[Magery] Negative Mage Weapon

I got a black staff with -26 Mage Skill and Use Best Weapon Skill. Can I use this staff to train up magery by smacking stuff? Or does it take a different weapon, like a wand? Also, I have about 52 Magery, what can I expect if I can get gains smacking stuff? Hitting worth 26 Weapon Skill?

Yes, you can train using that staff.
Fight things that you would fight with a weaponskill at the same level of your modified magery.
