(If you dont like long posts about the past simply skip to the asterisk's )

First let me give you a little background before I recount the evening. I started UO back at release in 97. I was in highschool then and working at gamestop, and bought the game because I thought pay to play was ********. I thought the game would be crap, and I wanted to prove to all the customers that I thought were misguided morons, that this new mmo Idea was bs and a waste of time.

I got home, installed the game, patched it, and then on my little 33.6 connection logged in for the first time. about 12 hours later when my body finally stopped asking me to sleep and simply slammed my head on the keyboard I realized that I had just found something both wonderfull and evil =)

Needless to say the next time I went to work I was like a crack dealer with an unlimited supply of smack, and I was doing my damned best to get EVERYONE addicted.

I started off as what most people would call a Carebear. I chopped trees, I made bows, and I sold them to the merchant. I ran in fear from rabbits after one reenacted the scene from Monty Python... cept this one was grey and made scary sounds like a gerbil all cracked up.

Eventually I managed to make enough money to purchase a house, and placed it right outside my home at trinsic... next to the 1000 other houses (as this was before there were ANY rules, about house placement). With my house set up I was extremely happy, I was the man, I had a house and had accomplished my goal.

Shortly thereafter a guy carrying a rather large axe named "Akarisucks" came to my door, cut me in half, laughed at me, and took my house. It was at this moment that I realized that UO wasnt about happy times and green pastures but it was about sneeky 12yr old kids with sharp pointy weapons wanting to kill me and take my precious loot.

I learned my lesson here. Dont carry anything your not willing to lose, and watch out for other people. About a week later I had another house, a little further from town and was set to go. Managed to keep this house for a full day before losing it to someone who I had met in game and thought was a friend. Bob, apparently valued the house more than our friendship, and soon I was again homeless. I began to realize that someone would actually pretend to be your buddy just to get you to trust them, another valuable lesson learned.

I stayed away from houses for a few weeks as I learned the game, and raised my toon to a respectable skill level. I had managed to find a few dungeons and was making rather decent money. I had bumped into pks, been slaughtered several times, but also managed to run with the horde hunting them and gotten my licks in with the angry mob. Sure 10 on 2 wasnt fair... but those %@#&$!@#! had taken my home...TWICE!

At this point I had a large amount of funds, and a decent spot located outside of Brit through the mountains that was gorgeous. A friend and I purchased the large blacksmith deed (the pinnacle of wealth) and headed out to place it. We were almost robbed by two thieves but managed to get the deed to the location and place the house. Life was good for a few months. We managed to keep the house safe and secure, and were stock piling a small horde there (this was back when banks had a limit). One day while leaving the house, a thief sniped my key... I panic stricken attempted to kill the little bugger as if he got away with the key would make my house useless. The thief then promptly pulled out a kryss and beat me to death.

At that point the little carebear inside me died. I hated ALL of you. The pk that killed me, the thieves that stole from me, the nice miners for making more money than me, and that house owner for having that witch was stolen from me. There were two kinds of people in the UO world, the F'ee and the F'er and I was tired of being on the receiving end.

My brother, a friend, and I spent the next month going on a murderous rampage, killing everyone, looting anything we could get our hands on, and even clearing out/stealing houses.

Ended up playing that way off and on for the next year or so, then stat loss hit... and finally the last straw trammel/feluca split in 2000 for EQ and then DAOC.

Since then I have played pretty much everything... but nothing has given me the joy/rush of UO. Last Night I figured Id start playing again... and if I was lucky get a small part of that back.

*********************************************
So last night I posted on these forums looking for a few bits of information before I logged in and got started. I figured having 3 7x gm's back in the day and millions of gold would make me able to fit right in... I mean surely they couldnt change to much right?

A extremely nice guy named Quentico offered to answer some questions and get me going.

He came and picked me up in the town I had never heard of and escorted me to his house... witch looked like nothing I had seen before. He spent about two hours breaking down all the expansions, changes, upgrades, soulstones, skills, stat changes, etc etc.

By the end of that two hours I was worried... this was not the game I had played before. It was similar... but I was no longer sure I knew how to get started again.

Quentico then gave me a tour of the area, showed me his stable with his cute and scary pets, and then took me to Skara Brae where we met a vampire who cracked me up, who strangly had a newbie with him too. The poor newbie had made the mistake of stopping several of the vampires arrows in his chest and had been cleaned out. The vampire had chosen this time to take the little victim under his wing and teach him a thing or two. I wasnt sure if the vamp had "turned" the newbie or not... but I made sure not to let the vamp get to close to me.

The vamps name has been changed to protect the guilty... but we will call him, wrongy. Wrongy explained that there was a place called Blackrock that at the moment let people skill up real fast. He let us know that if we were seen together he might have to execute us, but if we hid fast enough we might be spared. **we both began quickly raising our hide abilities**

Quentico bought us both a horse and the four of us headed off through some gate to what I recognized as T2A.

We rode for quite some time through valleys and messa's untill we came to a series of mountain passes. These rather scary looking giant rock men (reminded me of black rock golems from shame back in the day) apparently didnt move and just screamed at you while you threw pointy objects at them. Not sure about you but thats the kind of relationship I like =)

Everyonce in a while you would have to run like hell when one of the mobs finally decided that it could actually fight back and cut you in half... but they would teleport back once you moved away.

We skilled there for an hour or two till some evil group known only as QFT (I believe) started roaming the area. The other newbie and I stealthed while Quentico and Wrongy fought, but it was a blast sitting there hidden knowing that the wrong bump from the shaddows and your a grease spot on the ground.

We eventually had to move once the traffic picked up, but it was a blast getting a taste of the old times and getting shown around by a few people nice enough to take time out of their schedule to assist two newbs.

Sorry this was rather long winded... but I had a lot on my mind, hopefully some of you will appreciate it =)

Thats OTF, and Vmp will normally kill and clean you out. For the most part if people see you with one of the other guilds they will kill you(or is that just me?) but most of the shard likes to kill and loot Vmp and OTF (if you can kill them)

Congrats on coming back and have fun

PS I think Righty was drunk so he was a bit nicer late night than normal

Yeah I'm a nice vampire also, anytime you wanna meet, I'll give you lots of gold and nice jewls. But we can only meet in a town with no guards, cause i don't want anyone seeing me play nice or anything, so when ya get the time, bring 5k and a decent weapon (make sure it's unblessed), and I'll show you a little trick or two. But remember, you CANNOT enter the area with anything blessed! Holla back...

Give me a few weeks and Ill take you up on that, also, when you come, make sure you come alone, wouldnt want any of your friends to see you being nice. Also, I'm not sure what a non blessed weapon/equipment looks like being a newbie, so please make sure to bring some yourself so you can teach by example =)

Well that was my exciting New Years Eve. Being on-call for a hospital and helping Pyro through 7 years of Ultima Online updates. I could almost see his character's head explode through the screen.

The poor game left him in the middle of Zento. The comment "Im in some town where everything looks Chinese!" was a great clue.

Fortunately it was a quiet night for Pyro at the blackrock spawn and he did manage to get himself on his way. Poor Wrongy - despite his best efforts (hide guild tag, incognito), he still was recognized by opportunistic VMP hunters.

BTW Pyro - I was wondering if you still had my Alchemist Bauble I "let" you borrow and hopefully still "blessed".

Luck be with you as you continue onwards. You know how to get a hold of me if ye need me.

entertaining post.

Yes, normally VMP will kill you and clean you out. OTF and VMP seem to basically behave the same. They basically patrol en masse all places where people would go and gank them. I get killed by both guilds fairly regularly as I try to develop my character on siege as well.

I generally don't have loot because I don't really have much in the way of items, so I don't get too excited when I get ganked. The worst I lose is time, which isn't something to get too excited about. Most of my encounters with VMP or OTF are a gank squad vs my newbie char, so I basically try to run away. Usually I die. Sometimes I don't. It makes no difference; I really don't stand to lose much of anything anyway.

My advice to any newcomer to siege. Don't ever carry anything that will really hurt you to lose. If you're training at BR, expect to die because you will. Expect to lose anything you take there, so train skills in ways that risk the loss of as little as possible.

When I was training ninja I just carried a siege blessed dagger. Every time I get killed, I lose nothing. When training archery I just take a siege blessed bow and about 10-20 arrows. No risk of substantial loss. If I'm training inscription, I just carry a pen and a couple of resources. Generally I can make back the cash value of whatever I just lost in 5 min or less with my newb char, so it's not a big deal to die.

I hardly hit at the blackrock spawn, and if I do start to go down just run deep into the BR spawn. You can get two or three OTF/Vmp that way if they try and loot you

Wow! You have been gone for a while!

Still, nice story. Careful at blackrock, you will be killed there repeatedly.
Hiding and stealth are definitely recommended, but many of the others there have detect hidden and tracking, so it's no guarantee.

That's the best advice, and I still follow it after years of Siege.

I first try not to die. When that fails, and I die to a gank of people I know will loot bone-dry, I just hightail it back home to equip without bothering to try to grab my junk back. I'd rather not waste my time trying to grab a few potions I can easily pour in a minute.

Of course, I have been around a while and have some resources, but a little farming each week should be enough to maintain a good supply.

Where can I find Vampire bats? I barely remember T2A so if its beyond classic, just point me in the right direction and I can figure my way there.

I have just about out grown a certain graveyard witch will remain nameless. Other than the damn litch that keeps periodically lighting me on fire.

I dont plan on going to BR, while I know its the fastest way to skill, unless I have money to back those skills up its not going to do me much good, Im playing the game nice and slow and enjoying the journey.

IS there a place where I can get a list of decent hunting spots? I tried covetous last night, but those harpies are rather nasty when your nuking them down with fireball. Its like trying to kill a rat with a flyswatter hehe

[/ QUOTE ]When I was working archery at the low levels I wandered around west of Umbra. It was largely deserted at the time unless someone chased me out of town (*waves to energy vortex who murdered my newbie not 20 seconds after character creation, must be a new record*).

Of course, now that I've suggested it publicly they will probably start patroling it looking for newbies working low-level fighting skills. *sigh*

In the event that the unfortunate but unavoidable does happen, trundle yer spirit back over the bridge, through Umbra, and the healer's ("bloodletters") is the last building before the East bridge. After returning to life, continue over the East bridge, take a sharp NW turn, go all the way through the houses till you reach the large stone building up against the mountains (a very brief run) and you can re-supply at the MYTH shop at very reasonable prices (somewhat longwinded and quite shameless plug for my guild).

Good luck, and welcome to Siege.

Once I find out how to get from where I am to that town, Ill be golden =)

I see maybe one or two people a day where Im at. Cracked me up, last night I was chain fireballing some undead and a guy walks up to me and is like hey, can you gate me... Im like... Doesnt he see me fireballing mobs... Made me laugh, least I know some people think Im scarier than I am =)
Good luck, and welcome to Siege.
