monsters, and will give the "cocoa pulp" resource, which Chefs can render into Cocoa Liquor or Cocoa Butter. They will also give more fragrant seeds.

Now if we could only get the Gardener's forum back... ;)

i'm super psyched to have something new to grow!!! i spent most of my first 2 years in UO tending to a roof top garden, cross-pollinating, doing a happy dance when i got a rare white or black seed...

but then it grew old... this is great news YAY!!! :danceb:

Hope we get some lily pads, pine trees (like the pet fresheners), bramble, orfleuers, and foxgloves! My poor Hunter-Gatherer will probably have many new grey robes too from his seed searches.

I guess this got buried, do we have an idea when we will get the new seeds?

My excitement over this has waned. What is the point if they don't produce seeds? If the devs didn't want to take the time to cross pollinate, fine. But, how are we to stock our shops with plants that don't self l? I have no intention of hunting blindly for seeds as we do for bonsai and the rare plants.

OR have I misunderstood and it's only the cocoa trees that don't reproduce? As it stands now, any of us can fill an order for 8 campions. If a customer wants 8 of the new Plant A it will take an undetermined amount of time to fill that order.

If the seeds are as plentifully placed on easy monsters as the bonsai seeds have been, getting more than enough of them should be easy. I wound up throwing bonsai seeds away, I had so many.

But I agree with you, being able to cross pollinate the new plants would've pumped life back into the old plant system, something it desperately needs. I always wished there was a Gardening skill, so my hours, weeks and years spent on growing plants would have at least amounted to something. LOL

I loved cross-pollinating until I had all the different types and colors of seeds... well, almost all of them. My kids found Legends, talked me into moving my main account there, and I fell in love with the shard, so I actually stopped playing LS before I had gotten the last 2 or 3 seeds for the complete set... but I must admit growing all those plants was some of the most relaxing fun I've had on UO. Now all I grow is Orange Petals, and it gets rather boring. :(

Be well - Pax

About all I grow also is the orange leafs. If I get low on red leafs I will grow a few of them, as for thorns I have not grown a thorn producing plants in a very long time.

I'm happy to hear there's new things for our gardens.
I'm disappointed that it can't be cross-polinated.
I'm disappointed that it drops on some specific mobs, but I hope they'll be at my reach. If it's like bonzai seeds, it should be ok. :)

And stackable seeds, and books of seeds, when when when?! ^^

Hi Pax,

I'm happy they're finally adding new plants to grow. I dislike how it's being implemented. Of course I will plant a couple of runs to decorate my shop. But, since it seems to be a typical farm fest like just about everything else in game ( I mean sugar on monsters? come on) it's just not something I personally want to do. Then again, I may change my mind if it is easy like the cocoa items and the bonsai seeds.

To echo Coppelia "stackable seeds, and books of seeds, when when when?!" :)

cocoa trees and cocoa butter. All lovely. But chocolatiering would be so much more interesting if you could make something you could at least see after all that effort.

We can make 'a tray of cookies' So why can't we make 'a box of chocolates'? I was really interested in the idea of making chocolates, I collected the ingredients and made just one. The rest of the ingredients are shoved in a bag in a chest. Total disappointment.

Heh, I wound up tossing bonsai seeds because the bonsai plants are ugly. I hope these new plants are cute, and useful!

A box of chocolates would be too cool. Say a dozen kinds of chocolates in a box and depending on the "mix" you could get different box graphics. So chefs would have to make tons of boxes trying to discover the amounts needed to get the special white heart box "Lady's Favorites" or the light blue mix "Gentleman's Fancy" or whatever they would call them. And if every chocolate has a makers mark by the same chef then the box says who made it in the title. :D

That's a mega cop-out if they can't be cross pollinated. That's not helping planters.

OK.. not to be a pessimist.. but I'm gonna be a pessimist....

ONE MILLION GOLD to the first person who successful identifies the actual date of the new seeds in game... and

ONE MILLION GOLD to the first person who successfully identifies the exploit the seeds introduce.... :p

Not to mention, could we make it so that chocolate can be decorated? It would be great to be able to make personalized chocolates for holidays.

Well, we know that one of them will be a potted cactus. Which leads me to think that the new plants may all be potted...? Great deco, if they are. :) My one fear, though, is that some of them may be the same as the potted plants from way back when; right now, my potted foxgloves are special to me because there are so few of them around. I really hope we won't be able to grow the exact same potted plant.

Now, if they give me the opportunity to grow a non-potted foxglove, or orfleur.... ohhhhhh, I will be happy happy happy. :D :D :D

I was thinking along the same lines. Just that I want to be able to make themed candies. You know chocolate bunnies and eggs for easter. maybe a chocolate bar for Halloween. chocolate snowflakes for Christmas. I would love to give friends chocolate themed treats that are personalized for the holidays.

I was also hoping the new plant types were able to cross-pollinated because I enjoy new surprises in the game. I wanted to see what kinds of leafs and thorns they could come up with and what special abilities they would have. Oh well maybe next time they add new plants.

BTW anybody else think a Venus flytrap type plant would be interesting in game, or have a been warped from seeing "The Little Shop of Horrors"? I can see it now a plant in the corner of my house yelling "Feed Me!"

Not to be the downer to this, but, uh, honestly... What this really means is, "Hey, we've decided to drop in a few new things, much like we did with Samurai Empire, and they're not going to go by the normal planting rules, and we're basically not going to add anything else on the scale of that because, frankly, we know we can keep you interested with these little things."

I mean, okay, new stuff = good. New stuff without lasting effect = bad.

And, great. Cocoa. Where's the sugar coming from? Right. Paragons. Great. :/

I'm trying not to be pessimistic about this, Radian, but you are are 100% on the mark. While I do appreciate them adding the new seeds I personally find it less than creative and VERY lazy. Not to upset my fellow gardeners and chefs, but I would be willing to wait a bit longer (I mean it's literally been years) if they would only reconsider allowing these plants to produce seeds.

The bonsai plants look really cool in the KR client. I wish we could get new 2d art for them in the legacy client.

Considering the fact that you will not be able to cross-pollinate these seeds, its not all that earth shattering to me. In a few months they will be just like the bonzai trees. Forgotten and unused.:(

One thing I wish they'd do is take the time to go through the plants that are part of the plant crafting system (even if they had to make a distinguishment between types when you click "decoration") and do for them what already exists for things such as chairs, and that would be to set them up with particular parts that hue, while the rest of the plant does not hue.

Yeah, that means that the "poppies" would have to be made with a default of "white," but that's not such a bad thing when you consider that then you could program the "default" white to be a red poppy. Of course, this then brings about the question of "white" plants as well... But honestly, most of the plants would look MUCH cooler if they weren't a full rehue.

And yeah, I understand that existing plants probably could not be ported over (though based only their seemingly limited DB applications), and they couldn't just modify the existing plants themselves without screwing up the world map. But really, it would be cool, and since something as simple as a chair has hueable areas, we KNOW they CAN do it. Why they DON'T do it is beyond me.

I COULD be wrong, but I thought a few years ago rehueing was in the "we want to do it" list. In fact, aren't the plants supposed to be rehued properly in KR? Which, of course, leaves out the majority of the players. I even remember a lot of decorators and gardeners saying how happy they would be with that despite begging for new plants to grow. At least the plants would look normal.
