new patch failing to apply

Since SA, I've had to deal with multiple instances of not being able to apply patches. This has lead me to reinstall multiple times. I don't enjoy my limited play time being consumed by reinstalling, new patches and broken UO.

How do I fix this or is it a problem on their end?

I have no 3rd party programs connected to UO, I've not edited the client in any way and I can't figure out what's wrong. I run xp.

if you have 2 or more machines, and one of them patches successfully, you can copy the installed game from one to the other, to replace the copy that didn't patch (but be sure to empty the patch folder first).

Wow, hmm . . . *ponders a few moments*
How do you do that Basara? I have 3 machines and none of them work the same.
- plus - how could I copy the game from one machine to another, when it take an hour or so just to reload Mondain's Legacy. - I'm not talking SA, but I know that is where they WANT me to go.

Incidentally, I did download SA and played it for a while at first, but don't like the graphics...old 2d style is what I like, and I'm told that you can have it that way now, but quite frankly, I'm tired of them messing around.

Hah, - even went to a "town meeting," a few years back when everything was supposed to be finalized by the end of that year. It's come and gone and is more of a mess than any solution except for game content. They could have saved a bundle and just given us another patch for that.

I have SA on one of my machines that works like absolute crap. Do they really want me to BUY it? - & tell me how to do this patch from one machine to another again.

-very synical and sceptical nowdays since the Stratics crash... rsvp

Typically that happens when you have a virus in active memory on your machine. Remove the client, run an up-to-date AVS; scandisk, defrag, then reinstall.

He's how it works in XP - not sure if it will work on Vista. I needed to change a program that is much older than UO, on a friend's Vista computer, and it won't let even administrators alter files in Program files (was needing to change the CD config for Masters of Orion II to look for a folder on the HDD instead of the CD - a one line text file, and it refused to let me change the file).

XP instructions:
1. Have both machines turned on. On each machine, go into program files, and find the EA Games Directory. In that folder, there should be a folder for Ultima Online 2D Client (or whatever your install source was).
2. Either copy the folder on the fully patched machine to the Shared Files folder on the other machine via your network, or copy it onto a USB flash drive.
3. Go to the other machine (moving the flash drive to it, if using that method). Make a backup copy of the old install, or rename it, within the folder.
4. In a new My computer instance separate from the other one, find the folder you copied from the other machine. Copy it into the EA Games folder.
5. If the new folders is the same name as the old one, you'll be prompted to replace files (which is why I suggest making a copy of the old folder as a backup). If they are different, then you'll need to rename the new folder with the old folder's name before the copy process (after backing up the old one, of course). This will keep the shortcut pats the same.
6. Make sure that the Patch folder is empty, and delete the patchlog.
7. Restart UO to make sure the copy process succeeded.

I've done this between 4 different machines over 7 years to solve patch issues, with no problems. OF course, I've only done it with 98SE, ME and XP machines, so I can't guarantee it can be done easily with Vista or W7 machines.

This technique works fine for me using Vista and Windows 7 also.

I've rarely had patching problems, but one the occasion I did I found I could get away with simply checking the dates on the files and only copying the ones with the same date as the patch from my pc to my hubby's.

Folks if you have problems patching, there is a log file which will tell you exactly what went wrong. Guess what it's called? PATCHLOG It is a text file, but doesn't have a file extension on it. If you right click it and 'open with' and choose notepad you can read it and see what is going on. If you can't figure out what it's telling you, then you can paste the most recent section (it's one long file but split up by date of activity) here in a message and get some answers from those that do understand it.

If you have trouble patching every time there is a patch then you have more serious issues, but the patchlog might still help someone help you.

Definitely a case where the patchlog will give you the answer. Look in your UO folder for the "patchlog" file and open it in notepad. Either post the contents here or send me a PM if you prefer.

SA = Stygian Abyss, the expansion. You pay for that one. EC = Enhanced Client, which is free. And yes, if your machine works like absolute crap I would definitely fix it before installing anything on it.
