Nasty, horrible, glowing, green, abomination discovered in my stable

They looked like real, feathered creatures. They have color phases, and are not just like re-colored mobs (like cu sidhes are). The plumage on the back and the wing tips is always red and they have red things that hang down from their faces. The tips of the tails are red. The color phase shows in the other feathers. The usual color phase is grey.

The texture of the feathers looks a little glossy and has a touch of dark grey ticking, no matter the color phase.

I doan wanna naked glowing green rideable rubber chicken, I want my hiryu back :(

Man, that is UGLY!! Glad I stick to the CC :)
yeah kinda... :(

Enhanced Client in most things looks better, imo. They just redid the ground tiles and such, and you can see the difference.

Cu Sidhes for example... I think they are nasty in the classic client, if you compare them to the ones in the enhanced client.

But Hiryus, man .. they just weren't done right in EC.. whoever made em either didn't finish em or didn't understand.

Anyone around here will tell you I am no fan of the EC. Even so, I seriously doubt that poor hiryu was deliberately left in that state.

Given the multiple relocations & lay-offs, my best guess would be the artist working on the hiryu may no longer be with the team or he/she may well have been pulled away from it to work on something else.

I have a screaming pink hiryu I'm fond of on one of my tamers, so if nothing else, you have spared me the trauma of being subjected to the screaming neon pink version of that abomination.

The dragon too.
I have a hangup about the dragons, too.

I can live with the model I guess, it doesn't quite look right but it's not miserable either.

The texture is what I don't like on those. The smooth-red and coarse-brown phases aren't there. There should be a red, smooth-skinned type, and a gravely-textured, brownish one. What we have now is... a pinkish smooth-skinned one. :/

...

Most of the creature models in the EC are very nice, and with constant tweaks to the hueing system, the client has gotten a LOT better and crisper in how it displays said creature (it's nice to see the Gaman look normal instead of the transparent/white they were in KR/early EC), but obviously a "redo" needs to happen with the Hiryu, and I doubt you'll see anyone even staunch EC players defend it.

I like the EC hyryu shape, the CC one looks like an airplane.

To be honest I'm not a fan of the hiryu on EC but neither on CC, certains creatures are just ugly in both clients :D

The EC version looks like a plucked chicken, the CC version looks like my plastic birds that I have on my lawn after a strong wind... :p

Maybe the hiryu should use the giant turkey animation, at least you can understan what they are

Here are some charts I made a while back in both clients. The actual screen shots were made in July 2009.

So like.

When I first started using the EC client, this was after a long break...

I would occasionally see people riding these big new creatures around. I didn't think they looked particularly nice, but also, I didn't know what they were.

I took to asking people - - what was it? People didn't get it at first. Then I think someone said theirs was a Lesser Hiryu. And I was like... how?

And I went to my stable and pulled Mr. Yuck out. And saw it. I was like... Oh no.

This had been a thing of beauty, all of these were... there's not many things in the 2d client which you ever looked at and felt appreciation for, for that reason. The Hiryu textures and model had been like that, for me.

(So I put Mr. Yuck back and said to myself, I hope to god that's placeholder art.)

I feel the same way about a few creatures in World of Warcraft. One is linked below. The video doesn't show off the appearance perfectly but it gives you an idea, and it also shows some of its new, wonderful animations.

Have you ever been to this region in World of Warcraft? I've always called it to myself the Wall of Naga, and I can see where someone else named it this as well. This video doesn't show its awesomeness very well. But if you've been there, you'll recognize it and maybe remember it.

Hiryus were UO's equivalent to Cenarion War Hippogryphs - something which looked so neat and natural and nice that you wanted to have one. Discovering one of the rare colored ones in the wild was a bit like visiting the Wall of Naga. You wouldn't necessarily do anything to it, but you would stop to look, because it looked neat.

sigh.

I think the EC dragon is alright, could be a bit better. The hiryu is just plain ugly... I do have a fondness for the EC Cu though :)

That is one ugly Hyru. I use the EC and am sooo glad I don't use the Hyru in my stable for anything! I would be to embarrassed!

Some might call me a EC fanboy, but even I swallowed when I first saw the hiryu. They look just horrible.

Most things looks great in the EC but hiryus definitely were made by a drunk dev. It's way up top of the list of creatures that should be changed.

Titans and cyclops I think as well lack any real skinning. If I recall EC Titans are just large and brown with no real textures. EC needs tons of work. Loads of potential.

I just found this picture I took a while back and wanted to show it to yall. This is a good shot of my Cenarion Hippogryph in WoW.

To me, this creature in WoW is what the Hiryu feels like in UO. Even the red parts are there, although not in precisely the same way. Except well, the Hiryu in UO does not... fly. But you get to see its wings anyway!

There's actually some irony in the hiryu not flying in uo (and the classic client ones actually do look like they should be able to)....as a hiryu translated is literally "flying dragon"

I don't really mean to bump a thread that has run it's course, but...

woh, look at the turkeys! (EC client).

Now I KNOW Hiryus can be done well. The turkeys are right where they should be and the Hiryus wouldn't be dissimilar to what went into those.

The size on them is about right, too. Oh wait they are making hiryu sounds as well...
